On January 26th, 2009 Presi-
dent Ed Giesen called the 264th

It was moved by Jim
Broadhead, seconded by John
Masters to accept the minutes of
the November meeting as printed in
the newsletter. Motion passed.

ported on past financial entries.
Bonita Graham, Sunshine
Lady reported on the passing away
of Deanne Hancock‟s brother and
Vinita Hawthorne‟s nephew,
Larry and Verlyn Cushenbery‟s
mother and Jerry Burling. Mary
Brashear has broken both legs and
Carl Houchin was recently in the
hospital with a heart illness. Fran-
ces Krahl sent a newspaper clip-
ping about Model A’s vehicles for
Zane‟s funeral procession.
New member, Jerry Sharp
was present.
Correspondence was pre-
sented to the members by Ed
Giesen.
No report available on
Wichita Area Car Club Council,

For old business, a report on
the New Year’s Tour was given,
Ladies Christmas Luncheon and
Club Christmas Party and Charity
Auction. Members were reminded
to sign up for refreshments at Club
meetings.
For new business, members
were asked to make plans to attend
Post Swap Meet Party on February
21st . February meeting program
will be tour planning.
At break time refreshments
were provided by Kathleen Pax-
ton, Rita Hoffmans, June Hall,

Minutes recorded by
Lenette Kottas, Secretary
Another swap meet has
come and gone and now we can
look forward to the summer and the
touring season.
We have a lot of new mem-
bers in the club and I would encour-
age any member, who has the de-
sire, to plan a tour this year. I am
hoping to see a very active schedule
this summer.
I will be taking a group
downtown to the Automobilia show
in July and Doug Schoemaker is
now the president of the Wichita
Area Car Club Council and will be
needing lots of help in the execu-
tion of the Lake Afton car show.
I can think of no better way for the
largest car club in the city to be rep-
resented than to be heavily involved
in the largest car show in the city.
Thank you for your continu-
ing commitment to the club and our
activities.
Ed Giesen, President
President’s Note
Editor’s Note
In the January newsletter I had
listed a, ―1929 speedster basket case‖ ,
for sale. I just received word that
someone in Nebraska had purchased
the speedster after reading our news-
letter.
Several other club members
have expressed an interest in reading
the ―For Sale‖ items in the regional
club newsletters. You will now find a
summary of these classified ads in our
newsletter.
A few years ago our club pub-
lished a cookbook filled with our fa-
vorite recipes. Since then each of us
have acquired new recipes that are
really good. If you have a new recipe
and would share it with us, please
send it to me and I will publish it in our
newsletter.
On a very sad note, Richard
and I have lost our oldest daughter,
Lori Black. She suffered from diabe-
tes for 37 years. We would like to
take this time to thank everyone for
expressing their sympathy to us. You
guys have really been a big help in get-
ting us through this very difficult time.

James and Judi Sharp were both raised on farms
near Great Bend, Jim in Barton County and Judi across the
county line in Stafford County. After they were married they
eventually settled in Derby, in the eighties, where they estab-
lished a Farm Bureau Insurance Agency. They also sell,
Hagerty Antique Auto Insurance.
They really didn’t have any interest in antique vehi-
cles, but more recently thought that they would like to have
an old commercial vehicle on which they could post their
insurance agency sign. They would use it for local festivities
such as the Derby Parades.
Jim’s grandfather, James Lonnen, farmed south of
Great Bend and in 1931 he purchased a new 1931 Model A
Truck. He used the truck until his death in 1961 at which
time his wife sold it to another farmer, Richard Brining who
was also a teacher and collector. It is believed that the 2nd
owner removed a grain blower and added a hydraulic lift, to
use in his farming operations.
Mr. Brining owned the truck until his death in 2006.
In May of 07, Jim‟s mother called to say that a Model A
Truck was to be auctioned off at Mr. Brining‟s estate sale.
After verifying that this was indeed the truck that Jim‟s
grandfather purchased new, Jim and Judi became very ex-
cited about trying to buy it at the auction.
When they arrived at the auction and inspected the
truck they found it to be in good condition with 41,000 miles
showing on the odometer. It looked as if it had always been
stored inside and had the original paint which was of course
faded after all those years.
Judi with her Tudor, "Bonnie"
There were several serious bidders on the truck but
Jim & Judi were the lucky buyers.
Jim employed a commercial hauler that he knew to
bring it back to Wichita. Once they had it home the word
spread and Donna and Gary Hileman solicited the Sharps
to join the Wichita A’s. They have also known the McHen-
rys and others from Derby for many years.
Jim came to club meetings and started to ask around
to find someone to work on the truck. Only one of the six
tires held air and the gas in the tank was so old that it had
turned to a syrup like substance.
In the July of 2008 he had the truck delivered to the shop of
The Model A Medic and the work began. All of the wheels
were powder coated and 6 new tires were installed. Then the
engine was removed and taken to John Stone for rebuilding.
The Medic also rebuilt the brakes and electrical system. The
brakes had the original script linings and were replaced only
because they had grease on them. Eric Weninger, The
Medic, says that overall this is the finest example of an origi-
nal Model A that he has ever seen. The truck was finished
by the end of October 08 and Jim drove it home.
Jim and Judi are very happy with the truck espe-
cially with its heritage, but soon Judi decided that she wanted
a Model A of her own for a smoother ride and to have room
to haul grand children.
They learned that Richard Kibbe was finishing a 29
Tudor.
A deal was made and the Sharps now own his and
her Model A’s.
They thought they should have names for there cars. Since
the Tudor colors are Bonnie Grey and Chelsea Blue they
named the Tudor, Bonnie. And the truck looks very large
and masculine so they named it Clyde, hence, ―Bonnie and
Clyde‖.
Jim and Judi rode with the Hilemans last year on the
trip to Turner’s Buffalo ranch and enjoyed the trip very
much. Now they are planning to lead a club tour to North
Central Kansas in the spring of this year. RG Jim Sharp with his 31 Truck, "Clyde"

Model A VIN Numbers
the cars accumulated wear and an engine change was nec-
essary then the system became ―cloudy‖ and more so as
time progressed. I can remember my dad ordering a re-
built engine from Montgomery Wards and no thought was
given to the engine number.
The number on the frame could only be accessed
by lifting the body and loosening the splash apron which
was a heavy task and not worth all of the effort.
As a result in later years it was uncommon to find
a car that the engine number matched the title, so you
weren’t sure what you had.
We provide this list of production numbers for
those who want to check their motor number to see if it
might be somewhere near the original date of the year of
production, based on the number on the title. RG
On modern vehicles the Vehicle Identification
Numbers (Vin Numbers) have been standardized since
1968 with a tag or tab on the inside of the windshield on
the body structure. This is a good system since the num-
ber can be easily accessed through the windshield by law
enforcement and service agencies.
In the days of the Model A Ford the system was-
n’t so simple. When the engine was assembled it was
stamped with a consecutive sequence number from the
first day of Model A production. When the engine
reached the chassis on the assembly line, then the frame
was stamped with the number of the engine.
You could readily verify the vin number by in-
specting the number on the drivers side of the engine. As
