Wi-Fi Technology

Wi-Fi TechnologyWi-Fi Technology

Wi-Fi TechnologyIt is an electronic device to exchange data or connect to the internet wirelessly using radio waves. It is based on to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE)108.11 standards Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that allows computers, some mobile phones, I pads, game consoles, and other devices to communicate over a wireless signal.Wi-Fi can be less secure than wired connections because an intruder does not need a physical connection.

History of Wi-Fi

VIC HAYES called the father of Wi-Fi.

In 1985 ruling by the US Federal communications Commission that released the ISM band for unlicensed use.

In 1991, NCR Corporation with AT&T Corporation invented the precursor to 802.11 intended for use in cashier systems..

The Wi-Fi alliance was formed as a trade association to hold the Wi-Fi trade mark under which most products are sold.

A Key patent used in Wi-Fi was developed by the John OSullivan as a by-product in CSIRO research project.

Uses of Wi-Fi

Internet accessCity-wide Wi-FiCampus-wide Wi-FiDirect computer-to-computer communications

Internet AccessWi-Fi-enabled device can connect to the internet when within range of a wireless network. The coverage of one or more (interconnected) access points is called Hotspots, can extend to one area to another area. Wi-Fi provides service in private homes, high street chains and independent businesses. In public spaces at Wi-Fi hotspots set up either free-of-charge or commercially.

City-wide Wi-FiIt is outdoor Wi-Fi access point. Many cities around the world announced plans to construct city-wide network. Ex. In 2004 Mysore become India's first Wi-Fi enable city and second in the world after Jerusalem.A company called Wi-Fi Net has set up hotspots in Mysore, coverage the complete city and few near by villages.

Campus-Wide Wi-FiMany traditional college campuses in the united states provide at last partial wireless Wi-Fi Internet coverage.

Direct computer-to-computer communicationsWi-Fi also allows communications directly from one computer to another without an access point intermediary.

Advantages of Wi-FiWi-Fi also cheaper deployment of local area networkManufactures are building wireless network adapters into most laptops. The different competitive brands of access points and client network-interfaces can inter-operate at a basic level of service.Wi-Fi Protected Access encryption(WPA2) is considered a secure, provided a strong passphrase is used.

Limitations of Wi-FiSpectrum assignments and operational limitations or not consistent world wide.A Wi-Fi signals occupies 5 channels in the 2.4GHz band. Any two channels numbers that differ by five or more, such as 2 and 7,do not overlap.Equivalent isotropic ally radiated power(EIRP) in the EU is limited to 20dBm(100 mW).Limited connection:Just like a normal radio, WiFi uses a small number of radio channels to work.Security:You are broadcasting your network data over radio waves and these are easily picked up by other devices within range.
