Preface & Dedication I have always considered this volume to be an addenda to “Be Ready!” as it originated relatively early in my development as a songwriter along with the work mentioned. As a secular performing musician for many years in Sonoma County, and as a music instructor, I always had an interest in Swing tunes and often performed many songs from the 30’ and 40’s on both piano and guitar, which led to my interest in writing these types of tunes myself. In my development as a songwriter based on Biblical themes, I soon discovered that much of the text that I was writing fit quite well with blues, jazz and swing, and thus the beginning and development of this songbook. Many, if not all of the New Testament writers, as evidenced in this songbook, were very concerned with the purity of the church and its leadership. Though they were speaking of problems that existed in their own day, I believe much of this text is quite applicable to the current day Christian religious institutions and the choices that are being made high up in leadership resulting in much chaos within the church environment between the liberals trying to be relevant in today’s society, and the conservatives trying to be faithful by protecting tradition and the ancient way. Whatever your views may be on the return of Christ, the millennial kingdom and our future in heaven, I still believe that we as individuals, and collectively as a church need to be ready and willing to deal with sin, its consequences, and always preach repentance and the forgiveness of God for those truly seeking Him. As in many of my other volumes, this work evolved into what it is today over decades of study and the help of The Holy Spirit guiding me along my way. I find it amazing again in this volume containing Shades of Blue Light, that there are exactly 33 songs, an obvious association with The Holy Trinity to me. These songs deal with problems in the church community. The other 11 songs in Dark Shadows On The Kingdom focus more on being faithful to Christ by both resisting and being aware of the devil and his agents. As in Volumes 16-18 of “Be Ready For Christ Our Coming King!” I believe that God’s heart flows through every page of this volume. In conclusion, I would like to dedicate this volume as well to The Holy Trinity. I hope that it causes you to reflect deeply on your life and your relationship to Our Heavenly Father, His Glorious Son, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit flowing throughout the world in our hearts. I pray that I, and you as well, may lead a life worthy of the calling of Christ.

A Servant of Christ, Will Goldstein

How To Use This Book

This edition is designed specifically for guitarists, keyboard players and bass players who prefer a lead sheet format. There is a variety of song forms used in this book and instructions are notated in the scores as well as some helpful hints on how to use the canons below. There are also many styles – traditional major and minor keys, modal keys, and even swing tunes with Jazz and Blues chord progressions. Some of the tunes may be difficult to hear unless the singer is highly trained in these areas of chromatic melody. In some songs, a variety of soloists may be helpful. In reference to the key structure of the songs, I chose keys that the worship team leaders, soloist and wherever applicable, the congregation can sing, and the average to skilled musician can play. The bass note is included at the bottom of chord symbols if needed. Instrumental introductions and interludes are marked in the scores, and are intended for the piano, or any appropriate available instrument. These short themes may be raised or lowered an octave to accommodate the instrument desired. Permission is granted by the publisher to make copies of the book to assist musicians in the performance of these songs at any worship service. It is hoped that these songs will be used in church services, bible studies, evangelistic concerts, Christian schools & camps, and any function where the Body of Christ gathers for praise to our Lord, Jesus Christ. CCLI #’s are included in the songs. Catalogue - The King’s Court Please report usage to CCLI. Website: www.ccli.com

About The Canons - There are many types and examples of canons (rounds) in this book that can be performed in a variety of ways. Here are some possible suggestions:

1) Learn the canon melody well before attempting to incorporate the successive entrances (additional canon parts). 2) Use instruments only to play the additional canon parts - this will maintain the beauty of the music, and allow for the lyrics to be heard and understood more clearly. 3) After the congregation has learned the song, try having the worship team sing the additional canon parts. 4) In the songs that are canons you will notice a direction sign - “canon tag chords here.” It is suggested in the form at the top of each song with a canon that the melody first be introduced without the canon and then later with the canon. When the canon is coming to an end and often fading out, the musicians will need to jump to “canon tag chords here” with the chords to allow for the canon to finish each of its successive entrances. Usually the melody is sung one more time without the additional canon entrances for clarity, and to allow for any additional tags at the end that may alter the chord progression. 5) Finally, try dividing the congregation and have them sing the additional canon parts as desired.

Theory & Chord Construction ChartTheory & Chord Construction ChartTheory & Chord Construction ChartTheory & Chord Construction ChartTheory & Chord Construction ChartThe Chart below, in conjunction with the code & formulas given, has condensed on to one page all the scales & chords necessary to

understand the basics of music theory. The top row is the names of the intervals that can be measured as the distance above the root which is in the farleft column. These intervals can be applied to each of the given roots to create scales & chords. All intervals are measured above the root. Music theory

requires extensive training, and it is beyond the scope of this book to go into more detail.
