What is WordPress

• Content Management System (CMS)

CMS: A Content Management System (CMS) is a computer program that allows adding and editing of website content as well as maintenance from a central interface.

What is a database driven website? It takes the content and coding and separates them up. All your data is stored in a database. All your website design code is in php template files. When a web page is requested, the code grabs the correct content and outputs it.

Wordpress began development back in the 2001s.

So what is the difference between .com and .org?

Difference:WordPress.com is a hosting platform that anyone can sign up for free. All the technical maintenance work is taken care of. Installation, upgrades, spam, backups and more. Cons: 210+ Themes only. Cannot customize them. Can’t modify the PHP code, and cannot upload plugins. Theme is a set of files that make up the design of the website. Plugin is a small set of files to do one specific task. Like a Contact Form.

WordPress.org is a self hosted platform; meaning you need a web host in order to get started. WordPress.org gives you the ability to upload any theme and any plugin. Therefore,you have complete control over the code (if your a nerd, like me). You will have to handle upgrades, spam, and technical issues yourself (or support person).

WordPress was previously known only as a blogging platform. People just used it to post about news, events, and topics related to their website. Blogging on WordPress was so easy and simple that more and more websites started switching to it.

The WordPress software grew as well. Then WordPress begin to transition into a full blown Content Management Systems (CMS). Many website still just use the software as a blogging system, like CNN Anderson Cooper, because of how powerful it is.

Large Corporation love WordPress because of how fast and dynamic it can be. Bonnaroo and Best Buy both use it. Bonnaroo for all the event information, lineups, info, tickets and more. Best Buy Mobile for news and reviews about the hardware they sell.

The beauty of WordPress is that it can be used for any type of website for any type of market and need. Even to make a system like eBay or full eCommerce shops.
