Why Use the Gaggle Human Monitoring Service? The Gaggle Human Monitoring Service (HMS) is free for all Gaggle customers. If your school isn’t already taking advantage of HMS, here are some reasons to give it a try. Let teachers teach. Reviewing blocked messages and content can take hours of a teacher’s valuable time. We’ve found that clusters of serious incidents come at the beginning and at the end of semesters. You can use our Cyber Security Agents to free up your most valuable resource, especially when teachers already are stretched to the limit. We talk trash so you don’t have to. Beezin’, blue silk and CCC: Do you know the meanings of these words and phrases? HMS agents stay up-to-date on current slang, drug references and hurtful phrases and insults. An experienced Cyber Security Agent can quickly review any item to determine its severity. Speedy delivery. HMS works 24/7. If a Cyber Security Agent finds a message that reveals a serious student situation, he or she will notify your emergency contacts, even if it’s late at night or on the weekend. If these items are left for the next day, it could be too late to intervene. Impartial judges. While students receive a fair share of warnings for questionable content, HMS doesn’t review content through a personal bias about a particular student. In other words, we won’t let something slide “since he’s a good kid,” or come down harder because “she’s always causing trouble.” HMS responses are uniformly applied to all students. Curriculum Corner:Fun Ways to Teach Your Students How to Use Gaggle

We’ve come up with four simple activities to introduce your students to Gaggle. If you have your own ideas, we would love to hear them!

1. Within your Class Page, have students post a photo of something they did this summer. Have them write one sentence that describes the photograph. Then, create an assignment instructing students to comment on at least three of their classmates’ photos.

2. Upload Documents such as your class syllabus or other helpful resources. Demonstrate to your students how they can download the files to their computers by going into the Digital Locker and selecting the file.

3. Create a “get to know you” questionnaire and attach it to an Assignment. Have your students complete the questionnaire as their first Assignment. Here’s a link to a sample “Back to School” questionnaire that one of our trainers, Tracy Duncan, used when she was a teacher: http://bit.ly/1rIzuWu.

Next, use Mark It Up! to comment on their answers. Trust us, this will go a long way in building rapport with your students. Remember, you’ll always have easy access to the completed questionnaires because copies stay attached to the Assignments.

4. Use email to design an online scavenger hunt. Send the next clue once students have “found” the answer to a previous clue. Sending email to your entire class has never been easier!

Our onsite teacher training is available to provide even

more ideas on how to integrate Gaggle in your classroom. We might be biased, but we can’t think of a better way to meet

your professional development requirements.

School Spotlight:Gaggle is Becoming Teachers’ New Assignment Basket

Inside the classrooms of Alhambra Elementary School District in Arizona, teachers were growing frustrated with the Zoho online word processor, its timeout errors and some other problems.

“We saw their frustration and struggle,” recalls Ruben Montoya, district Instructional Technologist. “The product we were using just wasn’t very reliable anymore inside the classroom.”

Gaggle stepped in and recommended a switch from Zoho to Google Drive integration with Gaggle Digital Lockers. During the transition —and even now—the Alhambra technology team frequently uses Gaggle’s live chat service to ask questions about Google Drive Integration.

The Gaggle-Google connection was such a smooth process that, within months, Ruben himself witnessed the power of the integration. “Students were now collaborating on two presentations at the same time,” he said.

“They were able to simultaneously create, edit and collaborate without any issues.”

With student safety still a top priority, Alhambra continues to use Gaggle email. Gaggle’s Human Monitoring Service (HMS) monitors and filters email as well any content created and shared within Google Drive. “Our students are aware of Gaggle and they are very careful with what they say,” said Ruben. “They understand that Gaggle is part of their school day, and even at home.”

A big district-wide initiative this year includes a 1:1 program using Macbook Airs and iPads. The Digital Locker integration with Drive allows students to always have access to their work and assignments. “With single user sign in on the iPads, Gaggle’s Digital Lockers have become the answer for student storage,” said Ruben. “Many of our teachers, and even our students, likely use Google’s apps in their personal lives, so everything looks familiar to them. They’re comfortable using something they know.”

Ruben expects Alhambra teachers to go even further with Gaggle and Google, ultimately creating paperless classrooms. He has similar plans. “I love to push Gaggle to its limit,” he said. “And our teachers are starting to think of Gaggle more like the basket they used to keep at the corner of their desk, all while keeping their students safe.”

Time to Check Your Browser VersionYou’ve seen the new Gaggle user interface by now. However, if you are experiencing problems accessing Gaggle, there’s likely a simple solution.

Check to make sure that you have a current web browser. To use Gaggle, you’ll need one of the most recent versions of the following four web browsers:

For example: The current version of Internet Explorer (IE) is IE 11. Gaggle supports IE versions 11, 10 and 9. When IE 12 is released, we’ll drop support for IE 9.

Similarly, Google recently updated its Google Drive optimizations. If you’re using our Google Drive integration, you will need to have one of the two most recent versions of the same web browsers listed earlier. Also, make sure that your operating system is up to date. The following operating systems are supported for Google Drive and the Docs editors.

If both your web browser and operating system meet these requirements, any unexpected behavior could be caused by having cookies or JavaScript disabled in your web browser. If you’re not seeing what you expect in Gaggle, or in Google Drive, it’s probably a good idea to talk to your school or district technology coordinator. And of course, let us know if we can help!

Meet a Gaggler The newest member of the Gaggle leadership team, Chris Wheedleton is passionate about expanding educational opportunities for students of all ages.

As Vice President of Sales at Gaggle, he leads our K-12 sales team. Prior to coming to Gaggle, Chris was Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, at Educate Online and helped the company become one of the premier school improvement partners to districts throughout the country.

“When you look at some of the other companies in the K-12 market, they’re asking districts to fit into what they do,” he said. “What attracted me to Gaggle is that we give you the opportunity to have a customizable solution that helps students in an area that, right now, very few people are doing—safely integrating technology into what’s actually happening inside the classroom.”

Chris started his career as a high school Social Studies teacher and developed his customer relationship focus and collaborative partnership building skills while working at Nabisco, Kraft, and Pepsi. He made his way back to education with EdisonLearning where he developed the company’s strategic planning and business development structures.

“There are opportunities for schools, particularly around safety and security, to make a big impact inside the classroom,” he said. “I’m looking forward to working alongside each of you to understand better how Gaggle can help you this school year and in years to come.”

A Myers-Briggs certified facilitator and also a Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Chris lives in suburban Philadelphia.
