NHS Constitution

The NHS belongs to the people.

It is there to improve our health and well-being, supporting us to keep mentally and physically well, to get better when we are ill and, when we cannot fully recover, to stay as well as we can to the end of our lives. It works at the limits of science – bringing the highest levels of human knowledge and skill to save lives and improve health. It touches our lives at times of basic human need, when care and compassion are what matter most.

Staff Pledges

Pledge 1: To provide all staff with clear roles and responsibilities and rewarding jobs for teams and individuals that make a difference to patients, their families and carers, and to communities.

Pledge 2: To provide all staff with personal development plans, access to appropriate training for their jobs and the support of line management to succeed.

Pledge 3: To provide support and opportunities for staff to maintain their health, wellbeing and safety.

Pledge 4: To engage staff in decisions that affect them and the services they provide individually, through representative organisations and through local partnership working arrangements. All staff will be empowered to put forward better ways to deliver better and safer services for patients and their families

Why we should encourage widening participation

• 40% of our workforce are unregistered, 70,000 in the NW

• They provide a high proportion of the care and compassion to patients and service users

• Our workforce should reflect the communities we serve

• Employment improves health in those communities

• We need to encourage equality and diversity within our workforce

• The NW has the greatest number of apprentices compared to other areas and this is a good route into NHS careers

• And its part of the Education Outcomes Framework by which we will be assessed
