Architectural Salvage – the Source Posted on: May 18th, 2011by wilsonkelsey 1 Comment Last week I posted an article about Dawn and Eric’s house in Memphis, and how they so artfully displayed unique architectural fragments in their home, which gave it a special personality. Today I would like to show you some of the items I found of interest the last time I visited the same architectural salvage store that Dawn and Eric visit – South Front Antiques in Memphis, TN. You can find it at 374 South Front Street. The storefront at South Front Antiques Here’s what to look for: an old brick building, with 3 floors chocablockfull of old house parts and Etcetera! If you go, keep your eyes wide open to possibilities. I remember Front Street in my youth when it had cotton bolls blowing across the street. And in the movie, THE FIRM, from the Grisham novel, Tom Cruise jumped from a Front Street window onto bales of cotton in a truck, which kept him alive. Well, enough of that diversion. Inside the shop, one of the first things I saw were these 2 interesting lanterns. I love their spiked tops. Not very friendly to birds, but maybe that was the point? They have character. Wonderful exterior iron lanterns

Right next to them was this lovely iron log basket, in an oval shape. Now I don’t see thateveryday.

This curved top exterior door caught my attention. It is extra thick, not like modern doors. I’ll betit is over 2 inches thick. What a feel that has in your hand when you operate it! It kicks in withmultiple senses – sight and feel. But, you don’t need to think about a door to your house. Whatcomes to my mind is using this door as an entry to your brickwalledin garden, a cottage typegarden. What an entry statement! Build your wall around this door, and by the way, don’t paint itwhite! (What to paint it depends upon your environment.) And btw, the glass in this door isBeveled! A real quality touch.

Great craftsmanship in this old door

This diamond paned window reminds me so much of our annual trips to the cabin in theAdirondack Mountains of New York. All the old style cabins and Great Camps have diamondpaned windows. (I mean, Who would go without?) Most of them are painted green, to blend inwith the forest. Why don’t you create your own country camp by incorporating a window such asthis? I’m seeing bench seat below, and a wonderful view framed by the fabulous detail of adiamond paned window. And btw again, this window is shown here up on its side. It is really ahoriztonal window – which should change your perspective.

Atmospherecreating window design

South Front Antiques has much more than just old house parts, however. This old bottle collectioncaptured my attention because I am working with a couple whose husband collects old bottles.What do you think, J? I could call and ask about them. ?

A collection of old bottles

There was one piece of an old column that I picture as a wonderful pedestal with a vase offlowers. Isn’t it a beauty?
