SORRY, BUT THERE IS NO INDEXING IN THIS ISSUE OF THE MATCH PROGRAMME.
CLUB CAR PARKING
FACILITIES
Note please the club car park is
for use when USING the club
facilities.
The car park is not a cheap
option to avoid paying to park
in the city centre.
Car park gates may be locked
from time to time at night.
PRESIDENT - CARLISLE RFC
A warm welcome to Warwick Road for the match today. It give me very great pleasure
to welcome my opposite number from the visiting club, and his colleagues, and I trust
they will enjoy their stay with us. - apart from the obvious - the result.
An equally warm welcome to the match sponsor today. Your generosity is very much
appreciated and I know the club as a whole is grateful for your support. The foregoing
also applies to the match ball sponsor.
The referee is an important part of any fixture, and without him / her we would not be
able to enjoy our sport. Have a great game.
Running a rugby club becomes more expensive year on year and the support of every-
one is a vital ingredient if progress is to be made and maintained. Without massive
change to our structure, and large injections of cash, we must make every effort to
retain and improve what we have, with any long term ambitions never to far from our
thoughts.
The club will always be greater than any person, or any one team and it is incumbent
on all of us , and that includes players both young and old, to make a contribution to
the overall welfare of the organisation. After all it is a team game, and much more
satisfaction can be had from working as a team, both on and off the field!
It’s great to see that the premises are a great hive of activity most nights of the week,
and special praise is due to all those coaches and administrators at all levels, who give
up an enormous amount of free time for the benefit of our young folk, boys and girls
alike.
Thank you all for your esteemed support and enjoy the game. I look forward to meet-
ing you all in the bars after the match.

Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the contents of the
programme, it may not always be the official view of Carlisle RFC
As always the match referee is very welcome at Carlisle. Without the referee we would not
be able to enjoy the Game. The referee deserves respect at all times and there is no place
for any form of abuse to be directed at the referee, either on or off the field. Players regu-
larly make mistakes, and the match official is not perfect and he / she too will not always get
it right.
If the referee does make an error of judgement that should never the signal for abuse from
a player, coach, official or a spectator.
Remember that, in almost all cases the referee is a volunteer and provides a service to the
game so that we can all enjoy it. People wanting to referee are in short supply, and one of
the reasons given for the shortage of volunteers is, alleged abuse.
PLEASE RESPECT THE REFEREE AT ALL TIMES.
The playing enclosure is out of bounds at all times except to those authorised to be there by
the game regulations. Spectators are asked to remain behind the barriers (where they
exist), and where pitches do not have a permanent barrier, you are requested to stand well
back from the touch line. This will allow the touch judge to officiate without hindrance, and
also reduce the probability of injury to any player or spectator in the event of a collision!
Whilst people are free to encourage their team it is expected that supporters will use mod-
erate language so as not to intimidate or offend others. There have been instances, par-
ticularly at junior and youth games, where there has been encroachment on the field, or
dubious verbal encouragement from parents. This is not a good example to set. Lads and
lasses need the freedom to express themselves on the field of play without any undue in-
timidation from the sidelines.
Carlisle RFC will not hesitate to take appropriate action where necessary, Have a great
day,
RESPECT YOUR CLUB
RESPECT THE REFEREE WHISTLE BLOWING
GIVE IT A TRY
There is a serious shortage of folk
prepared to referee and whilst the
local Cumbria Society are doing
their best to cover fixtures, it is not
always possible.
Carlisle do their fair share and we
supply a number of referees right
through the spectrum. More are
needed. Interested, then contact
the local referee society - details
can be found on the Cumbria RFU
website.

We are all proud of our facilities here at Warwick Road. They are ex-
pensive to maintain and your help and assistance to keep the fields
and buildings in good order would be appreciated. Apart from being
dangerous to anyone playing rugby or training, foreign objects left lying
around the fields can cause untold damage to machinery.
All coaches, players, managers and spectators are asked to ensure
that objects and litter are not left littered around the ground. PLEASE
DON’T COMPROMISE SAFETY.
Obviously, the same applies to the clubhouse, changing rooms, the
grandstand and all ancillary equipment. Thanks for your assistance.

