Welcome to our 2011-2012 Season!

We have a terrific line up of concerts that I know you will enjoy–and if you haven’t already, I encourage you to purchase your season tickets for Prometheus Trio, Philomusica String Quartet, and We Six concerts, as well as to the many Conservatory Nights and Conservatory Sundays concerts we are offering this year. Please note that our annual Festive Soiree with Robin Pluer is

one-night only, December 8, at another historic ballroom–Turner Hall. Tickets are on sale through the Pabst Theater.

In response to the recent dramatic cuts to education in the Milwaukee Public Schools, the Conservatory is launching a new program entitled Music Counts. This after-school program will provide a comprehensive music curriculum for early elementary students who no longer have access to a full music program in their school. The program will be held at Elm Creative Arts School on Walnut Street and will use an income-based sliding-scale tuition, making the program financially and geographically accessible.

For over a dozen years, the Conservatory Connections program has provided Milwaukee Public Schools with programs to supplement and enhance their offerings, and we have had a wonderful relationship with many school music teachers. As Milwaukee’s community music school, we feel it is our role to step in and provide this instruction for Milwaukee’s youth. An early start is critical for students who may wish to become musicians, and studies have proven that music education helps children across the board with their studies.

We are so glad that you have joined us for this concert and hope to see you again in the concert hall or in the classroom!

B IOGR APHIES

Eric Jacobson, trumpet WCM faculty member since 2009. Eric Jacobson is a professional trumpet player, clinician, com-poser, and private instructor residing in Milwau-kee, Wisconsin. Eric freelances in the Milwaukee and Chicago area playing in groups such as The Luis Diaz Quintet, Nabori, De La Buena, and leading his own jazz quartet. Eric has been fortunate to experience performances and lessons with numerous well-known artists, including Maynard Ferguson, Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, Jim Rotondi, Tito Puente Jr., Eric Benet, and Wynton Marsalis. Eric was recently recognized in Jazzscope magazine by David Hoffman as having “a gorgeous round sound on both the trumpet and flugelhorn” and “on his way to being a jazz giant.” Eric also teaches at MYSO, Wauwatosa West High School’s Jazz Ensemble and assists the Wauwatosa West Marching Band. In 2001 Eric released his debut jazz CD entitled Inspiration which features some of Milwaukee’s best jazz musicians as well as New York trumpet sensation Brian Lynch. Eric is currently working on his second album. Eric Schoor, tenor saxophone Saxophonist Eric Schoor, a native of Southeast-ern Wisconsin, cur-rently performs ex-tensively throughout the Milwaukee area. Eric has had the good fortune of working with many of the area’s most accomplished jazz artists. He is currently a student at UW-Milwaukee pursuing two B.F.A.s (Jazz Studies and Multiple Woodwinds). Valuing diversity in music, Eric performs in a variety of styles from bebop to classical to pit orchestras to funk/rock. Eric can be heard regu-larly in Milwaukee’s jazz venues such as The Jazz Estate and Caroline’s as well as Thursdays at O’Donoghue’s with Gary Christiansen’s All-Star SUPERband.

Paul Silbergleit, guitar WCM faculty member since 1996 and a member of the Conservatory’s We Six jazz sextet. B.A., Oberlin College. An accomplished jazz composer as well as performer, Mr. Silbergleit has played clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout the area as both a leader and a sideman. He has appeared with Jack McDuff, Jon Faddis, Richie Cole, Tierney Sutton, Melvin Rhyne, Brian Lynch, David Hazeltine, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, among others. Both his 1996 debut CD Silberglicity (on which other Conservatory faculty members are featured) and his 2003 release, My New Attitude, have made it onto the jazz charts with nationwide airplay, and he can also be heard on the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say. Mr. Silbergleit also teaches at Cardinal Stritch University, and is a featured instructor in Hal Leonard’s Guitar Licks Goldmine DVD series.

Mark Davis, piano WCM faculty member since 1992. B.S., with honors, Skidmore College. Mr. Davis is Jazz De-partment Chair and a member of the Conser-vatory’s We Six. His WCM instructors included Adelaide Banaszynski and David Hazeltine. Later studies included work with jazz legend Barry Harris. He has performed with many jazz luminaries, including Jimmy Heath, Charles McPherson, Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, and Frank Morgan. He is also on the faculty of Wisconsin Lutheran College, Cardinal Stritch University and Alverno College. Mr. Davis can be heard on the We Six CD Bird Say.

