School PoliciesThere are several policies in the school which affect every classroom. For these rules and policies, remember the following:

If it’s a rule in the school, it will be followed here. No exceptions. No whining.

School UniformStudents are required to wear black or white (maroon for seniors only) collared shirts with a white undershirt. There are NO logos on shirts.

Pants or skirts can be black, navy blue, or khaki. No jeans, sweatpants, or pajamas allowed. Shorts or skirts cannot be above the knee.

Shoes are to have a strap on the back at least and be no higher than 1½” high. Shoes may be any color.

Jackets are solid white, black, navy blue, khaki, OR maroon with NO logos. They cannot be combinations of colors.

Kingsbury gear can be used in place of the uniform.

Backpacks are not carried around the school and are not allowed in the classroom. Please place them in your locker or leave them in the hall. Purses bigger than 1 sq. ft. will be treated as backpacks.

If you are out of uniform in any way, you will be asked to call home to get it fixed. If it is a continual problem, a suspension can occur.

AttendanceClass starts immediately when the bell rings; you are expected to be in your seat ready to begin. Tardies and absences quickly destroy your grade and must be discussed immediately.

Keeping Up With the LanguageOne of the most important things about learning a language is connecting with vocabulary in a way that makes it stick in your head. Because of this, taking notes is an important skill, but in Spanish class, it will look a lot different than anywhere else!

Your NotebookYour notebook is for Spanish ONLY. You can keep it in the classroom or take it home, just remember it must come to class every day. You should also keep a binder for any handouts and papers, but it does not have to come to class daily.

Doodles as NotesMost people just copy down what they see on the board. However, that’s not always the best way. Instead, in Spanish class, we need our notes to demonstrate our understanding of words and ideas.

In order to do this, we will work on a special form of note taking. BrainDoodles are picture notes that demonstrate your own thoughts about the information using mini pictures or doodles, along with some words and color. We will learn how to do these in class. The important things to know about BrainDoodles is they do not require you to be an artist and your doodles do not have to look the same as anyone else’s.

If you prefer to take traditional notes, remember that English should NOT be visible in your book, meaning that you’ll have to make some flaps for covering. We will show you how to do this in class as well.

Welcome to Spanish! What to Expect from Spanish Class

In Spanish class, we will learn the basics of language: how to read, write, speak, and listen in Spanish. We will learn how to introduce yourself and how to have conversation about your family, school, activities, and food. Just remember that learning a language is not easy so if you have trouble, that’s okay. The more you practice, the more you will understand.

In The Classroom

Classroom ExpectationsSpanish class is taught in…Spanish! This can be scary to many students, but if you are in class every day and participate, you will be fine. In fact, students who participate faithfully in the class generally move 2 proficiency levels more than those who don’t. The following rules will help you succeed.

Force yourself to speak only Spanish in class, from the time you walk in to the time you leave—it’s hard, but you can do it!

Ask questions! Contact us as soon as you need help; DON’T wait until you’re

failing! Meet all deadlines—late work may not be accepted and will

KILL your grade! If you have a problem, let us know BEFORE something is due.

Participate with the class; if we’re doing it, you’re doing it too! Bring all necessary supplies. Respect others by keeping your hands, feet, objects, and non-

classroom language to yourself. Save personal issues (including grooming) for the hallway.

Commitment: Either you do or you don’t, there is no in between.

Hall Passes You will receive 2 passes at the beginning of the quarter.

Each pass is worth 1 homework letter grade if saved until the end of the quarter.

Extra passes can be purchased using classroom pesos ONLY.

TodaysMeetOn classwork days, or during some lessons, we will open a TodaysMeet page. This is a place where you can post questions and answers for us to see and help your group without interrupting the class. Always sign in with your name so you can get credit! Good questions and helpful answers can earn extra points on your ClassDojo and writing in Spanish ALWAYS earns points.

VokiVoki allows you to record your voice and connect it with an avatar on the computer. It’s a great way to make a presentation or demonstrate your speaking abilities. We will give you a code and password so make sure you keep up with these as well.

EmailEvery student needs their own personal, professional email address. If you don’t have one, you can get one for free from Gmail. As soon as you have one, email Señor Garcia and Señora Clark with your name and class period. Your subject should say Hello from [Your Name]. We will contact you through this account.

