    Grade 5

Course name: Whole numbers and Division.

    Level 1.

    Session 2.Equations.

Numeric expression: Is an expression with numbers.Example: 45 + 34

    Numeric equation: Is a numeric expression equated to zero.Example: 45 - 45 = 0

Algebraic expression: Is an expression that contains both numeric and unknownvariables.

    Example: x - 5

Algebraic equation: Is an algebraic expression equated to zero. Here you cansolve for the variable.

    Example: x - 5 = 0x - 5 + 5 = 0 + 5

    Therefore x = 5

The following are the points to remember while solving an algebraic equation :

    1. We can add/subtract the same number to/from both sides of an equation.2. We can multiply/divide the same number to/by both sides of an equation.3. We can transfer the terms from one side to the other side after changing their

    signs.

    Example: 2x - 5 = 31

    Step 1: Adding 5 both sides 2x - 5 + 5 = 31 + 5

Therefore, 2x = 36Step 2: Dividing both sides of the equation by 2 we get

    x/2 = 36/2Therefore, x = 18
