What happens during confirmation? Match up the event with the reason.

Event ReasonConfirmation happens during mass, after the Gospel and Bishop’s homily (which explains why confirmation is important).

To show the descent of the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The candidate renew their baptismal vows.

This is the point at which the candidate is confirmed and receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Bishop then lays his hands over the candidate, praying.

This helps to make the congregation a part of what is happening

The candidate kneels before the Bishop. The sponsor puts his right hand on the shoulder of the candidate.

To show that believing in the Christian faith, and being part of the Church is the candidate’s own choice.

The bishop anoints the candidates forehead with the oil of Chrism, using the sign of the cross and saying, “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

This shows the gift of peace that Christ brings.

The Bishop says “peace be with you.” The candidate replies, “and also with you”.

This shows that the confirmed will have the support of a mentor.
