Why the Caged Bird Singsf o r t r e b l e v o i c e s , h o r n a n d s t r i n g s
When the wind blows soft through the springing grass
But a prayer the he sends from his heart’s deep core,
When his wings are bruised and his bosom sore, -
When the first bird sings and the first bud opens,And the faint perfume from its chalice steals -
When the sun is bright on the upland slopes,
But a plea that upward to Heaven he flings -
For he must fly back to his perch and cling.
When he beats his bars and would be free;
I know why the caged bird beats his wing
And the river floats like a sheet of glass,
I know what the caged bird feels, alas!
Til its blood is red on the cruel bars;
I know why the caged bird sings!
I know what the caged bird feels.
...I know why he beats his wing
It’s not a carol of joy or glee,
