ROBERTO Mar-tinez showedthere is noroom for senti-ment in foot-ball, ending

    Swansea Citys Carling Cup

dream as they were ready tomake history.

Brendan Rodgers was look-ing to guide Swansea into thequarter-finalsofthe LeagueCupfor the first time in the clubslong history, but, after threeexcellent performances in pre-

vious rounds, they were cutdown by their former boss Mar-tinez.

Once loved by the Swanseafaithful, the Spaniards suddendeparture 16 months ago stillfeltveryrawat theDWStadiumlast night, but it was Martinezwho walked away from the en-counter with a smile on hisface.

Swansea had more than heldtheir own against the PremierLeague side Martinez haddumped them for, dominatinglarge spells of the first half, buteventuallythe qualityofWigansmulti-million pound side shonethrough against their Champi-onship opponents.

Martinez admitted in thebuild-up he expected to be

jeered by some Swansea sup-porters still hurting about hisdeparture from the Liberty andas the game kicked off the ma-

jorityofthe 4,500travellingfanswere venting their anger at theSpaniard.

Martinez made five changesfrom the team which drew 1-1with Bolton Wanderers at theweekend, but it remained astrong Wigan side which in-cluded former Swansea loan

form had been hurt by the lossofkey playerslikeScottSinclairto injury after the Carling Cupthird-round tie with Peterbor-ough and, with that in mind,Brendan Rodgers made eightchanges from the side who beatLeicester City on Saturday.

Alan Tate, Angel Rangel andDarren Pratley were the onlythree to keep their places with

first starts of the season forKemy Agustien and Craig Beat-tie.

Ex-Celtic forward Beattie al-most gave the Swans a dreamopening on nine minutes, buthad his goal ruled out for off-side.

Beattie was furious with theofficial, but, without the benefitof a television replay, it lookedtoo close to call.

Wigans back four went miss-ingas Pratleyslida ballthroughto Cedric van der Gun, but theDutchmandidntlookconfidentto finish the move himself and

passed to Beattie. He put the ball in under pres-

Both Rodgers and Martinezare building their reputations asmanagers who want open andexpansive football from their

players and it was making for afrantic opening half hour to thetie.

    Pratley,linkedwith apossible

reunion with Martinez at Wiganinthe summer, burstclear on20minutes, but his driven crosswas cut out before it reachedBeattie.

Wigans Gomez, who scored15 goals in his last full season atthe Swans, wasted a couple offree-kicks in the first half andwas restricted to shooting fromlong range.

The home sides best chancecame on 30 minutes when BenWatson got free at the edge oftheSwanseasboxand playedinMauro Boselli, but the forwardwantedtoomuchtimeto gethis

Swansea were looking dan-gerous on the break, but werebeing allowed far too muchspace to work by the Wiganback four.

Pratley and Agustien com-bined well after an interceptionby Angel Rangel, but MaynorFigueroa crowed the midfielderout and the chance was gone.

    Rodgers had lost Albert Ser-

ran to injury in the first half andwas then dealt another blowwhenAgustienwasforcedoffatthe break, with Andrea Orlandicoming on in his place.

Agustien had been giving theSwans plenty of bite in themiddle and with him off the

pitch it only took Wigan sevenminutes to take advantage ofthe change.

    Paraguay international Ant-olinAlcarazplayedtheballfrom

the back and it ran through toWigans record 6.5m signingMauro Boselli, who calmlyrounded Makalambay before

    producing a smart side-foot fin-ish.

    Goalkeeper Makalamaby got

nowhere near a Ben Watsoncorner from the right, but thestriker could only head overwith the goal gaping.

Wigan were at last starting tomove the ball about like aPremier League side andSwansea were under sustained

pressure for the first time in thegame.

First Figueroa stung the fin-gers of Makalambay from 30

yards when the ball dropped to

him from a free-kick thenBoselli had the Swans stopperscrambling, trying his luck from40 yards.
