WHO WE AREOur coaching staff consists of highly experienced baseball and softball personnel, including several former professional players. We specialize in fundamental instruction by way of open workouts. Our workouts give members practical and theoretical training in the fundamentals of the game, while our educational component aids students in the classroom. We believe the skills learned in baseball and softball can be applied beyond the fi eld, helping to shape a better community. As players progress in their development, we are committed to providing them chances to perform for collegiate coaches and professional scouts in the hopes of facilitating advanced playing opportunities.

THE FACILITYThe MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, Calif., is part of MLB’s Urban Youth Initiative. Encompassing more than 20 acres on the campus of El Camino College Compton Center, the state-of-the-art Academy features: four fi elds, including a show fi eld complete with scoreboard, grandstand seating, dugouts and lights; an auxiliary fi eld; a softball fi eld; a youth fi eld; and a 12,000-square-foot clubhouse with a weight room, locker room and other training facilities, plus batting cages and pitching mounds.

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENTAcademy members have the opportunity to attend free educational, tutoring and counseling sessions with our staff. Assistance is given on an appointment basis.

VOCATIONAL DEVELOPMENTThe tremendous support system within Major League Baseball extends to a plethora of professional opportunities, including broadcasting, scorekeeping, fi eld maintenance, umpiring, front offi ce operations and athletic training. The Urban Youth Academy programs prepare America’s urban youth to pursue careers in these areas through classes, workshops, seminars, camps and other training sessions.

BECOME A MEMBERMembership is open to all youth ages 5-18. We strive to provide programs for players of all ability levels. To register, stop by the Academy offi ce and complete an application with a parent/guardian signature, and submit it to an Academy staff member.

We advise that all youth come prepared to work out, with proper apparel and gear, such as baseball/softball pants, socks, a belt, cleats, tennis shoes/turfs and a glove. Please communicate to a staff member upon registration if you do not have this equipment.

WHAT IS THE ACADEMY?Major League Baseball’s fi rst Urban Youth Academy was founded in 2006 in Compton, Calif., and exemplifi es MLB’s commitment to urban communities through cost-free year-round programs. As a not-for-profi t organization, the UYA aims to set the standard for baseball and softball instruction, to teach and educate in urban America, and to enhance the quality of life in the surrounding communities. The Compton location is one of several UYAs across the country. Major League Baseball has set out four facets to the Urban Youth Initiative:

• Grow the games of baseball and softball while cultivating diversity in all aspects of the game• Make meaningful contributions to the development of urban communities• Provide safe and organized recreational activities for urban youth• Prepare urban high school players for college and professional baseball and softball programs
