Why does rust happen?
Rust happens due to a chemical process called oxidization. Oxidation can only happen to iron or
alloys of iron by being exposed to water for periods of time. The hydrogen molecules in the water
begin to weaken the bonds of the metal itself. This is done by the hydrogen molecules mixing with
the iron molecules causing an appearance of rust. When rust is present there is no longer metal there,
and if let alone long enough, the metal can deteriorate completely. There are four stages of rust and
three main colors of rust. Color does not show the intensity of rust.
Rust has three main colors:
Red
Black/brown
Yellow
These do not show intensity.
Red Rust Means: Iron Oxidizing
Black//Brown Means: Iron Oxidizing
Yellow Rust Means: Iron Oxidizing
Levels of Rust
1. Any color of rust will appear (Red, Black, Brown, or Yellow), however this does
not signify the intensity of the situation. Base metal is usable.
2. This is when rust begins to become powder like and can be wiped off easily.
Base metal is usable.
3. May look similar in stage two however, small pin holes or major etching may
begin to appear.
4. This is where the rust begins to develop in the metal and the metal is no longer
usable.
