of the Mariner
and Soldier
with John Moseley
February 19, 7- 9 p.m.
Join the NC Maritime Museum at Southport and The Friends of the Museum in welcoming John Moseley, Assistant Site Manager, Fort Fisher State Historic Site. He will discuss one of the most dead-ly diseases to haunt seafarers and armies for cen-turies - scurvy. Scurvy is a condition caused by a lack of vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, in the diet. The knowledge of vitamin C and its effects on the hu-man body has only been known since 1932. What was life like for those people deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables for long periods of time? Discover the effects of this disease in world, US and local history. The program will be held at the Southport Commu-nity Building, 223 East Bay St., Southport. A lecture by Dr. Hilke Thuer

Dr. Hilke Thuer, a native of Hannover,
Germany earned her Master’s Degree
in architecture from Technical Uni-versity, Munich and her PhD. in
Classical Archaeology from the Uni-
versity of Vienna in 1980. Beginning
work in Ephesus in 1975, she has de-voted thirty-six years to work in Ephesus.
From 1997 to 2005 she was Assistant Direc
tor of the Ephesus excavations. Her skills in architecture combined with archaeology led to work specifically with a number of
research projects at the lower level of Curetes Street, the center of the ancient site.
At one period she became deeply involved with grave monuments, and gained inter-national recognition through her investigations of a tomb which she correctly identi-
fied as the tomb of Cleopatra’s youngest sister, Arsinoe IVth.
The program will be held at Murrow Hall, Southport Trinity, 209 E. Nash St.,

In recognition of Black History Month and in con-
junction with Smithville Township and the City of
Southport’s Celebration of Black History, the NC
Maritime Museum at Southport opened a new exhib-
it, “We Fished for A Living.”
At 7 feet 8 inches tall, Southport’s “Gentleman Giant”
was honored in a special exhibit opening on Friday,
February 1. Like many others during the first half of
the 20th Century, Elias “Nehi” Gore supported his
family working in the fishing industry. A Morehead child remarked that
Gore was “tall like a Nehi soda bottle,” and the nickname stuck. Legend
has it that he received the salary of two men because of his extra
strength and his desire to work hard. Nehi stood out among others, not
only in height, but in his contributions to the people of Southport.
4th Annual GOLF CLASSIC
The Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport will hold its
fourth annual Maritime Museum Golf Clas-
sic on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Members Club course in St. James. This event has proven to be an enjoyable and entertaining day of golf for its
participants. Registration includes 18 holes of golf, cart, range balls, and prizes
in various categories. Participants will complete their day with happy hour, dinner, and raffles, along with live and silent auctions.
100% of the tournament proceeds will support the North
Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport!

New Years’ Greetings From the Friends by Shirley Wilson The Friends board held elections January 17, 2013 and the new slate of officers is: Chairman _____________Shirley Wilson Vice-Chairman _________ Wayne Strickland Treasurer _____________ Wayne Berry Recording Secretary ____ Jim Carey Thank you to those board members who are willing to serve on the Executive Committee for a one year term. The rest of our board members are: Linda Bowen, Brenda Bowling, Mi-chael Flynn, Walt Madsen, Cecil Rhodes and Jim Trent. THANK YOU WALT MADSEN: On behalf of the Board & the Friends, I would like to thank Walt Madsen who has guided us as Chairman for nearly five years. Walt has been the cheer-leader and “big picture” person who has been steadfast in his devotion to the Board. He helped guide us through a Capital
Campaign that allowed us to move from a storefront Museum to a renovated and fabulous new Museum. Lucky for us, Walt has agreed to stay on the Board and will help steer our course for our next expansion. We would be remiss if we did not thank Mary Strickland, Mu-seum Manager/Curator for her devotion, suggestions, assis-tance, etc. Mary IS the Museum and it is a pleasure and hon-or to work with her. We always welcome participation and input from our Friends & we encourage you to let us know if you have ideas/suggestions for ways we can improve our Friends group. Also, if you have a particular interest/skill, we would welcome you sharing this with our group. Anyone interested in learning the maritime skill of marlin-
spike knot tying is welcome to join Bert Felton and Ted
Dingley at the NC Maritime Museum at Southport. Some of
the work will be decorative, some practical, and all of it will
be fun and entertaining. Meeting is free. (910)457-5302.

Mary along with Donald McHose started the first Fixed Base Operation at Brunswick County Airport, "Sencland Air Park."
Served on the The Frying Pan Lightship Commission.
Charter Member of the Southport Rescue Squad, 1975.
Through Tel Aviv University, Mary worked at the Israeli archeological dig, Tel Michal at Herzlia.
Mary served for 8 years on the Southport Board of Aldermen. Her work in city government helped bring Block Grants to the City of Southport.
She was a member, and for three years the Chairman, of the Brunswick County Nursing Home Advisory Council.
Mary served on the Governor's NC Marine Science Council.
Advisor for the NC Department of Transportation - Ferry Division.
Advisor for the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
Member of the Brunswick County Tourism Development Authority.
Served on the NC Fourth of July Festival Committee, became a Chaperone and Business Manager for the NC Fourth of July Queen. Assistant Director for the Queen's Pageant, pre-liminary judge for the Miss America pageant system, and North Carolina Director for the North Carolina Miss USA pageant system.

Branch manager when the Southport Maritime Museum was incorporated into the North Carolina Maritime Museum system, 2000.
Mary’s passion for the past and vision for the future has left an indelible mark on Southport.
Museum Curator, Mary Strickland was honored January 17, 2013 on the
Southport Museum’s wall of noteworthy people. The list of her accomplish-
ments have made an everlasting imprint on the city of Southport.
