92/SCHOOL RECORD 2019 93/SCHOOL RECORD 2019 WHS RUGBY The Whanganui High School Rugby teams have performed very well this year with the 1st XV defending the swamp by winning every game at home, with the exception of one draw during the regular season! With a young team consisting of only four Year 13’s and a seemingly rough start to their season, they still managed to finish 3rd in the Manawatu Premier 2 competition. During the Queen’s Birthday weekend they also played for the Carlos Spencer trophy against Oslow College and finished with an impressive result 53-15 win. Whanganui High School had the pleasure of attending a few exchanges throughout the year where our 1st XV and many other sports teams competed against schools outside of the Whanganui District. To start off the winter exchanges against Hutt Valley where the 1st XV, unfortunately, lost with a close score of 22-17. During Central 6, the 1st XV came runners up to the competition, losing a close final to Hawera High School. The girls’ rugby team also had an awesome season with a stellar overall result coming 1st in the Wanganui Competition in a game against Cullinane College where they won by a healthy margin of 43-29. They also had a day where they played a few games at Ruapehu College that included schools such as Cullinane College, City College and Ruapehu College and won all three! The U15 boys also had an awesome season with a few school exchanges and tournaments along with their regular season, which they fought hard in a tough finals loss to Cullinane. However, they sought redemption and secured a 1st place win at Central Six and came home with the trophy. They also won their game at the Hawera High School exchange with a score of 26-17. OVERALL OUR RUGBY TEAMS PLAYED AMAZINGLY THIS YEAR AND WE CAN NOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT SEASON! Softball Whanganui high school had two softball teams who represented the school at the nationals in term one. Both the boys and girls teams - the boys captained by Tyrone Pirene and Ariki Teri and the girls - captained by Hinekorangi Taitapanui and Dharma Jurgens, did successfully well whilst playing their best games that they could all produce, in the sunny Gisborne weather for the week. Both teams put in the hard yards of training themselves and pushing their bodies to the absolute limits. The boys’ team had a great last game dominating their opponents 16-1 against Fairfield college. Whilst the girls put in their best effort to finish 4th overall with a 12-2 score against Tolaga (Uawa). Both the teams represented the school with great pride and took every game as a challenge to get better for their next games. The hard sessions and trainings over the summer period while it was still warm out, really payed off, as both of the teams made an outstanding performance at the Nationals, making the school very proud, as softball is not a popular sport here at Whanganui High School. The performance these fine young athletes made really showed everyone what Whanganui High School is made of!

BASKETBALLGirls Whanganui High School’s Basketball teams this year have shown, yet again, that they are a force to be reckoned with! Some of the Whanganui High School Basketball teams had the opportunity to compete in a variety of exchanges and tournaments throughout the season. The Junior Boys and Girls travelled to Palmerston North on the 6th of August to play a mix of Manawatu High Schools where the boys placed 5th and the girls placed 2nd overall. The first of the exchanges kicked off in June with the Hutt Valley exchange where the Senior Girls had a tough loss to Hutt Valley High School. The last exchange that the basketball teams played in was against Hawera High School where the Senior Boys won their game but the Senior Girls unfortunately lost. Amongst the 8 teams that competed in the Whanganui Secondary Schools competition, 7 made the top 3 and both the Junior A Girls and the Senior Social Girls won their finals. Unfortunately, both the Senior A Boys and Girls teams fell just short in their success during their final games, providing a nail-biting finish for all who came to support. However, the final result should not overshadow the teams’ undefeated status during the regular season and how dominant they were week after week. None of this would have been possible without the support of all of our coaches who volunteered their time and effort to improve the next generation of basketballers at Whanganui High School.

Alex Nevil , Senior A Boys Captain

The Senior A Basketball Girls team have had a very strong season this year, competing in the adult league on a Thursday night and the Secondary Schools competition which is on a Friday night. The girls have worked hard throughout the season between trainings on and off the court to successfully make both finals for either competitions. Overall placing 2nd in the final for both leagues. We lose 5 strong players from our side next year - Montel Vaiao-Aki, Teagan Tapa, Dharma Jurgens, Shanice Campbell and Hinekorangi Taitapanui. We wish them the best of the luck for next year and hope to see them continue playing the game of basketball. On behalf of our Wanganui High School Girls team we would like to say a special thank you to our coach Marie Joseph for not only this year but the many years you have made our team grow over the years. Your hard work truly does not go unrecognized - you are our ‘idol’.

MARTIAL ARTS

2019 was the first year for our mixed martial arts group within WHS.Our trainings have been based around traditional Kung Fu, Sanda and grappling.

