Mike LaRosa • Head Coach Mike LaRosa is in his second season

as the baseball coach at Widener Uni-

versity.

LaRosa was an assistant coach at

Neumann University from 2010-11.

He primarily was responsible for coach-

ing the infielders, serving as the base

running and assistant hitting coach as well as being the first base

coach. LaRosa also was the Knights’ JV coach.

With LaRosa’s help, Neumann in 2011 posted a 28-13 record,

advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament

and competed in the ECAC South Region Tournament. The 2010

team went 20-18-1 and played in the CSAC Tournament before

advancing to the ECAC South Tournament final.

LaRosa was a four-year starter at second base for West Chester

University, serving as captain his junior and senior seasons. He was

tabbed All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference all four years and

was named the NCAA Division II National Defensive Player of the

Year in 2003.

He graduated with a career .362 batting average and ranked

second, now fifth, in school history with 234 hits. He helped the

Rams to two PSAC East regular season titles and three trips to the

NCAA Tournament.

After graduation, LaRosa played professionally for the New Haven

County Cutters in the Canadian-American Independent Baseball

League.

LaRosa graduated West Chester in 2005 with a B.S. in Business

Management and was a four-year member of the school’s Student-

Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He earned his Master’s in

May 2012 from Neumann in Sport Management.

Brian Campbell, a former standout player for the Pride, is in his second season as an assistant coach for his alma mater. Camp-bell was a key member of the squad as a pitcher and a shortstop from 2004-07, being named first team All-Commonwealth Conference in 2006 and 2007. As a senior in 2007, Campbell led the league with a 1.37 ERA and was third with 23 stolen bases. In 2006, he closed fourth in the league with a .401 batting average and was picked to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. His playing career did not end in Chester as he competed for three seasons with the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association. Campbell also competed for the Veracruz Winter League and was a 2007 New York State League All-Star. He also was a three-time member of the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll. Campbell graduated Widener in 2007 with a degree in Business Management.

Josh Krautwald is in his second season as an assistant coach for Widener. Krautwald played two seasons at Neumann University, going 4-1 on the mound in 2010 with 51 strikeouts over 50 1/3 innings. He was picked second team All-Colonial States Athletic Con-ference that season and made the league’s All-Academic Team. Krautwald received a Bachmann Academic Scholarship from Neumann for the 2010-11 academic year. He is an assistant facility manager for MapleZone Sports and Fitness Complex in Boothwyn, scheduling tournaments, camps and clinics as well as serving as head coach for the traveling team for 15 year olds. Krautwald graduated Neumann in 2011 with a B.S. in Sport Management.

Widener’s baseball team in 2006 moved to a beautiful new on-campus stadium on the site of the former softball field. The field is one of the finest college baseball facilities in the Phila-delphia area. It sports dugouts, bleachers, a scoreboard, a press box, three batting cages, four pitchers mounds off the field, a 30-foot blue monster in left field and the same grass used by the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. A true site to behold, it is one of three on-campus fields and four all together that underwent an extensive renovation dur-ing the 2005-06 academic year.

WIDENER PRIDE4

PREVIEW

Eager to get back to back among the elite teams in the Commonwealth Confer-

ence, Widener will have a much different look this season as it embarks on the 2013

campaign. Gone are 11 seniors of which six were named all-league at least once, but

the Pride are confident the 13 returnees along with 17 newcomers will help bring the

team back to the top of the heap.

One player who once again should make an impact in senior catcher Dennis Hock-

er, who last season was named first team all-league as a utility player. He hopes to see

more than the 10 starts he had at catcher last season with the graduation of all-confer-

ence player Sean Saverio.

Also a viable option at designated hitter, Hocker ended last season fourth in the

league with five home runs, sixth on the team with a .294 batting average, fourth with

26 RBI and tied for fifth with six doubles.

Senior Matt Hone is the lone returning starter among the infielders. He made 35

starts at shortstop a season ago, the most starts of any infielder, and also could see time at third base. The Newtown, PA native gave Widener

a lift with 26 hits last year and hopes to improve upon an .891 fielding percentage.

Junior Kyle Summers and sophomore Matt Scherer also look for playing time in the infield.

The outfield gets a boost with junior Michael Riverso back in the fold. He closed fourth on the squad last season with a .310 batting

average and the team went 15-12 during his 27 starts in left field. Riverso’s .473 on-base percentage and .976 field percentage puts him in

a spot where he will be heavily relied on this year.

Also back in the outfield is senior Brendan O’Brien, who made 30 starts in right field in 2012. Closing fifth on the team with a .299

batting average, he also ended with 22 RBI and went 7-for-9 in stolen bases.

Juniors Sam Christie and Colin Weiss as well as sophomore Josh Everett also will vie for spots in the outfield.

Widener was hit hard in the offseason, witnessing the departure of nine pitchers that included three starters. The lone starter returning

is sophomore Robert Barth (pictured), who gives the Pride plenty of reason for optimism. The Norristown product had 21 strikeouts versus

11 walks last season and should get more starts in 2013 than the seven he had in 2012.

Another pitcher who will be asked to step up is senior Brandon McCloskey, who looks to regain the form he had in 2011. That season,

he went 5-0 with a 2.50 ERA and landed a spot as the Conference’s Player of the Week. Last year, he saw most of his time coming out of

the bullpen but still pitched strong with a 3-3 record and a .295 opponents batting average.

Sophomore Marc Noyalis appeared in 12 games with 16 strikeouts over 18 innings and returns in top form. Senior Michael Bonagura

is back after red-shirting last season due to injury.

The Pride’s newcomers include Charles Kaenzig, Brendan Glass, Peter Pulhac, Alec O’Dell, Joseph Santone, Joseph LaGrossa, Shawn

Barton, Dominick Mancuso, Nicholas Moeltner, Pat Rodier, Alex Barclay, Kristopher

Bornholdt, Craig Lager, James Liscio, Glenn Stanners, Jake Tackett and Kevin Scisorek.

Widener for the second straight year opens the campaign outside of Florida as it

battles St. Mary’s (MD) in a three-game series February 23-24 in St. Mary’s, MD.

The Pride then head to Florida for six games in as many days that include re-matches

against Heidelberg, Ohio Northern and Kenyon. Widener upended then No. 12 Hei-

delberg last season, marking the third straight year and fourth season in the last five it

defeated a ranked opponent in Florida.

League play opens March 15 in Chester against Lebanon Valley and ends April 27 at

home versus Messiah.

The top four teams advance to the conference tournament, which is May 2-4 in West

Lawn, PA.
