WIGWAM UPDATE Wigwam Country Club • October 2013 • www.wigwamcc.org BY RICHARD GOLENDA, WCC PRESIDENT Your Wigwam Country Club held its first Board Meeting for this year and we welcomed our two new Board Members Bud Bennett and Carmine Nesta to our family. Our membership is growing and in less than a month many golf and tennis activities are scheduled including WWGA Games, a 9 Wine & Dine on Oc- tober 11th and the Harvest Harmony Couples Mixer on October 13th. One of the great golf tournaments of the year, The Tradition, is on October 19th. Our first Social is our “Welcome Back Party” which will be held on November 2nd. Let’s make this a great year and please remember to welcome new mem- bers and encourage them to come and participate in our tennis, golf and social activities. During the summer many great things occurred at the Wigwam. For example, Andy Aduddell an active duty Luke AFB pilot and Wigwam Country Member qualified and represented Arizona and the Wigwam in the USA Amateur Golf Tournament in Massachusetts. Great job Andy - We are all very proud of you! Another example is the result of the tremendous efforts by Carlos Hassey to recruit, train and en- courage new WCC Tennis Members. Our Wigwam Country Club USTA 6.0 Mixed Double Team re- cently won the Southwest Sectional Championship and will be competing in the National Tournament in November. We are very proud of your accom- plishments and we send you our best wishes for your continued success. To the best of our knowl- edge this may be the only time that we have had representation from our Club in both tennis and golf in the same year at the national level. This is a call for all “Snow Birds” to return home because we miss you and don’t want you miss any of the great fun and activities that are planned for the 2013-14 year. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE BY ERIC WOHLER, TOURNAMENT CHAIRMAN As we begin the 2013-2014 Wigwam Golf season I would like to introduce the new golf committee. Tom Mascot, Bill Gaines, Carmine Nesta, Rick Oliveria and Bob Taylor have agreed to help organize and run the various Wigwam members’ tournaments . I look forward to working with them this next year. The courses have changed for some tournaments this year with the new over seeding schedule. The Patriot will again be the first course to be over seeded. The Heritage and Gold course will be switched with the Gold being last. Make sure to pick up your tournament books in the pro shop for the complete tournament schedule. Let’s get to the upcoming tournament talk. Kicking off the year on October 13th will be the Harvest Harmony Couples Mixer with dinner following. The Tradition follows on October 19th , and the Presidents Cup returns on November 23rd with Dave Morgan as defending Champion. Just a quick mention that we will also be having sand parties again this year to keep the courses looking good, dates will be announced later. Looking forward to great year, MEMBERS TOURNAMENTS GOLF HAPPENINGS BY LEO SIMONETTA, DIRECTOR OF GOLF With the cooler October weather comes the perfect season for overseeding. Happy 71st golf season to the WWGA. Where did the time go, and how do we manage to look so young?

Ann Polumbus and Diana Carter are taking over this job, but Ann Stoneback and I felt we should tidy up the loose ends from last season since the final article for the Update didn’t get published due to the WCC elections. So here goes-----

First off, a big thank you to Judy Kennell and her board for a job very well done! No major upsets. Judy worked hard and we appreciate her dedication and her cheerful demeanor.

Angie Moore and Shel Taylor hosted a Newcomer’s Brunch at Angie’s lovely home on April 21st. The attendance was quite good and we welcomed six new members to the WWGA.

Michelle Schuck and Diane Sullivan were Pairing Chairmen for the WWGA Championship. Congratulations go to our new champion, Robin Cook, and to Jan Boggs, who won in the Senior Flight. Way to go ladies------and to all those members who played.

Team news----as you might recall from previous articles, the team voted to disband the Roadrunner Team leaving us with only the Valley Team. All WWGA members with a 25 or less handicap are encouraged to play with the team on Tuesdays although for actual team competition you will have to play to a 20 handicap. The Wigwam team won low net in the Valley League this year. Congratulations to Elsie Wilner for averaging the most points per match and to Viggy Stankovic for being the most improved player. Terry Barker won the annual team shootout on April 30th. Angie Moore will be team Captain this year and Molly VanMarter will be the Senior Captain. Dixie Dewitt and Betty Scott will be the Assistant Captains.