Jeff Hamann, bass WCM faculty member since 1998. A member of the Conservatory’s We Six jazz sextet, Mr. Hamann attended the Wisconsin Conserva-tory of Music, winning first place in the Jazz Studies Scholarship competition four years in a row. He has worked as a clinician and jazz festival judge in the Milwaukee, Kenosha and Waukesha public schools as well as at

UW-Milwaukee, UW-Mad-ison and UW-Green Bay. Performing with such well-known artists as Frank Morgan, Marlena Shaw, Steve Allen, and Eric Alexander, he has toured throughout the Midwest and has appeared at Jazz Yantra in Bombay, India.

Jeff is also the bassist on Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya

Know show, airing Saturdays on Wisconsin Public Radio and broadcast nationally on NPR stations. He can be heard on the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say.

David Bayles, drums WCM faculty member since 1997. B.F.A. Music Education UW-Milwaukee. A member of the Conservatory’s We Six, Mr. Bayles has worked with such jazz artists as Slide Hampton, Barry Harris, David Hazeltine, Brian Lynch, Jack McDuff, Bob Mintzer, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Melvin Rhyne, and Ernie Watts. Dave performs at jazz clubs and music festivals throughout the Midwest. Recording credits include the Luis Diaz Quintet (On the Edge), the Curt Hanrahan Quintet (Hang Time), the Juli Wood Quintet (Movin’ and Groovin’) and the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say. Dave’s orchestral credits include timpani with the Rome Festival Orchestra and percussion with the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. As a clinician for Yamaha Music Corporation and Zildjian Cymbals, he travels and teaches widely throughout the U.S. and Canada. Dave also teaches percussion at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, WI.

Raymond Mueller holds a B.M. and M.M. with high honors from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. His principal teachers include James Yoghourtjian, John Holmquist and Gilbert Biberian. Mr. Mueller has taught classical guitar, coached ensembles and conducted a highly successful series of performance classes for his students at the Wiscon-sin Conservatory of Music since 1977. Mr. Mueller is a former member of the WCM Classical Guitar Quartet and the Vi-ennese Guitar Duo. He currently performs as a soloist playing on historic instruments.

GUITAR LEGACY SERIESRaymond Mueller honors the great gui-tarists of the past by playing programs of works from each guitarist’s repertoire on an instrument that they were famous for playing. This program is divided into three parts with the first part focusing on works written for Segovia by Manuel Ponce, Alexandre Tansman and Fed-erico Moreno Torroba. The second part consists of transcriptions of music by Luis Milan, Luis de Narvaez, Robert de Visee and Enrique Granados as well as original music for guitar by Fernando Sor and Francisco Tarrega. The third part returns to music inspired by or dedicated to Segovia by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Jason Seed, compositions/guitar Jason studied music composition at Indiana University with David Baker and privately with composers Douglas Lofstrom, William Russo and Ileana Perez-Velasquez. Seed’s mu-sic has been per-formed by vari-ous ensembles in jazz, rock and classical settings across the United States and in Hol-land, Germany and Poland. He has per-formed as a guitarist with Present Music (performing the mu-sic of Astor Piazolla, Elena Kats-Chernin and Michael Torke), The Jessica Lurie Ensemble, Trey Gunn (of King Crimson), Bill Frisell and nu-merous groups of his own. In 2005, Seed created the Jason Seed Elixir En-semble, which went on to win Best Album in the 2008 Independent Music Awards.

Dan Armstrong, bass A member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra bass section since 1995, and associate principal bass in the Mil-waukee Symphony from 1983 to 1995, Armstrong’s career has spanned early music (he was a founding member of the Tafelmusik baroque ensemble) to contemporary (as a founding member of Present Music and a regular in the CSO’s MusicNow series). He has per-formed as a bass soloist on WFMT, on the Chicago Symphony Chamber Music Series and at the Wisconsin Conserva-tory of Music. Mr. Armstrong and his wife, writer Judith Harway, reside in Shorewood, WI.