MUMBLINGS Down to the last four games of a long and hard season, with one more at
home and two on the road after this afternoon. We’ve rehearsed many sce-
narios over the course of the season. The success or otherwise (and we don’t
want to be talking about @otherwise’) is quite definitely in our own hands. A
lot of people, including many behind the scenes, have put in a lot of hard
work to get us to where we are, and it is great to see the lads out on the field
representing the club to the best of their ability.
We all have a different view as to how the game should be played, and how-
ever each game pans out, there are always those who “know better”! But,
we put our trust in coaches to deliver the goods, and being realistic and with
such a small pool of players to select from, we ought to be thankful (some
weeks) that it is possible to turn out a team. Injuries, illness, work demands
and all manner of other distractions get in the way. We can’t dictate to ama-
teur players in the same way we might if they were professionals, so we have
to be content as best we can.
Playing for the senior side, men or women, should be the aim of all rugby
players in the club. All set out in their playing careers with the an equal op-
portunity but generally only those with fitness, dedication and commitment
make it through to senior representative. There will be those who feel ag-
grieved, perhaps thinking they have had a raw deal along the way. Well, the
answer is in your own hands. Good luck to all this afternoon.

A polite note with a request to parents, coaches,
and indeed all spectators.
The kids appreciate support and encouragement
during games but there have been occasions
both at Carlisle and elsewhere, when over
enthusiasm has got in the way of common
sense, and may have compromised the lads on
the field.
Be careful what you say, who you say it to;
Don’t berate the referee or officials;
Stand well back from the touch line, behind the
barriers if there are any, and do not, under any
circumstances, enter the field of play.
Thanks in anticipation of you help.

We live in an age of social me-
dia and it’s all too easy to write
the wrong thing before pressing
the send button! All are re-
minded to take care. One sen-
ior player in the county has
been charged with bringing the
game into disrepute because of
what he wrote (on more than
one occasion) on a Facebook
page. The entries were grossly
offensive, and have been seen
by women and children. He is
lucky the police weren’t in-
volved. Nonetheless, he has
exposed himself to personal
sanction, and there is always
the possibility that his club
could be charged, and that
could result in league points
deduction. That would be in
extreme cases, but it behoves
us all to take care. Folk can do
what they want in their per-
sonal lives, but anything offen-
sive posted by a rugby club
member about anything to do
with rugby, could well attract
unwelcome attention! Check
before you send - we don’t
want either our club, or any
member of it, to find them-
selves in hot water with the
authorities.
Do all the battling on the field,
shake hands afterwards, have a
pint at the bar. Friendship is all.
CAPTAIN’S CRACK
SENIOR RUGBY CHATTER

The 1st XV would like to send our kind thoughts to Pete (Riddle) and his family at this tough time, Pete being Scottish, we know he won’t let this overcome him and we will soon see him down atthe club soon.. We are now entering the silly season, where the table doesn’t mean anything; teams are fighting for safety or promotion and we are currently fighting for every point. Last week saw us pick up a great result on the road at Broughton Park but being critical, we should of come away with the full five. There were a lot of positives in the game; with our set piece play showing dominance and our backs showing their creative flare with hopefully more of that to come today. Last time we met, it was a game of two halves in which we fought for our lead in the first half then threw it away so easily in the second half; it looked like we forgot how to defend and didn’t show that will and determination to grind out the win, but that has gone and we can’t dwell on that anymore. We welcome Widnes and their supporters to Warwick Road for another close contested game of rugby, in which today could see us relieve some pressure from the bottom of the table if we bring our A games and pull out a perform-ance for 80 minutes. Confidence has been building up round the club after some solid performances and results, but a big challenge is ahead of us today and I hope the lads have prepared mentally and physically to overcome it. ‘One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles possesses the only strength
which can overcome adversity’ - Tom Graham

