Why Should Cross and Trial Grieve Me? Hymn 756 Pastor
Weinkauf
Sickness. Worry. Change. Loneliness. Loss. Despair. Depression.
Grief. Throughout this pandemic, we all have felt most, if not all,
of these emotions. We are grieving – grieving for the normalcy we
had before, grieving for the plans that were canceled or put on
hold, grieving for the certain pleasures of life that have been
covered with caution. We grow numb with grief and worry. We see
perils of government policy and media actions on the news. We are
surrounded by sin and death. We cry in lament, “O Lord, how long?”
How can we sing while suffering? It is hard! But if what we sing
acknowledges both our suffering and Christ who took upon that
suffering for us –then we have every reason to sing of Him who
conquered sin and death. Past the anger of our hardened hearts, the
worry of our anxious minds, and the doubt of our troubled
conscience – through all the suffering of this world, this comfort
is our greatest joy: Why should cross and trial grieve me? Christ
is near, with His cheer; Never will He leave me. Who will rob me of
the heaven, That God’s Son for me won, When His life was given?
(LSB 756:1) Singing God’s Word is what we as Christians are called
to do as baptized children of God. Singing in the midst of
suffering is not to distract us from sorrow; rather, it gives voice
to our sorrow and rests in the confidence we have in Christ.
Singing the Church’s song – the fullness of Christ’s love for us on
the cross – is the very way in which we can sing while suffering.
When we encounter the many woes of this life, we can sing about the
comfort of Christ who bore our suffering on the cross and who bears
our sufferings even now. When life’s troubles rise to meet me,
Though their weight may be great, They will not defeat me. God, my
loving Savior, sends them; He who knows all my woes, Knows how best
to end them. (LSB 756:2) Should we be singing through suffering?
Even through this pandemic? Absolutely! Whether you are with others
or by yourself, and whether you like your voice or not, you can
sing with true confidence in the words God has given us to sing.
God wants us to cry to Him in times of need and to find rest in the
place where He promises to be – that is, in His Word and
Sacraments. We can rest assured knowing that God has overcome the
world. He has overcome sin and suffering on the cross. And He has
given us the song of the Gospel that will never be silent and never
die, even in the midst of a pandemic! Blessed Lententide.

Give Up! Vicar Christiansen
Should you give up something for Lent? Should you fast? Does
fasting mean giving up treats like soda, coffee, or movies? It’s
certainly good to avoid crazy amounts of sugar and to remember to
exercise. It’s good to read a book instead of staring at your
screen, but why is it good? Building healthy habits is certainly
fine outward training, but what should such bodily preparation
point us toward? What’s the point of giving something up? Fasting
is refocusing, making yourself dependent on what’s important, and
moving away from something you’re dependent on. It’s not merely
giving something up, it’s trading your dependence on one thing for
something better. What is it that you depend on? Is it having three
square meals per day? Is it coffee? Is it sleep? Is it attention?
Do you depend on your money? Do you depend on being entertained,
rather than willfully doing something more important, something
hard to think about? At the Lord’s temptation in the wilderness,
Jesus was about to begin His difficult, important work of winning
your salvation. This was right before Jesus began His earthly
ministry, right before he began His work of teaching, healing,
suffering, and dying, “Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the
wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days
and forty nights, he was hungry” (Matthew 4:1-2). Jesus was without
that which He depended on, right before He was tempted. He was not
looking for entertainment, but willingly embraced suffering. And
then—Jesus responded with Holy Scripture: “You shall worship the
Lord Your God, and Him only shall you serve” (4:10b). What does
fasting prepare you for? To hear the Word of God at Church, to read
it in your homes. You fast in order to prepare yourself to receive
the gifts that Christ won, by His giving up everything for you on
the cross, when “Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and
yielded up His spirit” (27:50). Jesus depended on His Father, and
completed His hard work of salvation by His resurrection. As you
heard of Ash Wednesday, fasting isn’t meant to “be seen by others”
(6:17-18), but should direct you to repent, to give up what you’re
dependent on. Instead, depend fully on Christ, and receive His
flesh and blood. Don’t give up! Trade. Build the good habit of
making time to read Holy Scripture. Read through the whole Gospel
of Matthew before Easter! “Fasting and bodily preparation are
certainly fine outward training. But that person is truly worthy
and well prepared who has faith in these words: “Given and shed for
you for the forgiveness of sins.” But anyone who does not believe
these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, for the
words “for you” require all hearts to believe” (Small Catechism:
Sacrament of the Altar).

churches that sign-up for a day; this is our day! We are also
contacting all Lutheran churches in the area to join us as well. We

act in love and charity confessing Christ is the one who sanctified
the womb and from the moment of
conception this is a life that Christ died for, that He desires to
be baptized and have life in Him. This is part of the “40 Days of

“For the Christian, the crucifixion is the center, the event that
gives voice to a broken, dark, and dying world, and the paradoxical
suggestion of life somehow within it. This is why the church
calendar sets apart forty days to prepare for the cross. This is
why the church marks steeples and graves in memory of the
crucifixion. The death of Christ is the occasion that makes way for
the guilty to be pardoned, and life restored.”