Glenn Asch, violin/viola As a member of the Milwaukee Sym-phony, Mr. Asch has frequently been a violin soloist with MSO, playing a dynamic range of pieces from romantic concertos, bluegrass and Irish fiddle to jazz over his own arrangements. He wrote and performed a violin concerto with the Denver Chamber Orchestra and co-authored Mel-Bay’s Anthology

of Jazz Violin Styles. Mr. Asch also stud-ied Indian violin in Bangalore, India. As a teacher, Glenn volunteers one day per week teaching strings with his wife,

Lori Asch, in the orchestral program at Bayview High School on Milwau-kee’s South Side. Mr. Asch’s newest interest is in Af-rican music, and he frequently performs with the Senega-lese group Jali-

kunda at Milwaukee’s Club Timbuktu. Mr. Asch lives on

Milwaukee’s East Side.

Helen Reich, viola Helen has been a member of the Mil-waukee Symphony viola section since 1988, and previously performed with orchestras in Sacramento, Fort Worth, Syracuse, and Caracas, Venezuela. A founding member of the now defunct baroque chamber music ensemble Bach Babes, Ms. Reich has also per-formed for the new music group Pres-ent Music as well as the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra. Helen lives in Cudahy, WI.

Scott Tisdel, cello Currently Acting Principal Cellist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Scott has served as Principal Cellist of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra since 1987, and has appeared as soloist with both ensembles. Prior to his arrival in Milwaukee, Mr. Tisdel was Principal Cel-list of the Florida Orchestra (Tampa) and a member of both the Oakland and San Jose Symphonies. Scott has been a Wisconsin Conservatory of Music fac-ulty member since 2000 and is a found-ing member of the Conservatory’s Prometheus Trio. He performs regularly at the Washington Island Music Festival, and lives in Shorewood, WI with his wife, pianist Stefanie Jacob.

George Lindquist WCM faculty member since 1972. B.A. Carthage College with a Diploma in Classical Guitar Performance; M.M. Musicology University of Wisconsin-Madison. Studied classical guitar with James Yoghourtjian and lute/early guitar in master classes. George Lindquist has been one of the foremost teachers of classical guitar in southern Wisconsin for more than 35 years. He also teaches classical guitar and directs guitar ensembles at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and at the U.W. Parkside in Kenosha. As a performing classical guitarist, he has been a member of several ensembles, including a classical guitar trio, a flute and guitar duo, and a guitar and harpsichord duo. He also has a degree in musicology and occasionally performs on the lute and baroque guitar. He has performed at universities, colleges, music societies, public libraries, recital halls, and private venues throughout Wisconsin and Illinois and on Wisconsin Public Radio. He is one of the guitarists featured on the CD Milwaukee Guitar: Strictly Solo and can be heard on recordings with the Master Singers of Milwaukee and the Festival Choir of Madison. Mr. Lindquist is a former board member of the Milwaukee Classical Guitar Society and is past Associate Archivist of the Guitar Foundation of America. Tom Clippert WCM faculty member

since 2004. Mr. Clippert is also currently a faculty

member of the Merit School of Music in Chicago.

He received his Master of Music degree from the Yale

School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery.

Mr. Clippert was the recipient of Yale University’s Eliot Fisk

Guitar Prize. Mr. Clippert is an active performer both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, and his repertoire reflects his wide ranging musical interests.

Peter Roller Peter Roller has been exploring guitar styles in a variety of cultural directions since discovering music like the blues of Mississippi, Fred McDowell and the Bluegrass of Flatt & Scruggs as a teen. Over the past thirty years, while working as a professional musician and college instructor, he has written a body of guitar-led original music that leans variously towards Hawaiian slack key, bossa nova, Piedmont blues, and steel guitar jazz. Roller released his first full length CD of such pieces, Blue Fog, in Spring 2010, including his Dobro instrumental “Rancho Mirage,” the only work previously available on the widely popular Narada compilation Masters of Acoustic Guitar. Roller is based in Milwaukee and teaches in the Music Department at Alverno College. He has played and recorded with prominent area performers, including bluesman Steve Cohen, worldbeat band Paul Cebar & the Milwaukeeans, and gospel quartet the Masonic Wonders. Previously, Roller was the guitar accompanist for first generation country bluesman Yank Rachell, acting as producer and playing on his Bling Pig release Blues Mandolin Man.

