WELCOME TO ST THOMAS MORE COLLEGE

We’re a residential college with 400 rooms, but once you arrive on campus, you’ll see we’re a little bit different. We’re a big college, but with a tight knit community. It feels more like a family here.

Our students come from rural and metro Western Australia, interstate and across the globe with a shared vision. To work hard and achieve our wildest dreams. To live life to its fullest and make a change in this world. And our friendly and caring staff are here to support you in doing just that.

We provide your meals, clean your room and assist you with your studies, so you can focus on what matters – your studies and a fulfilling and memorable university experience.

And once you’ve settled into college, we’ll help foster a growing sense of independence and pride, with personal development, leadership and employment opportunities, as well as an exciting recreational calendar.

We look forward to showing you around our campus and hope to welcome you to Tommy in the future, a place where learning is about more than lectures.

With best wishes for your endeavours now and in the future.

With our delicious dining options, spacious grounds and on-site amenities, you’ll have more time to live, while we look after everything else.

I came to Tommy More because it’s conveniently located and close to University. Tommy also has very well-appointed and modern rooms. I was initially worried about getting engaged in the College community, such as getting used to the lifestyle and making friends with domestic students. However, the people at Tommy were friendly to international students and cared about every resident so I didn’t need to worry at all. Also Tommy More has the one and only College gym. I love getting involved with the Aussie college lifestyle while also keeping my own vibe. Come join us if you wanna live a (much) better life in Aussie!

play moreOur Body is a Temple. We love Sport.

But it isn’t about winning, it’s about camaraderie and spirit. It’s about cheering on your team mates, and getting involved. Our students have the opportunity to participate in a range of sporting teams from football to ultimate frisbee, within inter-college competitions, and friendly inter-wing College activities. There’s something for everyone.

With a dedicated Health and Wellbeing Resident Advisor, the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of our residents is a core part of Tommy life.

Our Head and Deputy Head of College live on campus with their families, and together with our team of Resident Advisors, are here to help you settle into college life and provide pastoral care 24/7.

Our residents come from many faith backgrounds, but spiritual guidance is also never far away, with regular Student Mass evenings and the support of our Campus Chaplain.

When I visited on Open Day I felt instantly at home. Everyone was so welcoming, and the vibe of the College made me feel as though I would fit in perfectly here.

The great culture and facilities you see on tours and Open Day is exactly what you get. The people are what makes Tommy special. Everyone is so accepting and welcoming, there’s always somebody around to have a chat with in the common areas. The staff are super supportive and want you to get the best out of your residential stay.

laugh moreAt Tommy, you’ll make friends for life.

There is a special bond between friends who have lived at college together, and at Tommy, we believe in respect, inclusiveness and celebrating diversity.

We believe that everyone matters. Joining our community begins at Orientation Week and extends throughout your time at the College, where you’ll be welcomed with open arms to our vibrant recreational calendar of events from movie nights to river cruises, formal dinners to intimate receptions.

St Thomas More College fosters leadership opportunities and student connection through a Student Club Committee, who are elected by the students and, with the support of St Thomas More College, co-ordinate the social calendar for our students.

Laughter, connection and camaraderie is never far away at Tommy.

I stayed here for a short amount of time in Year 12 for an ATAR Revision course and it seemed like a really convenient place to stay. After comparing all the colleges, Tommy was the most worthwhile taking all expenses into account. It was a much larger community than I’d expected and I had no idea of what college was before coming here, all I knew was that I’d be living in a room and see some people in the dining hall every day. I had no idea I’d make this many long lasting friends and connections. If you’re thinking of coming to college, just do it! It’s by far one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Living right next door to your best friend is a dream we all have as a kid, imagine a whole college full of friends!

connect moreOscar Romero challenged us with these words: “Aspire not to have more, but to be more.”

Tommy More Outreach is all about giving of ourselves to others....in order to become more ourselves.

Our students are challenged to develop a sense of justice and social concern. Through the Tommy More Outreach Program, the College seeks to foster a passion for truth and justice, and nurture each student’s compassion and love for their fellow human beings, especially those for whom life has presented many obstacles.

The Tommy More Outreach Program seeks to engage members of the College community in meaningful service experiences which challenge and teach them to be agents of social change, committed to the creation of a just and compassionate world.