Traditional Shaolin Iron Palm Kung FuTraditional Shaolin kung fu training focuses on both internal and external development, cultivating chi and conditioning through: - Discipline of the mind- Discipline of the body- Self control

Sanda (Sanshou)Sanda is a combat sport originally developed by the Chinese military. It is a combination of full-contact kickboxing and wrestling.

GrapplingCompetitive grappling is similar to submission wrestling and draws on techniques from many martial art systems such as Chi-na, Ju-jitsu, and Judo.

MixedWHS MMA CLUB

2019We started the year with a small group of students, mostly with no prior experience, who worked very hard on basic combat concepts and fundamentals, showing great perseverance and patience. The couple of students I did have with a little more experience also stepped up within the group by supporting their peers, and the instructor, by taking lead roles in the class like warm ups, stretching and breathing exercises. Our first grading was held near the end of term 2, with two of our new students grading in their first level. The students showed great heart to complete their grading, which included demonstrating traditional Kung Fu techniques, Sanda padwork, grappling exercises and sparring. Both students earned their first belt.We have another grading planned for the end of term 3 with another student testing for their first level and two students looking at moving into the Senior levels, which they have all been working very hard towards.Other upcoming events for 2019 for term 4

- Sanda tournament in Auckland (Marino Pauro, Hinekura Pauro)- No-Gi Grappling tournament in Palmerston North (Marino Pauro, Hinekura Pauro, Amelia Field)

CROSSMoto2019 was another successful and enjoyable year for Wanganui High School’s Motocross team. This year we competed in two major events which were the North Island Secondary School MX champs held in Rotorua, and the NZ Secondary School MX Cross Country which took place at Taikorea MX park, halfway between Sanson and Foxton.

In March we headed up to race on the slick clay of Rotorua, to compete in the North Island Secondary School Champs. We were faced full gates of 40 riders in most classes full of tough competition but we still managed to come away with 4th overall which we were proud of as a team. Individual results for this event in our different classes were, James Rountree - 2nd, Ajah Sullivan - 5th, Troy Bullock - 10th, Riki Wainhouse - 13th and Alex Luff-Scott - 22nd.

Later in the year at the beginning of September, we headed an hour south to race the NZ Secondary School MX cross country in the deep sand at Taikorea MX park. This was a physically demanding 90-minute race with deep sand rollers and tree roots for us to navigate our way through. With 120 riders from 33 different schools all riding around the same track, it got very rough and there was nowhere to rest. WHS came 2nd overall with individual results of:

Troy Bullock - 1st (12-16yrs 85cc),

James Rountree - 2nd (17-18yrs Open),

Logan Smith-McDougal - 7th (15-16yrs 125cc)

Riki Wainhouse - 7th

Alex Luff-Scott - 9th (14-16yrs 250cc)

Overall, we all had a great time riding for Whanganui High School this year and are happy with our results. The team is looking strong once again for next year and we encourage anyone interested in joining us to do so.

BadmintonThe 2019 Boys Badminton Team, consisting of Benjamin Brandon, Josiah Booth-Richards, Mathew Anscombe, Jack Fawthorpe, and Campbell James, were placed in Division One and were among New Zealand’s finest, where they held their own and came out 12th in New Zealand, something they were pretty happy about.

The team led by Grant Hardy represented Whanganui High School in the best way possible. Special mention to our supporters, Otis and Panina.

It has been an action packed year in Outdoor Education with over 150 students in level 1, 2 and 3 participating in a vast array of activities.

The Level 1 students have caved, tramped, mountain biked, kayaked, abseiled, rafted and completed level 2 standards in adventure based learning. The Level 2 students have completed tramping and camping, indoor rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, high ropes and a weather unit. The Level 3’s have completed overnight trips in kayaking, bush craft, rock climbing and finished with mountain biking in Rotorua and Taupo. It has been an exciting year watching the students pull their limits and extend themselves in parts of the country they may never have seen, if they had not taken Outdoor Education.

Hillary 6 Hour Adventure Race 23rd of June

This year we took one team over to Rotorua for the Hillary Outdoors Adventure race. The teams had to Problem Solve, Mountain Bike, Cross Country running and Rogaine their way round collecting points for 6 hours finishing with a 20 km Mountain Bike ride to the finish. The teams did really well and completed the massive course in some hard weather, with cold rain for the first 2 hours. This was a young team looking to gain experience for the next couple of years. Well done team.

Get 2 Go Adventure Racing Wellington - 8th of April

This year we took 8 teams up to Wellington for the Get 2 Go Regional competition. Students took part in Mountain Biking, Water transfer, Problem solving for 1 hour at each activity. They then had to complete a Rogaine (orienteering) course, which involved them navigating through parks and urban areas to find controls and complete challenges in a 2 hour time frame. The teams finished and had a smile on their faces as they crossed the finish line.

