Registered Apprenticeship has longbeen known in the United States as agn at training option for workers look-ing to learn a new skill and become anexpert-level craftsperson in their trade. Beit traditional industries or those that areonly now becoming better known, the ap-
prenticeship model has long beeti a partof the training strategies employers in theLInited States have relied on to preparetheir workforce. Increasingly, this modeloffers workers a head start on their way toa lifelong career.
Entry into a Registered Apprentice-ship program to support or directly followcompletion of a CTE discipline is a greatway for a worker to expand the array of"tools in their bag." Entrance into a Reg-istered Apprenticeship program, coupledwith graduation from a CTE program,has the potential to offer workers one ofthe best chances to enter a new career,learn new skills and provide an opportu-nity to see their wages grow as their skillsincrease.
Many people still only think of Regis-tered Apprenticeship as an opportunitylor young men who do not plan to attendcollege to learn new skills and enter atrade. 50,000 New Apprenticesin the Last Six MonthsOver the last six months, a time main
experts say was one ol the worst in terms
of job creation, the National Apprentice-
ship system still registered more than
50,000 new apprentices (v\ ith a])proxi-
mateh- 100,000 registered in the last
year). Remember that Registered
Apprenticeship is an "earn while you
learn" model that combines employmeni

nical instrtictioii. .So that's 50,000 jobs!
That's 50,000 jobs in a down economy.
That's an average of nearly 1,000 jobs per
state dtiring a tiiiic when hiring has been
slow and job o])p()rttinities have beeti
scarce. The tuimber of new apprentices
registered over the ])ast lew years has
averaged approximately 100,000, and
reached as high as 200,000 as reeently as
2007. And these are not just temporary
jobs. These are well-paying, snslainabic
careers for workers that meet em|:)l()\ers'
needs for highly skilled, highly moti\ ated
and well-trained employees,
