Page 2: WHYDO WE GIVE? 2015-2016 ANNUALANNUAL GIVING ... · WILL THE 2015-2016 DONATIONS BENEFIT? More than $225,000 was raised this school year through the campaign, including donations

WHAT The annual giving campaign is a coordinated effort by JCHS to raise funds that best serve its current and future students. The funds support a myriad of programs and help balance the operating budget. The generosity of our alumni, parents, employees, community members, and stakeholders supplements the costs of academic and extracurricular programs, provides tuition assistance for students, attracts and retains excellent teachers, fulfills the wish lists of the staff, and much more.

Tuition Assistancefor Students The need for tuition assistance continues to climb, with more students than ever applying for financial assistance. Dedicated families can be forced to withdraw their students because of their financial situation if funding cannot be provided. Action Plans Based on the 2015

Strategic PlanThe five-year strategic plan was finalized in May 2015 after a year of hard work by stakeholders, employees, and community members. Now the school is ready to move forward with the goals and objectives that have been approved. These ambitious action plans include renovating the school, adding additional security elements, upgrading curriculum initiatives, and much more. In the near future, JCHS would like to relocate the art room to better serve our students.

Advanced Placement Professional Development for TeachersCurrently, JCHS offers 17 AP classes and is proud to be the only school in the four-county area to participate in the AP Capstone Program. Providing professional development opportunities for teachers would allow them to broaden the scope of the classes that are offered to students, better equipping them for college.

WHERE

IS THE ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN?

WERE 2014-2015FUNDS ALLOCATED? WHOWILL THE 2015-2016

DONATIONS BENEFIT?More than $225,000 was raised this school year through the campaign, including donations made to memorial funds, the athletic department, specific wish list items, and unrestricted gifts. Nearly $15,000 of those funds were also donated by our extremely generous faculty and staff. Thanks to the support of our community, alumni, parents, and friends of JCHS, these funds were allocated to the wishes of the donors, and helped to make the following dreams a reality:

Tuition AssistanceApproximately one-third of our local student population is in need of financial assistance to attend JCHS, and this past school year, more than $200,000 was distributed to families who desired a Catholic education for their children. As a diocesan high school, we are solely funded through the tuition and donations as JCHS is not directly subsidized by parishes or the diocese.

Staff DevelopmentThe JCHS staff attended the NCEA Convention & Expo, the largest private-education association gathering in the nation, in April 2015. Everyone returned to campus re-energized, full of new knowledge, and bonded as a faculty. Additionally, a full-time Resource teacher and a Director of Campus Ministry were hired and will begin serving students for the 2015-2016 school year.

Upgraded Resources for AthletesSome donors chose to allocate funds to underwrite the softball scoreboard, a new scoreboard table in the gymnasium, a batting cage for the softball team, a pitching mound for the baseball team, and a lacrosse wall for the players to use in practice.

Creation of the Cole Coppola Learning Commons In June 2015, the school began renovating the media center to create a new state-of-the-art Learning Commons at the Monsignor Beerhalter Library. The building will now feature collaborative workstations to better serve our students. Five zones have been designed with multiple modalities, including a student lounge area, a TEAL lab, and high-impact learning environments.

HISTORY CELEBRATING 50 YEARS AT OUR CURRENT LOCATION

The history of John Carroll High School dates back to its founding year, 1916, when the original St. Anastasia School building at Tenth Street and Orange Avenue was erected. The first year of high school was added in 1932, followed by the addition of a grade level each subsequent year, culminating in the first graduating class from St. Anastasia in 1936. The elementary school was relocated to its present site on Thirty-Third Street in 1961 and in the fall of 1962, St. Anastasia High School was renamed Central Catholic High School. In 1965, a new high school was built on the present Delaware Avenue site adjoining the grade school and was named John Carroll High School in honor of Pope John XXIII and Bishop Coleman Carroll.

For 50 years, John Carroll’s current campus has served thousands of students. Our founding generations of parents, priests, and benefactors gave of themselves in order to make life better for the students entrusted to our care. Their actions testified to the power of faith, hope, and love. Let us take inspiration from their legacy. Your gift to the 50th Anniversary Annual Giving Campaign will embrace and continue this spirit. Your response to our present needs will assure the long-term health of this wonder-filled place of learning.