The Whanganui High School rowing squad is lucky enough to be affiliated with the AramohoWhanganui Rowing Club, which we represent at several regattas between December and February. Our first regatta as a school squad was the North Island Secondary Schools Regatta on the 8th March, located at Lake Karapiro, attending with a squad of 28 athletes competing from novice, under-15 to under-18 categories.

One of our most outstanding results was the Girls under-18 novice coxed quadruple sculls, made up of Georgina Ross, Messina Su’a, Perris Adam, Danja Grundwald, and coxswainJemma Tan. The girls placed 8th in the A-final, setting a great example of how hard theseyoung girls had worked over the winter months. The Girls under-18 coxed quadruple sculls made up of Zeah Brewer, Niamh Monk, Jaimee Bridger, Ella Dudley, and coxswain Campbell Monk gained the 4th place. Also, the 2nd under-18 girls coxed quadruple sculls made up of Rochelle Lowe, Feyth Hogan, Riley Frecklington, Mahina Barritt and coxswain Dominic Benfell, placing 6th, setting a solid pace leading up to Maadi Cup. Power double Niamh Murphy and Mikayla Manville debuted their under-17 double sculls, resulting in a 3rd place in the B final.Following on from North Island Secondary Schools, WHS took 21 athletes to the Aon MaadiCup, NZ Secondary School Championships, with many respectful results. Jaimee Bridger andNiamh Monk both competed in the Girls under-18 single sculls B-final placing 8th and 4th. Thenjoining Zeah Brewer, Ella Dudley and coxswain Campbell Monk in the Girls under-18 coxedquadruple sculls placing 8th in the country. Senior boy Jordan Manville trained and competed inhis single sculls throughout the year, finishing 2nd in the C-final for the under-16 single sculls.

This year both the senior boys and girls teams competed at the Secondary School National Competition in Palmerston North. The boys were unlucky to lose two games in their pool play which meant they were placed in division four. They went through the rest of the tournament without losing a game and so ended up winning division four and bringing home a gold medal. This was the best result Whanganui High School has had for a number of years at Volleyball Nationals and a big thank you needs to go out to their coach Iliesa Tamaniyaga who has coached the boys for the last three years and built up a very strong team unit with great fellowship. Thanks also to Pac’n’save for their sponsorship of the team. Captain Josefa Tamaniyaga, Archie Smith and Isaak Pohio are all Year 13 students who have played for the team for the last three years, so they will be sorely missed next year. Their experience really shone through at this tournament, along with that of Jordyn Leiasamaivao-Turvey, who is just in Year 11, so has another couple of years with the team. Two International students, Koki Yamamoto and Nicklas Schneider, were great additions to the team this year, as were Noah Payne and Seth Grant, who had their first Nationals tournament, but will unfortunately be leaving at the end of the year. Jordyn will be the most experienced player left and Michael Ross and Raymond Taitapanui will build on their experience gained this year. The girls team had a couple of good wins at the tournament and learnt a lot. It was the first National tournament for everyone, so most of the team will be returning next year, which bodes very well for 2020 Nationals. They also need to thank their coach Evan Huirua and his wife Leayne who both put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the girls were ready for this tournament. Captain Candice Clark, Maria Williams and Athena Jones-Collings will all be leaving school at the end of the year, but seven of the team will return. Lucy Bennetts, Brooke Ryland, Molly Green, Rebekah Phillips, Piper Slade, Riccaia Field and Sophia ‘Unga-Cribb. Both teams played in the Palmerston North competition in preparation for Nationals in Term One and enjoyed the competition over there.

We also had teams playing in the local competition at Jubilee stadium after school on Wednesdays. In Term One we were represented by a team of Junior boys, junior girls, a mixed team of Junior and Senior boys and girls, Senior girls, mixed Seniors and a Pacifika team. It was great to see so many students involved and participating in this competition.

VolleyBall TOUGH GAL/GUYCOMPETITION 2019On Friday the 24th of May, WHS took 28

students to the lower north island Tough Guy/

Gal competition held just out of Wellington.

There was a 6 km and 12 km course. Our

students did the 12 km course. It was a tough

course, which the students completed 2 laps

of running up hills, through rivers, muddy

swamps, up cargo nets and under electric

fences.

We finished 1st (Travis Bayler), 2nd (Karl

Loebe) in the Male 12 km, with and 1st

(Rebecca Baker) and 2nd (Renee Teers) in the

female race.

