Workshop Agenda

IUST, Tehran, Iran14th December 2016

Abstract

WORKSHOP | APPLICATIONS OF PSCAD IN POWER SYSTEMS

As power systems evolve, the need for accurate, intuitive simulation tools becomes more and more important. With PSCAD™/EMTDC™ you can build, simulate, and model your systems with ease, providing limitless possibilities in power system simulation. Included is a comprehensive library of system models ranging from simple passive elements and control functions, to electric machines and other complex devices. PSCAD™ has established itself as the most popular power system transient simulation package available today.

The objective of this workshop is to give the participants an introductory hands-on experience on PSCAD™/EMTDC™. This course covers the fundamentals applicable to the study of electromagnetic transients (EMT) in electrical networks. The concepts presented are reinforced with several PSCAD™ simulation examples. The course will highlight the new features in the latest release.

Date: 13/12/16 Duration: 0.5 day

Who should attend? This course is intended for practicing engineers, graduate students, and researchers in power systems and power electronics, who are interested in developing an in depth understanding of the modern tools available for the analysis of transient events in the network. The course is intended for existing PSCAD users as well as introductory users.

PSCAD Experience

Previous experience with the PSCAD software tool is not required. Temporary licenses will be issued for conducting the training course at IUST, Tehran, Iran.

About the instructor:

Yousef Pipelzadeh, Ph.D., DIC, is the Business Development Manager of the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre in the U.K., a division of Manitoba Hydro International. He is also an adjunct Research Fellow in Power Systems at Imperial College London.

In 2007, he obtained his Master’s Degree (MEng) in Communication Systems with 1st class (hons.), and awarded with the IEEE Communication Chapter for best departmental candidate. He was one of four selected from the U.K. on a 1-year Entrepreneurial programme (developing hi-tech start-ups) at Wesley Clover International, Kanata, Canada,In 2008, he began his PhD in Power Systems at Imperial College London, U.K., successfully publishing over 10 top-tier papers. In 2012, he continued on as Research Associate and was lead Principle Investigator on several consultancy projects through Imperial Consultants – which include EPRI (California, USA), National Grid (U.K.) and Scottish Power Energy Networks. He has spent several months at the R&D divisions at National Grid (U.K.) and Smart Grid Research Institute (China). He has supervised numerous MSc and PhD students in the area of Power System Dynamics between 2010 and 2015.In 2015, he joined Manitoba HVDC Research Centre where he is responsible for business development of MHRC’s products and services across U.K/Europe.

He is recognized and nominated by the British Standard Institute as a U.K. Principle Expert, and is an active member on the European Commission (Cenelec TC8X/WG 06) developing the guidelines and standards on HVDC Grid.

He has given numerous (over 25) talks at International events (IEEE/CIGRE/IET) across Asia, Africa, North America and Europe, which also including several invited keynote speaker. Further, he has been an invited speaker to talk on Energy investment at the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (London, U.K) in presence of 6 prime ministers from the Western Balkans, on Energy Systems at the Crans Forum Montana, Vienna and on Novel Battery Energy Storage Systems at the African Energy Forum, London, UK. To date, he has published numerous technical consulting reports, over 20 publications in IEEE, IET and CIGRE and is contributing to the European Commission standards on HVDC grids.