The opportunities to get involved are diverse. In addition to blood donation drives, the Shave for a Cure, volunteer work at the Ronald McDonald House and fundraising for breast cancer, our students undertake fundraising and an annual (self-funded) trip to Cambodia to work with the Arrupe Centre and Lidy House, to help rural children there to receive an education.

Your connection to the greater good and our wide world begins here.

Moving to Tommy was an easy decision for me once I realised it was nothing like boarding school. I came to Tommy as I thought it would be easier than moving out of home yet I would have enough independence from my parents to call myself an adult. My favourite part of Tommy is the huge sense of community and belonging that I have here. There is always someone looking out for you and if you ever need help there will always be someone there for you. The second you step foot in the quad in your fresher shirt you know you’re now a part of something that’s pretty special and there is definitely not many other things that are like it.

be moreAt Tommy, you won’t change, you’ll grow.

St Thomas More College offers students a number of leadership and employment opportunities on campus.

This includes the Student Club, a student-run body within the College, charged with organising a number of events for students each year, as well as providing a useful means of communication and dialogue between the College and its students. It is also responsible for organising our annual participation in various Inter-College functions and events, such as the Inter-College Ball, and the NICH and WICSA sporting competitions.

Resident Advisors are appointed by the Head and Deputy Head of College and provide a safe and nurturing point of connection for the students under their care. They take an active interest in all aspects of student wellbeing, including academic, spiritual, sporting and cultural support.

Success takes determination, hard work, and the right guidance. Our Preparation for Work Series, Leadership Development Program, Graduate Association and alumni mentoring and networking opportunities are here to help you become real-world ready.

Get prepared for some serious spiritual, personal and professional development.

Moving to the big city was a daunting prospect for a 17 year old kid fresh out of school. I wanted to make the transition as seamless as possible (in other words I didn’t know how to cook) so living at a residential college was my first choice. I did my research and was impressed by the new, world class facilities Tommy had and its strong sporting culture. I was surprised by the amount of students that went to other universities as well, which opened up the opportunity to carpool. Whether it’s meeting new people in the dining hall, kicking the footy on the quad, studying hard in one of the learning centres, or relaxing in the rec room, Tommy has something for everyone.

learn moreYour lectures are just the beginning

We are here to help you succeed. To help you get the very most out of your college experience and provide the tools you need to launch a successful and fulfilling career.

Your room comes complete with a study desk and enough shelf space to satisfy even a medical student, as well as unlimited internet access.

Of course, we also know that there will be plenty of times when your own four walls will be the last thing you want to look at as you struggle with that particularly annoying essay question. We have several dedicated Academic Learning Centres that cater for independent or group study sessions.

And if you want fresh air while you work, we often see students - alone or in small groups - sitting out on the lawn or in the Piazza during the better weather, laptops and textbooks spread before them.

Need some extra help? We’ve got you covered. Our College provides complimentary group sessions or one-on-one tutoring for students seeking additional guidance and our experienced staff have worked alongside university administration for many years, which means we can help with the ins and outs of dealing with schools and faculties.

Initially I came to Tommy for the convenience of living close to campus but boy, oh boy did I get more than I bargained for. Between the friends I have made, growth as an individual and the overall supportive community filled with like-minded people, I couldn’t recommend Tommy enough.

What separates Tommy from the other colleges is the people. Cliché? Yeah. But I can guarantee after one year you’ll be saying the exact same thing.

FAQsDo you need to attend University of Western Australia to live at Tommy? No, you can be studying at any of the five universities in Perth. St Thomas More College has a bus stop directly outside the doors that offers convenient transport, and when you arrive, often one of our friendly students attending that university, will take you under their wing and share their travel tips with you.

Do I have to be a Catholic to stay at St Thomas More College? No. We have students from a number of different faiths and backgrounds residing here each year.

That said, our Catholic values are at the heart of everything that we do, and we have a supportive and thriving community at St Thomas More.

Mass is celebrated in beautiful surroundings, lit by stained glass windows imported from Ireland when the College was founded in the 1950s. There is no compulsion on students to attend Mass at any stage, although many choose to attend on a Sunday evening. On occasion residents are offered an opportunity to participate in a retreat or reflection day. This is an opportunity for residents to come away from the stresses and tensions of university life, and to spend some time together reflecting on their life journey and their relationship with God. This experience is open to students of all faith traditions and the opportunity for respectful sharing of perspectives is always facilitated.