Travis Bayler defended his title again - winning

the Open Men for the third year in a row. Since

2015 as a Year 9, Travis has won his age group

and since 2017 has won the event – Truely a

tough guy!

Rebecca Baker defending her title also for the

4th year. Rebecca is also yet to be beaten on

the Wellington Course – 4 years of first places

– will 2020 be the clean sweep for this amazing

young lady!

This was by far our biggest turn out – Well

done to all who took part.

AwaIn 2019, Awa House has been involved in many events, such as sport events like athletics, in which we came third, swimming sports in which we also came third and cross country - guess where we placed ... last! We also took part in other events such as “The Can Drive” in which originally we came second but then got bumped down to third, “The Battle of the Houses” in which again, we came third and The House Quiz in which we also, once again, came third. Although this was the overall result, the two teams that got first equal in the quiz (The MacDaddies & Leah and Co.) were from Awa House, just showing that we have some academics.

Athletics was one of the biggest events of the year and all of the houses put in a remarkable amount of effort, in the spirit of the day. Similarly with swimming sports and cross country, those who competed put their all into the day and made them some of the most memo-rable parts of the school year. The Battle of the Houses, in particular, brought us closer together as a house.

Another event that brought Awa together as a commu-nity was anti-bullying week, which featured a few ab-solute legends who decided to bake biscuits and give them out to people in exchange for a compliment. This is a prime example of what Awa is all about as a house, creating stronger relationships within the community. Despite our running streak of coming third, we have still managed to come out unscathed as Awa is still in the points race at the time of writing this.

As it shows, big events have not been our strong point, but what has is our commitment to school and dedica-tion to keeping up our L.I.F.E points, which have helped us to work our way up overall.

MaungaThis year has been a very big year for the house system at Whanganui High School, and

we as Maunga House have shown that we can stand as a united front and compete with

the rest. Throughout the year there have been a number of events that Maunga House,

as well as the other three houses, have participated in. This includes sporting events

such as the WHS Swimming Competition, where we came 2nd overall and the Athletics

Day at Cooks Gardens, where we came 4th. Although we didn’t get the top spot on the

day we still came to compete with Rebecca Baker, Head Girl and Maunga house student,

setting a new 1500m, 3000m, and the 2km steeplechase senior girls’ record on Athletics

Day!

Maunga house also participated in the nationwide Anti-Bullying week, that consisted

of each house organising an event that showed Whanganui High School as a caring

and loving school. As a house, we decided to form a heart on the field using students

and pink pieces of paper that would be captured on camera by a drone. However, due

to technical difficulties on the day we compromised and took a photo of a large group

of students holding up their pieces of pink paper, showing that even when things don’t

always go our way, we can always find a way to turn it around and turn it into a positive

situation.

We also competed in the second annual House Quiz and had a total of 25 teams sign up

for the day, making the presence of Maunga house felt throughout the Jubilee stadium.

Although we did not walk away with the trophy, we still had a lot of fun with the engag-

ing questions and the interactive mini-games throughout.

Mid-way through Term 2 is where we really outshone the rest and showed everyone that

we have the talent in our house to be able to do big things. On the 19th and 20th June

this year, the Performing Arts Concert was held at the Whanganui Opera House and had

students involved in bands, solo performances, and group dance pieces performing on

stage. In addition to this was the integration of the Battle of the Houses performance,

which had a group of students from each house perform a student-led piece based

around the theme of unity. With the help of our Maunga prefect group, we were able

to organise the choreography and vision for our performance and we immediately set

out to get it done. For our performance, we used the theme of unity by dressing up

as soldiers that were going to war and singing old war songs that were sung to bring

everyone together as we were marching around the stage. Then we were caught in

crossfire and fell to the ground. When the music changed, we all came back together

to sing the final song. When it was time to announce the winner Maunga House were

deemed to be the winners overall!

This year really has been a big year for the house system, with the development of the

role of the house leaders and tons of new events. From us, the Maunga House leaders,

we would like to say that we have had an awesome year building the job from scratch

and taking on the challenges that came with it. We are both very excited to see this

new system flourish and are very proud to be the first Maunga House leaders at High

School. A big thank you to Mr. Marr, Mrs. Buchart-Smyth, and Mr. Leonard for all of their

help this year, we couldn’t have done it without you and a bigger thank you to Maunga

House overall for the awesome participation and hard work this year.

WE ARE, WE ARE MAUNGA!