*Remember, Kingsbury has a no-electronics policy—if your device is being used for something other than work in the classroom, it will be confiscated for 24 hours. No exceptions.

Computer and Phone AccessYou will need to find access to the internet during class and after school for homework. If you don’t have ANY way to get online, you can come use the computer during tutoring time.

FreshGradeYou will need to access your FreshGrade account. We will give you your access codes; log on as soon as possible. There is an app for students and you will use this a lot, so save it! SAVE YOUR CODE in a safe place; it will cost you to get it again.

DuoLingoHomework will be completed through DuoLingo. You will receive an email with a code to sign in; get this done quickly so you don’t get behind! Save the app and keep track of your email and password. Remember to practice daily for extra streak and XP rewards!

ClassDojo Class points, participation, and attendance

will all be kept in ClassDojo. You and you parent will receive an invitation to connect; you can get the app and create your own avatar. As you enter the classroom, find your monster and sign into class. If you do not sign in, you cannot earn any points that day.

How Grades Work

ProficiencyProficiency is what you can do with language outside of the classroom. Our goal is to prepare you for the real world, without textbooks and dictionaries. In order to do that, our grading system is set up to show how well you can use Spanish.

Grade PercentagesEach person’s grade is calculated each unit by proficiency, homework, participation, classwork, and a quarter test. The percentages are as follows:

950 total grade points are available each quarter, which students must keep written down on their tracker.

Grades are divided by:

A. 883-950 pts.B. 807-882 pts.C. 712-806 pts.D. 665-711 pts.F. 0-664 pts.

Classroom Procedures

Arrival and DismissalYou are expected to be in class, in your seat when the class is schedule to begin. For example, 1st period begins at 7:30. Use the ClassDojo to mark your attendance as you enter. We will begin work at 7:30. You are considered late if you arrive after the clock marks 7:31. After your second tardy, we will contact your parents for assistance. After your third tardy, we will refer you to the office.

When it is time to leave the classroom, remain in your seat and wait until you are dismissed by us. Do not get up or leave at the bell or you will delay dismissal.

Sitting at Your TableYou will always have an assigned table; these groups will be changed periodically by us. Always sit at your table and ask permission before leaving it. If we have to address this more than once, we will ask your parent to come meet with us.

Each table will choose a Spanish-speaking country to represent themselves. Get to know your table mates names and work with them as this will help earn points and pesos for your team. Learning and sharing new things about your country can also earn you points, so be prepared!

Class WorkThroughout the year, we will have days specifically for completing class work. During these days, your group will have a chart of all assignments that need to be completed. Some assignments can be completed as a whole group, others are individual or partner practice. Every assignment should be put onto each person’s FreshGrade account to receive a grade. All work should be done in Spanish to the best of your ability as it will help move your proficiency level! We will move around the room to help you as you work and take participation points. As you work, questions can be posted on TodaysMeet so we can help everyone as quickly as possible.

Classroom Procedures, cont.

PE$O$Everybody likes money, right?! In Spanish class, we have pesos which are valuable for spending at the class tienda. Of course, since it’s a Spanish store, you can’t speak English while you’re there, but you can purchase things like:

Paper Pencils (with Spanish writing!) Erasers and Sharpeners Notebooks Candy Chips Capri Sun Passes for homework, classwork, quizzes and more!

Pesos are earned by getting points on your ClassDojo, speaking in Spanish instead of English, completing tasks well, winning classroom competitions, working as a team, and more.

Unfortunately, pesos can also be lost. Should you choose to behave poorly in the classroom, you will have to pay a fine. Pay up quickly and without fuss or the fine doubles!

Turning in WorkThere are several different ways in which work will be turned in, but most things will be submitted online. All assignments must be submitted by the end of the school day on which they are due (i.e. 2:15pm), Once we leave the building, they are considered late. Late work is not acceptable! Turn in your work on time or EARLY if you will be absent!

Use of Online Dictionaries and TranslatorsWhile Google Translate and other online methods are easy to use, they are not the best resources for learning language. We do NOT allow the use of these sites on assignments. You may use www.spanishdict.com if you need a dictionary; make sure you only type in ONE WORD at a time for the best results!
