Wicomico Public Libraries’ (WPL) Board of Trustees is seeking a new Executi ve Director to lead the Library System, build on valued partnerships, and to conti nue to develop the library’s potenti al to educate, empower and enrich the lives of people in this community.

The Executi ve Director will have demonstrated talent in building and maintaining partnerships and connecti ons among all stakeholders in the County and region. Providing quality service to the area’s over one hundred thousand residents and the additi onal students and employees who spend part of their ti me within Wicomico County will be of utmost priority.

Governed by an eleven-member board, WPL serves the area through 3 locati ons, a bookmobile and an outreach van. The ideal Executi ve Director will bring passion, innovati on and an ability to culti vate and maintain a diverse set of organizati onal partners.

Wicomico County is a growing community located on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore, where you are only 35 minutes from Ocean City and 2 hours from D.C., Balti more and Philadelphia. Home to over 1,500 acres of parks and trails, visitors can hike, bike, play, relax and explore the area’s natural beauty. The Wicomico and Nanti coke rivers course through the County, emp-tying into the Chesapeake Bay, and dozens of other creeks, streams, inlets and marshes provide visitors with over 1,000 miles of waterways to explore and enjoy fi shing, crabbing, clamming, boati ng, paddling and exploring.

Recognized as a best community for Music Educati on, Wicomico County Public Schools provides quality educati on to over 14,500 students. With opportuniti es for not only advanced placement and honors programs, but dual enrollment in WorWic Community College, students can get started on college preparati ons that count for both high school and college credit. Salisbury University, a regionally accredited four-year insti tuti on off ers 58 graduate and undergraduate programs. Home to the Nati onal Champion SeaGulls men’s lacrosse team, the college provides a wealth of fi ne arts programs, sporti ng events, and community resources. In combinati on with an acti ve and growing fi ne arts community, Wicomico County provides multi ple opportuniti es to discover and explore both visual and performing arts. Wicomico is home to many nati onally and internati onally recognized businesses such as Perdue Farms and Cadista Pharmaceuti cals. The second largest port and the second largest airport in Maryland are both in Wicomico County.

Salisbury, the County Seat, is the fastest growing city in Maryland. Considered the economic capital of the Eastern Shore, the job market conti nues to grow.

Salisbury is also the home the MLB Orioles farm team, the Delmarva Shorebirds, and the Nati onal Folk Festi val for 2018-2020.

RESPONSIBILITIESThe Executi ve Director, reporti ng to the Board of Trustees, oversees an award-winning library system. This positi on provides overall strategic and operati onal leadership with full responsibility for, but not limited to, the following areas: personnel and fi scal management including budget creati on and oversight; marketi ng and communicati ons; fundraising and development; emergent technologies; faciliti es; and external partnership development through engagement with key stakeholder groups.

QUALIFICATIONSMinimum qualifi cati ons include a Masters’ Degree in Library/Informati on Science from an ALA-accredited program and fi ve years of management experience in a medium to large library organizati on. Maryland State Certi fi cati on as a Professional Public Library Director or the ability to acquire this certi fi cati on within 6 months is required. (see WPL’s website for links on this certi fi cati on) Additi onal skills include politi cal acumen, strong commu-nicati on skills, ability to think and plan strategically, the ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders and demonstrated ability in fi scal management. Experience in a public library with diverse service areas, multi ple loca-ti ons, reporti ng to a governing board, and building new faciliti es highly desired. Residency in Wicomico County is expected upon acceptance of positi on.

COMPENSATIONThe starti ng salary range is $72,000 - $86,000 (dependent upon experience and qualifi cati ons) with an att racti ve benefi ts package.