GOSSIP COLUMN
Not sure what the logic is in the reasoning, but asked why he was jetting off to Spain for a few
days last week, PAUL HALLIDAY responded by saying “ ‘cos it’s the Cheltenham Festival’.
Work that one out!” What we want to know is how is Sticky Vicky? Or, should we
not be rubbing salt in the wound? Congratulations to DAN HOLMES on his engagement
to LOUISE that was celebrated with a bash in the club last Saturday. Does she know what
she’s doing? Apparently the stag do is being organised by young George Graham and is de-
scribed as a mystery destination, and if they get back in time the wedding is at the Round-
thorn in Penrith during August. And still on the engagement theme, a couple of week-
ends ago, DAMO ARMSTRONG took childhood sweetheart, CHARLEY MURRAY to Edinburgh
for a short break. He caught her completely unawares and made a semi — honest woman of
her by getting down on bended knee and proposing. An instant acceptance “Gossip” under-
stands. The only thing he got wrong - he forgot to ask her dad beforehand! STEPH MUS-
GRAVE was nursing a hang over last week - tried to wriggler out of a stint on the bar! T O M
GRAHAM (missing this afternoon) had a fitting for a suit for a wedding last Saturday. To en-
sure the trousers weren’t too tight, he felt the need to get a game in for the university in the
morning when they found themselves short of players! That well known spendthrift, MIKE
SIMPSON, is the proud dad of son of former player JOHN who passed out as only one of
twelve from the original forty two who started the Royal Marine Commando training course.
Well done to him as he starts his new career stationed at Faslane in Scotland. Last Saturday
PLUMS turned forty something but we haven’t pinned it down yet! Whatever, belated happy
birthday. The 23rd March brings another forties something birthday, but this one we have
been able confirm - nearly 50!! Congratulations to SHARON MILLER on Monday coming.
She pulls a good pint! Question - where’s RICH SOWERBY these days? On vacation for
three months across the pond. MATT SHIELDS having arrived at Harlequins has made
it through to the 1st XV. Well done. We’ll follow your progress. Welcome back to the
club to ANGUS FULTON. He has had a spell at the Falcons, but has been released and is now
back with us to bolster the front row stock. Pleasing to report that COLIN JACKSON is
seemingly on the mend which is great news. One wag suggested that one of his problems was
having to cope with Andrea on her 50th a couple of weeks ago. Congratulations Granny Jack-
son and keep up the good work with the wedding arrangements. Our grounds
man, GREG BACON, is off to Oz after the game this afternoon. Ushering at his mates wed-
ding in Perth is the prime reason, but he and his brother have treated Mum to a combined
belated birthday / Mothers Day treat - a trip to Sydney and Bali while they are out there.
This refereeing job must pay well! Due back tomorrow after a week in the Italian sun, BLAINO
& VICKI. Retiring at the end of this season, a former Carlisle tyrant, JAMES WHITE-
LOCK—WAINWRIGHT (Chester) now taking up amateur dramatics. After a few years prop-
ping for Sandal, another former city forward, JOHN WARWICK, has hung up his boots after a
knee injury. New hobby - gardening! Not sure why, but a cryptic note sent in
claims that TOM GRAHAM, DAMO ARMSTRONG & MATTY ROPER spent the night in the fish-
ing van of the latter to celebrate the win last week at Broughton Park! MARK BARTON has
apparently returned to training following a shoulder injury; it is claimed he was a dead ringer
in his dark glasses for Dennis Taylor! We’re all thinking about PETE RIDDLE who is
very ill. Note from the coaching team - they were delighted to see TOM GRAHAM signing
up for Weight Watchers going along with PAUL HALLIDAY who went along to give moral sup-
port and encouragement to stop being a *****!!

IRB - RFU - COUNTY
Too late to change the logo now, but nest season the IRB information
will appear under the new branding of World Rugby. Like everything
else in this world,, there has to be a plethora of folk to float all the pa-
per about, and World Rugby are no exception!
A chance to support the RFU Injured Players Foundation - Rebecca
Morgan from RFU Discipline writes in support of Gerard McEvilly (her
boss:
A huge thank you to those who have already sponsored Gerard for this year’s Virgin London Marathon.
It is now only just over a month to the race and Gerard is looking for a final push in sponsorship to help him hit his target and as he isn’t or-ganised enough to have a mailing list for you all he has asked me to send you this email (although I think he just wants to avoid all the hor-ror marathon stories he’d get in response!)
If you haven’t donated already but are able to do so, please would you be kind enough to follow the link below:-

