How to Read the Script for the WIDA Screener Online Writing Test

This document contains the text that should be read aloud during the Writing Test administration and the stage directions to help guide the test administrator.

• The administrator should read aloud all text in bold font. The instructions that the student should hear are black and bold, while test items themselves are blue and bold.

• Do NOT read unbolded text aloud. Unbolded text provides the administrator with stage directions.

Below is a sample of the script with these points highlighted.

This page says, “Part C.”Hold up the next page of the script to show Part C. Scan the room and make sure all students are in the right place.

It says,“What is happening in the picture?”

In this part, write about what the class is doing. Number 5 is done for you. What does it say?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, say: It says, “The teacher is giving a pencil to a girl.”

Look back at the big picture. Find the teacher giving a pencil to a girl. PAUSE.

What else do you see happening in the picture?Allow time for students to respond.

Now write two sentences about what you see happening in the picture. Write one sentence next to number 6 and one sentence next to number 7. Spell the best you can.

Do you have any questions?Answer questions.

Tier A Writing Test Script Grade 1Before beginning the test administration, make sure each student has his or her pre-labeled Grade 1 Tier A Writing Test Booklet and a sharpened pencil. Desks/tables should be clear of everything but test materials.

Today you are going to take a writing test in English. Do the best you can.

Look at your test booklet. Does it have your name on it? Pause for response. Make sure each student has the test booklet with his or her name on it.

Do you have any questions?Answer questions.

Now open the first page of the test booklet.Hold up your script to show the title page. Make sure all students are now on that page.

This is the title page of the Writing Test. It says, “WIDA Screener Online, Writing Test, Grade One, Tier A.” Do you see this page?Make sure students are following along. If a student is not on the correct page, open the student’s booklet to the correct page.

Now turn the page.

This page says, “Art Class.”Hold up the next page of the script to show the picture. Scan the room and make sure all students are in the right place.

This picture shows students in a classroom. They are making art projects. PAUSE.

Let’s read the question under the picture. It says,“What do you see in the picture?”

Look at the big picture. Find the clock.Point to the clock on the next page of the script. Scan the room to make sure all students are in the right place.

This is a clock.

Now find number 1. It is done for you. Number 1 says “clock.” Point to the number 1 and the word “clock” on the next page of the script.

O.K., now point to something else in the picture. PAUSE.

Write that on the line next to number 2.Pause while students write. Monitor students for signs that they understand the task. Answer questions.

What other things do you see in this picture?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, point to the boy, girl, teacher, table, chair, door, shape, or paint, and ask: What is this? Wait for students to respond. Repeat until students are able to name something in the picture.

Write one of those things on the line next to number 3.Pause while students write. Monitor students for signs that they understand the task. Answer questions.

What other things do you see in this picture?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, point to the boy, girl, teacher, table, chair, door, shape, or paint, and say: What is this? Wait for students to respond. Repeat until students are able to name something in the picture.

For all tasks: Monitor the students. Check to make sure everyone is following directions. If any student is struggling, point to the boy, girl, teacher, table, chair, door, shape, or paint, and ask: What is this? Wait for student’s response, and then say: Now write that on the line.

Allow a reasonable amount of time for everyone to attempt to write something next to each number. Go to the next page when all students have finished writing. This section of the Writing Test should take approximately 5 minutes.

If some students are still writing, say: Please finish what you are writing now. PAUSE 15 SECONDS.

Now go to the top of the next page.

Look at the sentences at the top. They say, “What is happening in the picture? Write 2 sentences.”

Look at the big picture. Find the teacher holding a piece of paper. Put your finger on the teacher.Scan the room to make sure all students are in the right place.

The teacher is cutting paper with scissors.

What else do you see happening in the picture? Allow time for student response. If necessary, say: The girl is gluing shapes on her paper.

You will write two sentences about what you see happening in the picture. Write one sentence next to number 1 and another sentence next to number 2. Spell the best you can.

When you get to the stop sign, put your pencil down and look at me.

Do you have any questions?Answer questions.

Now begin writing about the picture.Monitor the students. Check to make sure everyone is following directions. Encourage any struggling students by pointing to one of the tables in the picture and saying: Look at these students. What are they doing? Wait for student’s response, and then point to the lines and say: Now write that on the lines.

When a student has put his/her pencil down, check that the student has attempted to write.

Allow a reasonable amount of time for everyone to attempt to write something. End the test when about 10 minutes have passed.

If some students are still writing, say: Please finish what you are writing now. PAUSE.

End the testing session by saying:

This is the end of the Writing Test. Please close your booklet.Collect test booklets before dismissing students from the test session.

What is happening in picture one?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, say: It is lunchtime at school, and Ethan is standing in line to get his lunch.

Look at picture two. PAUSE.

What is Ethan doing in picture two?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, say: Ethan is walking to his table when he sees something exciting out of the window. It is the new school playground.

Look at picture three. PAUSE.

What is happening in picture three?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, say: Ethan was looking out the window, so he did not see the trash can in his way. He bumps into it and drops his lunch.

Look at picture four. PAUSE.

What is happening in picture four?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, say: Ethan’s friends help him pick up the food and put it in the trash can.

Look at picture five. PAUSE.

What is happening in picture five?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, say: The cafeteria worker gives Ethan a new lunch. His friends wave to him to tell him to come sit with them.

There is no picture six. We don’t know how the story ends. You will make up your own ending to the story.

How do you think the story ends?Allow time for students to respond. If necessary, ask: What do you think Ethan will do next?

It says, “Now it’s your turn to write!”Scan the room and make sure all students are in the right place.

Look at the directions. They say,“Write Ethan’s story from the beginning to the end. You may use the words in the Word Box to help you.”

Now look at the Word Box. The words are there to help you write the story. I will read the words from top to bottom. Point to the words as I read them aloud. The words are:

“first, then, after, finally, window, playground, bump, trash, drop, tray.”

You will have about 30 minutes to write the whole story. You will start writing on the first line of this page. If you get to the bottom of this page and need more lines to write on, you may turn the page and write on the back. When you finish writing, put your pencil down and look at me.

Do you have any questions? Answer questions.

Remember: Start at the beginning, use each picture to write about what happens, and then make up your own ending to the story.

Now begin writing the story. Monitor the students. Check to make sure everyone is following directions. When the students have finished, remind them to check their work.

The test is over when about 30 minutes have passed. After 25 minutes, say: You have about 5 minutes left to write.

If any students are still working productively at the end of 30 minutes, allow them no more than 5 additional minutes to complete their work and then say: Please finish what you are writing now. PAUSE.

End the testing session by saying:

This is the end of the Writing Test. Please close your booklet.Collect test booklets before dismissing students from the test session.
