A witch with purple lipstick and turned-up toes, jaunty jack-o-lanterns with attitudes, flocks of bats–all these fun images make up two whimsical quilts. The fused lettering announces the season for things that go bump in the night. Choose one or both of these projects that are as easy as pumpkin pie to make.

Making and Assembling the Quilt1. Referring to the Quilt Diagram, sew the 22" x

202" Fabric D borders to the sides of the Fabric A square. Press all seam allowances away from the center. Sew the Fabric D top and bottom borders to the square.

2. Sew the appropriate Fabric B borders to the sides of the quilt. Sew the appropriate Fabric E squares to ends of the top and bottom Fabric B border strips. (Note: squares are 42" for Pumpkin Quilt and 32" for Witch Quilt.) Sew the pieced borders to the top and bottom.

3. Trace the needed letters onto the paper side of paper-backed fusible web, noting that the letters are printed backwards for fusing. Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse traced patterns to the wrong side of the appropriate fabric. Cut out parts on the drawn lines. Refer to the quilt photograph for placement on the Fabric D bottom border. Fuse each letter in place following manufacturer’s instructions. Finish the edges with a decorative machine stitch using contrast-ing thread, or use an invisible thread with a blind appliqué machine stitch.

Finishing the Quilt4. Layer the quilt with batting and backing and

baste. Quilt in the ditch around borders. Quilt around the letters and the printed motifs. Bind to finish the quilt.