Our closing game and luncheon was held on May 2nd and was a great event. Thanks go to Jan Boggs, Ro McVety and Barb Everts for planning such a lovely luncheon.

than previous years. We have not tried to accomplish two courses on back to back weeks before and we have not closed the Gold course third in the rotation before. By going with this schedule, we will have the ability to have all 54 holes open eleven days sooner in November than we have had in prior years, and at a time when the weather is great and the demand is higher. We will also continue with our overseeding plan that we used last year by overseeding more areas on the golf course as well as going with poa trivialis seed on our greens which proved to be a much better winter surface for us.

Several accomplishments were acknowledged----

Most improved Player ................. Viggy Stankovic (8 Strokes)Most Birdies ..........................................Molly VanMarter (13)Lowest number of putts on a single round ... Robin Cook (24)Most Posting of under 29 putts .............................Elsie WilnerMedallion winners ...............................Robin Cook low grossDiane Haller .................................................................low net

All in all, a pretty impressive group!!!

By the time you read this we should be back in the groove with our Wigwam Golf. Well, some of you!!! We have added several new members to our group so if you see someone you don’t recognize, be sure to introduce yourself. Remember---all of us were the “new kid” at one time.

Good luck to our new President, Tessie Van Wagner, and her board. It is a lovely group of ladies and I’m sure they will do their job very well. Think some interesting changes are coming up and some new, fun golf games as well.

Special thanks, again, to Justin and Elvira. What would we do without them-----they keep us on an even keel and we appreciate all their help. So, thank you.

So ladies remember-----golf is just a game. Some days it can be difficult and other days it can be easy, but we must love it since we keep playing!!! So hit that ball as long and straight as you can, sink those putts and enjoy being outdoors in the fresh air (oops, forgot it’s Phoenix and not Seattle!!!) with your friends.

I hope you had a great summer. Lots of things are happening in the tennis department.

The Wigwam summer junior was very well attended with over 50 kids participating throughout the summer. Our new summer Twilight series was also very successful with 60+ player members every Friday for 5 weeks competing for their team. Men’s night continues to grow with 24 member participating every

Tuesday at 7PM. Junior kick-off party attracted 80 kids and parents to come out for a fun afternoon of tennis and

tennis

pizza. Women’s interclub and ladies league kick-off party had 26 ladies with lunch served at Reds Bar and Grill. Our membership continues to grow and we are so excited seeing our members use our club. We are happy to announce the Wigwam has expanded the USTA league play to 7 teams for every level and player. We lost part of the fence along court 1 as well as one of the big light poles due to the storm. Assessments have been made and repairs will begin soon. As you can see we had a very busy summer season and we anticipate a very busy fall season. We urge you to call to reserve a court if you are planning to come out and play. The ball machine is available to all members during nonprime times.

WIGWAM GOING TO NATIONALS!CONGRATULATION TO:

To end in a high note we are proud to announce that our USTA 6.0 Mixed Doubles team, listed above, won the 2013 Southwest Sectional Championship. They earned a spot at the National which will be played November 22-24th in Tucson, Arizona. We wish our team good luck and great job in your big win!

By Bud Bennett The Board Members, Social

Committee Members and I are excited about the prospects of having a great social schedule this year! Our plans are nearly finalized for the Welcome Back Party on November 2, which will be held outdoors on the Wigwam property. Games, cold drinks, great food, a live

band and dancing will be the order of the evening! A large turnout is anticipated and we particularly invite our new members to participate and experience the genuine friendliness and fun of the Wigwam. We will send out a flyer and post the details on the Wigwam website as soon as plans are complete.

We are also starting to work on the Holiday Party which occurs on December 13, and are planning a traditional approach to the holiday season! This party is your chance to show off your dress up fancy clothes and should get you into the mood of the season. More to follow as the

social
