Why size does matter Effect of class size on student’s performance Who says size doesn't matter? Well it does when it comes to classroom size. Public schools in general have a lot more students than private schools. For years, schools in America and other countries have been studying the effect of class size on students' performance. Public schools need to have a large class size due to budget reason. But what about institutes for teaching English to ESL students? Is it better to have a large class where people can share ideas? Or is it better to have a small one where teacher can have more time to answer individual question? For language schools and other similar institutes, it has been proven that students can absorb more of what is being taught in a small class size. Big class size vs. Small class size It wouldn't be fair if we totally dismiss large class size and instantly say aye to smaller ones. There are advantages to having lots of students in a class. More students would foster more ideas and information exchange. Large class also gives the students a chance to meet different people and make friends. On the other hand, there are drawbacks to all of this. More people do not mean that you’ll make more friends. Some of you may already have the experience of being in a large class. Sometimes there are so many people that you don't even know who to talk to (except to the person sitting next to you). Depending on how the teacher runs the class, it can turn either into a boring lecture or a lively interactive learning. Thai students who would like to go study abroad, get into prestigious university, or upgrade their career are showing increased interest in improving their English language skills. One language school in particular called Thai Language Solutions , has observed that students would get more out of their studies in a small class. This has become one of the main reasons why the school chose to limit their class size to a maximum of only ten students.
