Mid-Columbia Minutes Teleconference March 20, 2021

The regular monthly meeting of the Mid-Columbia Chapter of the Ninety-Nines was called to order at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 20, 2021. The meeting was held via ZOOM teleconference.

Board members present were Chair Lynn Harbinson, Vice Chair Bonnie Molitor, Secretary Aileen Coverdell and Treasurer Marjy Leggett.

Mid-Columbia Chapter members and other guests present were Anne English, Valerie Faubel, Sandra Phenning, Betsy Anderson, Sara Purfield and Kate Mosley.

Attendee introductions were made.

Minutes from the February 2021 meeting were approved.

Next month is our scheduled airmarking of the Lind airport on Saturday the 17th. The group discussed the needed supplies and other logistics of the upcoming event. Aileen will do an inventory of current supplies and provide to Marjy and Lynn. She will also contact the Lind Mayor to confirm other information. Lynn will send out a survey to determine expected participation. Bonnie is still planning on bringing a trailer for comfort needs. As information becomes available it will be circulated to the group.

The July 2021 International meeting in Long Beach, CA has been cancelled. The Ninety-Nines Annual Meeting will be held online on July 10. For those who've already paid registration fees for the Long Beach Conference you should have received a separate communication from AKA Travel regarding rolling over your registration funds to the 2022 Conference or requesting a refund.

The SW and NW Sections are co-hosting a joint Section Meeting on September 9 - 12 2021 at South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. There is a special hotel code to receive the conference rate. Information can be found on their Facebook page. Registration is not yet available but will be soon.

You are reminded to vote in The Ninety-Nines, Inc. 2021 Mid-term Election of Directors and Trusts. The voting deadline is May 1, 2021. Members should have received an invitation to vote electronically or paper ballot depending on the selection made prior to the deadline. Candidate information can be found in the members section of The Ninety-Nines website and in the January/February 2021 Ninety-Nines magazine. New officers will be announced prior to the Annual Conference and will be inducted at the Annual Business Meeting.

My grandson graduated from A&P school in Helena, Montana, completed all his testing last fall and has been employed at Red Eagle Aviation in Kalispell. May be of interest for those going to visit Glacier Nat'l Park. Paulette adds that although they now live in Moses Lake, their plane is hangared in Walla Walla and they still have the flying bug.

Bonnie Molitor and Aileen Coverdell

Bonnie and Aileen continue to be a couple of our most active flyers, flying around Eastern Washington collecting Passport stamps. Their most recent trip took them to Goldendale on a beautiful Sunday morning.

On Saturday, April 17, the Mid-Columbia Chapter will be airmarking

Lind Airport 0S0. Our chapter has a long list of airports we have

airmarked. Here are some of them: Richland, Walla Walla, Martin

Airfield, Omak, Yakima, Cashmere, Moses Lake Municipal, La Grande,

Vista Field, and Prosser in 107 degree heat—(One reason why we don’t

airmark in August anymore).

As we prepare to airmark Lind, we will be following a long tradition

that started in the early 1930s. In the early days of flying, navigational

aids were not available like they are today. Pilots depended on

landmarks—roads, railroads, towns, and natural land features to tell

them where they were.

While participating in the first Transcontinental Air Race Derby in 1929,

Pancho Barnes lost her way while following railroad tracks. She landed

in a farmer’s field to inquire as to where she was. When the farmer

and his wife ran out to the plane shouting in Spanish, she realized she

was in Mexico, so she hopped back in the plane and took off again.

Oops! Wrong set of railroad tracks to follow!

As more pilots took to the skies, it became clear that some sort of

navigational aid was needed. That’s when the Ninety-Nines took it

upon themselves to assist by painting the names of airports. Of course,

most of the early airports were nothing more than dirt strips, so

painting was done on the rooftops of barns, water towers, silos, and

anywhere else that might be visible to the traveling pilot.

As airports began to be paved, airmarking was transferred from

rooftops to the runways and taxiways. This tradition continues across

the United States today. So watch for airport names as you fly cross

country. You will know those were done by a Ninety-Nine.

And be thankful we don’t have to climb barn roofs or water towers to

do our painting anymore!

This month appears to be the

turning point against COVID-19,

as vaccines are beginning to get

put into people’s arms in

increasing numbers. However, due to the possible mild

side effects the vaccine has, the FAA is enforcing a 48-

hour no-fly period after each of your COVID-19 vaccine

shots. As some people experience mild cold symptoms

after their vaccine, the FAA wants to ensure you are fit

to fly, so the 48-hour buffer is provided to allow you to

rest. Students may continue to do ground lessons, but

please do not fly until the 48-hour period is up. As

always, if your symptoms are present beyond 48 hours,

please follow the IMSAFE checklist and continue to rest

before scheduling lessons or flights. The COVID-19

vaccine is proven to be safe and effective, but it is our

responsibility to ground ourselves in order to allow the

vaccine to get into our system.

COVID Vaccine 48-hour No Fly Rule Spring is Here

And So are SQL Crosswinds

As spring and summer approaches, the winds in Eastern

Washington pick up, and we can get some strong

crosswinds. All pilots should understand the

importance of using proper crosswind taxi techniques

to protect the aircraft during movement on the surface.

It is easy for strong winds to catch ailerons and

elevators, creating a real hazard to taxiing aircraft.

Bank fully into a quartering headwind, and dive fully

away from a quartering tailwind. These maneuvers

should help with directional control and prevent

against flipping. It's good practice to use full crosswind

taxi technique at all times, so that your hands

instinctively know where to go when you need it. It

also sets you on the path toward better landings.
