    Why IHE Eye Care?

For the Clinician Using the work already done by IHE Eye Care means you get all the clinicalinformation you need when you need it, where you need it, accurately integrated into a single system, suchas your electronic health record system. Encourage your administrator to leverage IHE to save you time andresources by factoring in IHE connectivity (as evidenced by an IHE integration statement and a DICOMconformance statement) in your decisions to purchase or upgrade equipment.

For the Practice Administrator Using the work already done by IHE Eye Care means improvedworkflow in the office. It means minimizing patient identification errors, and reducing billing cycles. You wontworry about archiving images or entering patient name for each instrument the work is done. RequestIHE connectivity (an IHE integration statement and a DICOM conformance statement) in every purchasecontract or equipment upgrade.

For the IT Staff Get out of the infinite interface development cycle for every type of instrument. Using thework already done by IHE Eye Care means software upgrades will not break interfaces. Interfacespecifications are already written, and vendor-to-vendor testing is done. Ask for IHE connectivity (an IHEintegration statement) in every contract.

    What is IHE?

Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise is a professional collaboration of medical societies, clinicians andvendors. IHE was organized to find practical solutions to the complex issues of clinical system integration.

IHE does not develop standards. IHE promotes open standards such as DICOM, HL7 and Webtechnologies. IHE refines interface specifications using these open standards, rigorously tests vendorimplementations, and promotes their use through Scientific Session demonstrations and education.

IHE accelerates the adoption of the Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR), which also enables sharing ofclinical data between the hospital(s), offices and clinics. This cross-location sharing of data is important inophthalmology multi-practice settings.

All of this is done at no charge to you, the end user. J ust ask for IHE from your vendors (as evidenced by anIHE Integration Statement)!

    Where is IHE now?

Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) is a multi-year, international effort sponsored by the AmericanAcademy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the HealthcareInformation and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). There are now eight domains in IHE, only oneof which is ophthalmology. In other words, IHE is integrating all of a patients clinical information, not just thepatients eye history.

IHE Eye Care has rapidly gained momentum in Eye Care, under the sponsorship of the AAO. The IHE Year1 Showcase at the AAO 2006 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas was very successful with a few hundred peopleattending presentations and hands-on demonstrations!

The IHE Eye Care Connectathon is a gathering of vendors conducting vendor-to-vendor testing. InOctober 2007, 12 vendors brought their products to be tested for connectivity with the other vendors in

    Chicago.

How do I learn more about IHE?It is in your best interest to leverage the work already completed by the IHE Eye Care initiative, and to helpguide its future development.
