Who is CBNCT?
Transport task overview: – 33 Vehicles consisting of:
• Mini-buses
• Passenger Vehicles
• Equates to 1 million km/annum & nearly 84,000 trips
– Supported 80 volunteers 8 paid drivers
– Personal vehicle paid = has been phased out very rare to use volunteer vehicles
– Taxi fees paid = approximately $3700.00 per month for out of hours & weekend services

Adopting a WHS approach to work driving safety
Motivation
• High Incident rate
– Across the organisation especially driving safety
– Risk posed to clients
– Needed to have everyone responsible for WH&S
• Poor condition of vehicles mainly volunteers owned
• Volunteers are professionals – we want to attract and retain the best and most committed
• No system wide Safety approach, was left up to the driver in a lot of cases

• Establish WHS Committee with responsibility and must deliver outcomes– Link to CEO and Board
• Whole of system approach– Involves all stakeholders not just drivers

– Regular assessments

Key lessons
• Creating the right culture is crucial
• Involve all staff and volunteers in owning safe work
practices
• Be open to ideas and input from volunteers and staff and
be prepared to embrace worthy changes
• Hazard identification can be right under your nose but
not seen and only comes to light when an outsider
notices. Take the time to listen
