ARE YOU READY FOR COLLEGE?

• Can I problem solve?

• Am I self-motivated?

• Do I have clear goals?

• Am I willing to make sacrifices in order to achieve my goals? That means giving up some of my extracurricular and free time to work on studies.

• Do I have good study habits?

• Do I have a good work ethic, get to school on time, turn in assignments, and try my best?

Students, if you find yourself saying

no to most of these questions, spend your high school years working on these important life skills.

Parents, if your son or daughter is not

ready, allow them the opportunity to mature while still in high school.

Page 12: WHY CHOOSE NCTC FOR DUAL CREDIT? · Career/Technical Coordinator-Lewisville Dr. Larry Gilbert Susan Cooper Debbie Endres Diane Mannion Danelle Wolf Patty Barrera lgilbert@nctc.edu

Talk with your child regarding the responsibilities of dual credit: school deadlines, financial investment and priorities.

Allow your child to take ownership for success and responsibility for failures.

Success will depend on their self-motivation, discipline, organizational skills, study habits, and time management. Encourage your child to develop these important skills .

Grit is a good indicator of success. Don’t let your child give up when faced with challenges.

Support and encourage students to become independent and to advocate for themselves. Don’t run to rescue them.

Encourage them to establish open communication with their instructors. If they are experiencing challenges in a course, the student will need to contact their instructor.

What is Expected of Parents?
