What is the goal
Why should you care
The Details
Summary
Q&A
THE GOAL
Migrate your SCOM to the 2016 version
or plan to do so
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
Makes life of the SCOM Admin easier (you)
And makes the other users of SCOM's services happier (or less disappointed)
Make better use of your hardware resources
Monitor more (though a lot is possible with 2012 R2 as well)
Stay up to date / Supportability
NITTY GRITTY DETAILS
Some examples of features and changes which will help:
The SCOM Admin
The SCOM Operators
The design and resource usage
SCOM 2016 INSTALLATION
Installs on Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2016 - Full versions
SQL 2014 and 2016 for clean install
SCOM Console install on Windows 10 and 2016 is supported
Mind the SQL CLR and ReportViewer prerequisites
Web Console still requires Silverfreakinglight, but big part is now HTML5 based and
more to follow!
Windows 2003 and XP agents no longer supported
Does not say it does not work, though only with 2012R2 agent and if the
machine has prerequisites like PowerShell installed.
Do not use another DB name than standard (Blog)!
KNOWN PROBLEMS / TUNING
Known problems:
SCOM Console crashes after October Windows cumulative updates on Win10 & Server 2016
Agent crashes IIS Application pool
SharePoint 2010 Pack does not work due to DLL reference
Scheduled Maintenance does not work (fix)
Tuning:
SCOM management server registry key tuning
IN-PLACE UPGRADE
Upgrade from SCOM 2012 R2 UR9 and up is recommended for in-place upgrades.
Windows 2012 R2 and SQL 2012 SP2 is supported.
Procedure is a few steps more than an UR upgrade, but not difficult to do
Make sure your SCOM infra is healthy before you start the procedure!

So no longer single line command.
Also no need to escape characters inside the scripts
Target a single computer or group of computers with the new Shell Command Templates and a new agent task option
IMPROVED PERFORMANCE FOR LINUX/UNIX
MONITORING AND SCALING
Real scale improvements for cross-plat monitoring(was max 500 per MS and now 1000 per MS)
HOW?
Replacing the WSMAN Sync API with
Async MI API
=Windows Management Infrastructure using CIM
Standards which are part of the new OMI agent
IMPROVED PERFORMANCE SCOM CONSOLE
Less time to grab a coffee
Work is being done in parts, so expect more at future update rollups

EXTRA POINT WE WANT TO MAKE
SCOM is alive and being updated to cover more monitoring scenarios
Currently it can monitor things which are not possible in OMS
It is not replaced by OMS, but augmented in both directions
Keep in mind a lot of work goes into OMS these days,