Matt Schroeder WCM Faculty member since 1992, B.F.A. with honors in Guitar Performance, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Matthew Schroeder is a Milwaukee based WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) winning guitarist who is equally at home on electric or acoustic guitar. Matt is one of a handful of players to graduate, with honors, from the short lived cooperative program between The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and The University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee with a performance degree in American fingerstyle guitar. As a fingerstyle guitarist, Mr. Schroeder studied under John Stropes. He has performed in America and Canada, been featured on local television and radio, and can be heard on the CD compilation American Finger-Style Guitar circa 1999. His debut CD Signal was released April 2006. Matt currently performs acoustically as a soloist, in a duo with vocalist Lynda Lee and with the trio La Guitarra. As a rock guitarist, Mr. Schroeder has performed extensively throughout the midwest and beyond. Past Bands include Blackfish, Pet Engine, Steve Grimm and the Thrill Cats, and Jamie Jess. He currently plays for the WAMI-award winning Barbeez, as well as Slumpbuster and The Scott Berendt Band. www.matthewschroeder.net. Matt is also a featured instructor on the Hal Leonard DVDs Acoustic Guitar Licks Goldmine and Rock Guitar Licks Goldmine which were released in Spring 2011. Peter Baime WCM faculty member since 1969. Mr. Baime began his studies with Nino Bernardo in the U.S. and in Spain with the legendary gypsy guitarists Diego Gastor and Paco Gastor. He began his performance career in 1965. In 1996 Mr. Baime joined the faculty at Cardinal Stritch University. In addition to teaching, he has performed more than 2,500 concerts in public schools. He has scored, performed, and recorded six documentary films airing on PBS. Mr. Baime performs extensively in the U.S. and Puerto Rico as well as in Spain, Canada, Italy, and Mexico. He has recordings on the Dr. Black and Narada labels. He has commissioned several contemporary and now-published works

for classical guitar. In October 2000 he won an Emmy Award from the National Academy for Television Arts & Sciences for his original score in Indigenous Always. Colin O’Brien See Biography on page 15. Jason Behr WCM faculty member since 2009. M.M. in classical guitar performance, Peck School of the Arts, UW-Milwaukee; B.F.A., UW-Milwaukee in collaboration with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Since the age of 18, Mr. Behr has been an active teacher and performer in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. While studying under Professor Rene Izquierdo, Mr. Behr was afforded the opportunity to participate in master classes by guitarists, including The Assad Brothers, Jorge Caballero, Jerome Ducharme, Marcin Dylla, Evgenij Gridiushko, William Kanengiser, The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Lorenzo Micheli, Jorge Morel, and Michael Partington, among others. In addition to teaching, Mr Behr is a member of the Milwaukee Guitar Quartet and maintains an active performance schedule around Milwaukee and abroad. In 2008, Mr. Behr was asked by composer Carlos Rivera to record Cancion, his acclaimed solo work for classical guitar. In 2009, composer and guitarist Stepan Rak requested Mr. Behr to perform the American premiere of his new work titled Royal Suite. Mr. Behr was a recipient of the Dr. Shinichi Suzuki scholar award in 2010.

Phil Grossman, violinPhillip Grossman is a retired music veteran of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s first violin section, of which he was a member since 1970. He has been a member of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music faculty since 1971. His B.M. Violin Performance degree is from Indiana University. Mr. Grossman’s teachers at the University were Josef Gingold, Daniel Guilet and William Primrose.

Colin O’Brien WCM faculty member since 2003. Mr. O’Brien studied with banjoist and Bela Fleck mentor Tony Trischka as well as classical guitar with Steven Novacek at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. He studied fingerstyle guitar with John Stropes at the Wisconsin Conservatory and Peter Roller. His band, Salt Creek, plays “funky esoteric bluegrass” throughout the Midwest. Salt Creek was awarded Best Bluegrass Band by WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) in 2004 and 2005. As a performer, Mr. O’Brien has shared the stage with Kansas, Willy Porter, Dan Tyminski, Paul Cebar and others. His CD Pressure in the West received rave reviews in the local and national press.