This year has been an exciting time for Moana House, with inter house competitions ranging from the stage to the sports field. One of our most successful and fun filled events of the school year is the Athletics day held at Cooks Garden. This highly competitive house event started off a bit wet in the early hours of the day, but this didn’t stop us. Throughout the day students became more involved with the non-athletic events that surrounded the venue, some of these included gumboot throwing, tire flipping, netball shooting skills and more, piling in points for our house. But these weren’t the only events we excelled at with multiple 1st, 2nd and 3rds throughout track and field events that was pushing Moana closer to the top. With all students coming together displaying our LIFE values and uniting with a common goal of beating all other houses Moana emerged victorious. With the Athletics day under our belt and multiple people dressed up in their yellow costumes I think it’s fair to say this was the best, most successful and most fun day of our houses year.

The most intensive house event we had was the Battle of the Houses. The effort everyone put in was wonderful, and it was interesting to see the different ways each house went about portraying the theme of unity. We chose a retelling of the film Toy Story, which lead to many busy rehearsals learning lyrics, dances, and organising costumes. On the night we found ourselves dressed as sheep, cowboys, and aliens on stage, where we danced our hearts out. While we didn’t quite get the result we were hoping for, it was exciting to be part of this brand new tradition and meet everyone, making well worth the effort we put in. I am really looking forward to seeing how this show progresses in future years!

For anti-bullying week we again took to centre court with buckets of chalk and pink sweets to encourage Moana house and the rest of Whanganui High School to help us create a visible stand against bullying. It was really encouraging to see how dedicated everyone was to the anti bullying message, and how everybody had their own take on how to convey the message. The result of this was wonderful art and positive messages stretching through the middle of our school, making a lovely end to the week.

House quiz! The house quiz is one of the most anticipated events of the house competitions, as it gives all houses a fair chance to see which house has the brains of the school. Our day started off by setting up the Jubilee stadium followed by a flood of students filling up in their teams to get underway. Soon after we got on our way with the quiz, students being hit with questions left right and center with the occasional games thrown in the mix to make things interesting. The quiz was extremely well organized and everyone involved including the students participating did an awesome job, but the one thing that was on everyone’s mind was the results and as per usual Moana came out on top. With another major victory under our belt we were happy and exited the stadium after cleaning up with our heads held high.

Whenua“The Second year ,since the introduction of the new house system proved to

be successful for WHS. From connecting the seniors and juniors throughout

various events such as the Anti-bullying day, House Athletics, Battle of the

Houses and House Quiz. All these events were a great way of raising school

spirit and connecting people regardless of their differences. This has proven to

be a great way of encouraging an idea, which I believe, is extremely important

for WHS.The idea of strength in collective success. In a way that everyone

comes together to achieve their personal best.

Anti-bullying day was a cold rainy day which happened to be the perfect day

for a cozy cup of hot chocolate that was Team Whenua’s initiative to spread

positivity and smiles all around. This was to promote anti-bullying through

kindness. I believe the school can only be free of bullying if the problem is

fixed from within each individual through being kind, which is why the green

cups sponsored to us by JadCup had the quote “ in a world where you can be

anything, be kind” to encourage kindness through actions. This then flowed in

really well into the next house event which was the House Quiz, this event did

not only bring people of different year groups together, it also helped rein-

force the idea of a school being able to cater to the different fortes and inter-

ests of the students in our house, this also includes the student leader teams

in-charge of running and organising the event. This was another event that

proved to be successful for Whenua regardless of the results. The team spirit

and excitement was extremely worthwhile. The biggest event for team whenua

this year was the first ever Battle of the Houses. The team placed second but

I strongly believe we are winners at heart. I make that claim for the effort and

hard work and passion our small group put in, the spirit and the enthusiasm

was commendable. The juniors and seniors coming together to work with me

as their first house captain and the effort teachers and staff members put into

making this battle a memorable one as well as , all the special friendships and

connections I made through this event is something I would hold very close to

my heart. To my house, my team whenua and deans, thank you for being such

a pleasure to work with. I am extremely grateful for all the opportunities and

fond memories I have made and gathered due to being given this prestigious

role of the first House Captain for Team Whenua. ‘Tihei Mauriora!’ “

Arafia Khan

The house athletics was a great day for Whenua, it was our f irst major

event of the year so it was the perfect opportunity to come together

as a house and get some team spirit going. At the very start of the day

we walked around the track in our sea of green chanting along with the

other houses. This was a great way to get the house rivalry started for

the day. Throughout the day the Whenua students got involved in al l

the track and field activit ies and games around the track, this helped

gain points for our overal l total . Whenua really shone in the inter house

relays where we smashed out the competit ion winning the senior boys

relays and came second in both the senior and junior gir ls . This was a

great outcome for our house helping us come out second overal l for

house athletics only being beaten by Moana, this gave a great boost to

our total house points.
