Introduction to Wider Learning
All staff at Twyford are dedicated to ensuring there is a diverse and wide-ranging Wider Learning offer for students across all year groups. We are
very fortunate to have a comprehensive range of Wider Learning Coordinators and Lead roles within the school to ensure that students
have a wealth of opportunities available to them.
At Twyford, we recognise the importance of
Wider Learning in Education. The Wider
Learning principle aligns with our school

Benefits of Wider Learning We are very proud of our Wider Learning offer at Twyford as we know how much this
enriches, improves and widens students’ educational experiences. In our recent SIAMS
inspection (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) in April 2017, the
impact our Wider Learning offer has on students was celebrated in the final report:
‘Participation in extracurricular activities is exceptionally high and makes for a very cohesive community.
Through their enthusiastic engagement with the varied activities and clubs on offer, students develop their own
gifts and build a network of relationships across the school. Some identify positive, life-long impacts they
believe school will have on their habits of mind and attitudes to other people. One has been so inspired by her
experience with the Christian fellowship group she is planning to become a youth worker.’ SIAMS Report 2017
A diverse and enriching Wider Learning offer allows us to build on the
following key principles:
• Ensuring a balance between academic focus and developing well rounded students who are engaged
in school life
• Igniting passion and enthusiasm through different experiences of subjects out of the classroom
• Allowing students to try new experiences (which they might not always experience out of school)
• Develop, improve and stretch students skills, knowledge, talents and gifts
• Giving students opportunities to learn about life beyond education and school
• Using Wider Learning opportunities to engage, support and offer intervention for particular groups of
students
• Developing our ethos and identity as a school community
• Giving something back to the local and wider world (nearly £16,000 raised for charities / partner
school last year)

Participation Points in Wider Learning
With all the fantastic Wider Learning that goes on at Twyford, we would like to keep an
electronic record of student involvement in Wider Learning to enable us to praise and
celebrate student achievement in this area.
When a student signs up to a club, the teacher will keep an electronic register of
weekly attendance. We will also record when a student is representing the school in a
Student Leadership role or a one-off Wider Learning activity.
Year 7 94%
Year 8 88%
Year 9 74%
Year 10 64%
Year 11 34%
Year 12 44%
Year 13 19%
To show us how many students attended
a club in each year group. This chart
shows the % of students who attended at
least one club in 2017-18 %.
The participation points will then be added onto a student’s conduct
record. The points system operates as follows:
‘Attendance to a club’ – 1 point per club attended - Music - Sport - Drama - Chaplaincy - Science and Maths - Arts, Humanities, English and MFL -
‘Representing the school’ in a Sports fixture, Music performance, Drama performance or for any other event (E.g: debate, spelling or maths competition) – 5 points (Music, Sport, Drama, Other) ‘Student Leadership’ student will receive 5 points per half term for having a leadership role. They can also receive additional points if they attend extra events.
The participation points are then used in the following ways:
Wider Learning Booklet 2017 – 2018 Twyford Church of England High School Page 12 of 14
To go towards the Extra-Curricular participation Conduct points per House –
shared in each End of Term assembly.
