Wisconsin trappers killed 1,204 otters during 2014-15. This year’s proposed changes could result in the killing of up to 32,000 otters - more than wiping out their presence in Wisconsin (80% killed in body grip traps and 20% in steel jaw traps). The otter population declined 35% between 1994 to 2007; an estimated 8,600 otters remain in Wisconsin.