2NDS & 3RDS NEWS
The Crusaders seem to be maintaining reasonable form at the moment,
and were unlucky a couple of weeks ago when they gave Workington a
tight match at the Ellis Sports Ground. This afternoon they are off to
Parklands to play Creighton and should be able to take the league points.
That said league progress is almost at a halt because of the points deduc-
tions carried over from last season, and more earlier this season. That
said, Geoff Grieves, who has done a sterling job, can be satisfied with
how thing are going.
The Hornets have been having a relatively good season in the Cumbria 2
League, one that they head at the moment, but their game against White-
haven, in second place, at Warwick Road this afternoon, will be a test of
their mettle. Home advantage should see them through!
Best wishes to Ian Salter from the Hornets who is recovering from sur-
gery, so we assume he will be missing this afternoon.
Rugby in Cumbria 1 and Cumbria 2 remains in a somewhat fragile state,
some clubs (including us on occasions) struggling to field XV’s.
Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the contents of the
programme, it may not always be the official view of Carlisle RFC
COUGARS CRACK
The Cougars still have an outside chance of being promoted. Their last cou-
ple of games were at Ormskirk and Preston Grasshoppers; the former had
a problem getting a team to play at home and the match was called off.
The latter was a good win for the Cougars on the road. The lasses still have
three games to fit in in their promotion push, away at Sheffield and with
Manchester and Darlington still to play.
County trials take place at Penrith over the weekend, and there’s more
than a chance we will have good representation in the final analysis. Cum-
bria entertain Cheshire at Carlisle on 16th May with a lunchtime kick off
prior to the male county game against Warwickshire at 3.00pm.
Kendal (a new ladies team) have made it through to a national final.

COLTS - YOUTH - JUNIOR
Our regular correspondent is away on a break in Italy. So apolo-
gies for the brevity of the notes.
Colts are a bit short of match practise in recent weeks - county
fixtures and training getting in the way! Tomorrow though, they
are back in action with a trip to Darlington. Want to go, then the
coach leaves the club at 0845.
Plenty of mini and midi action tomorrow:
Under 7s at home to Kendal.
Under 8s away to Kendal.
Under 9s away at Percy Park.
Under 10s also on the road to Rockcliff.
Under 11s travel with Under 8s to Kendal.
Under 12s are going with the Under 9s.
Under 14s entertain Penrith whilst the
Under 15s go to Winter’s Park.
The Under 16 fixture has been cancelled.
Easter Saturday brings several junior sides from Warrington into
town. They were playing at Penrith who have pulled the plug and
we have agreed to host their games to save the tour. The follow-
ing day Warrington take their entourage to Kirkby Lonsdale.

REFEREE CORNER
Carlisle RFC boasts a successful Club Referee Society that includes officials operating
in the National Leagues down to Level 10. The referees regularly give up their Sunday
mornings to officiate games for the U16s down to U13s fifteen a side fixtures. At pre-
sent there is a pool of around eight active referees in the club. The club society are
proudly sponsored by Benfield and have their own referee kit.
Ben Blain is responsible for appointing the referees to the weekly games at Warwick
Road and comments; " We are extremely proud and grateful for the work our volun-
teers put in on a Sunday morning. Martin Plummer did a great job getting Benfield on
board with the sponsorship as this helped to broaden our image within the club. To be
in a position to appoint neutral officials to fifteen a-side games at each age group is a
privilege and something a lot of clubs across the country would love to to be able to
emulate. Our coaches love knowing that they will have a qualified match official for
their home games and I regularly keep in contact with them to discuss how things are
going. It is important we continue to build and generate rapport as the youth players
work through the club."
Ben has recently held a couple of club evenings for the officials, club coaches and U15s
and 16s players on topics 'The Tackle' and 'Managing Foul Play'. He says; "It was
great to see the turnouts we got at each event. There was a good spread from each
role and some good input and discussion. We wanted to give our players and coaches
a bit more on what we are looking for at the tackle as this would help all involved in the
game."
After joining Cumbria Referee Society in 2010, Ben was promoted onto the RFU Na-
tional Panel of Referees in November 2014 and regularly operates in National 2 North
& South. Last week he took charge of Gloucester V Exeter Chiefs Under 18s in the
premiership academy finals at the Saracens Allianz Park, and will be on the line for
England v Scotland Under 18s on 8th March at Newcastle before heading down to the
BMW International Festival of Rugby at Wellington in April. If anybody is interested in
getting involved as match official at club or county level they can contact Ben on

We all enjoy our Game, but sadly there are too many who reap the rewards of enjoy-
ment when playing, but signally fail to put something back in return after retiring.
Rugby can’t exist without willing referees; so, think about and think seriously about
taking up the whistle, this ensuring that all the young folk coming through the club can
enjoy all the benefits we have all had over the years.
You will enjoy it - guaranteed!