How do I apply for Tommy More?Applying for Tommy is easy and our friendly staff can assist you at each step. To begin your application, you simply need to complete the online form at the UWA Residential Colleges Central Applications Portal and select St Thomas More College as your first preference. Once you have registered, and paid the small application fee for UWA, our admissions team will contact you to assist you with the next step. A detailed application process is listed on our website.

Who do I contact for help with my application? For assistance regarding the UWA Residential Colleges Applications portal, contact the UWA Residential Colleges Admissions Officer on +61 8 9488 0920, or email [email protected].

If you would like to know more about Tommy More, you can send us an email at [email protected] and we’d be happy to help.

How are applications processed? At St Thomas More College, priority is given to students intending to apply for a full-time, full year course at UWA, although applications from students attending all five Perth universities, as well as technical colleges such as TAFE, with a view to attend university are certainly welcomed. The College does accept a limited number of single Semester enrolments, but these are reserved for exchange and study abroad students as well as current residents who will be graduating mid-year.

Do you offer scholarships and bursaries?Yes, we do! Each year, St Thomas More College provides a number of scholarships and bursaries, however, these are offered to students who have already applied to attend the College, and awarded at the beginning of Semester 1, so please don’t hold off your application until you hear news of our scholarships.

Our College is also committed to ensuring we provide all students with the best possible rates at the most affordable price, and hence, rather than just reward the gifted and talented students, we aim to spread the load across all our residents.

What is the ratio of students at St Thomas More College? Our College has an even ratio of male to female students, and a 60: 40 ratio of domestic to international students.

Can I visit the College to take a look around?Yes, we would love to welcome you for a tour. Our friendly staff will be happy to show you around the grounds, and let you see a selection of rooms (subject to availability). Prospective residents and their parents are asked to telephone ahead, where possible, to allow us to identify suitable rooms.

Is there an advantage to applying early to St Thomas More College?Yes! Don’t leave it until you have your UWA (or other university) offer before you contact us, as most of our places will have been filled by then.

Get in early, and we may make you a conditional offer, guaranteeing you a place if you accept an offer from your university of choice. Applications are generally accepted through the UWA Residential Colleges Application Portal 12 months in advance, which is when we recommend you apply.

If for any reason you do not become a full-time student at a university in Perth, we will reimburse your non-refundable deposit of $1,000 that secures your room (and comes off your total cost on arrival).

Is living in College more expensive than living out?We don’t think so, and we believe that attending College offers so much more than just convenience, amenities and affordable living.

What price can you put on living in the heart of Perth? What price can you put on the leadership and personal development opportunities College affords, the delicious food and worry-free lifestyle, academic support and lifelong friendships you’ll make? We think those things are priceless and encourage you to consider the true benefits of College life outside just finances.

Does St Thomas More College have a curfew? No. Students are free to come and go as they please. The only condition is that residents are respectful of others on campus and in neighbouring colleges as they come and go.

Page 23: why choose tommy?

Do I have to pay extra to receive tutorial assistance? No, the College will arrange appropriate tutorial assistance for students who require it free of charge. Students who think they would benefit from assistance in any particular subject should contact the Deputy Head of College, who will make appropriate arrangements.

What is NRAS?The National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) is a partnership between the Australian Government and the states and territories to invest in affordable rental housing.

The Scheme seeks to address the shortage of affordable rental housing for low and moderate income households.

It does this by ensuring that NRAS accommodation is rented out at a rate that is at least 20 per cent below the market value. St Thomas More College has 245 NRAS apartments available. The Scheme has a number of terms and conditions relating to admission and eligibility that St Thomas More College must adhere to.

Visit our website to learn more about whether you are eligible for NRAS accommodation at Tommy.

I’m thinking of taking a Gap Year. What should I do?Students considering taking a gap year should apply as if they were entering university in the coming academic year. If you receive an offer and then decide to accept the offer but defer in order to take the gap year, your position for the following year will be secure and you do not need to pay until the year before you attend.
