Overview: Who is Amy?
• Who is Amy? is a non-profit organization for the rare and terminal disease, amyloidosis. Because amyloidosis affects approximately eight persons per million, the research for the disease is limited. There is no cure or generally accepted treatment plan for amyloidosis.
• Who is Amy? obtained its 501(c)(3) status June, 29 2006
• Founded by three sisters born in Colorado – father suffers from amyloidosis and has survived 2 bone marrow transplants
What is amyloidosis?
• Amyloidosis is a bone marrow disease
• In a healthy body, bone marrow aides the creation of
helpful antibodies (proteins) to protect against disease
and infection.
• Amyloidosis is a group of diseases that result from an
abnormality in several of these antibodies resulting full
organ breakdown. • It affects 8 out of 1 million people
Affects of amyloidosis
• Terminal disease with no cure as of yet
• Classified as a blood cancer like leukemia
• Causes congestive heart failure and fluid in the lungs
• Affects the tissues of the heart, kidney and other organs
• Debilitates everyday activities
Goal:
Raise Awarenss. Advance Research.
Save Lives
• Raises money for the amyloidosis treatment and
research center at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minn.
(Hematologic Malignancies Program – amyloidosis
research)
• Increases awareness of amyloidosis in Denver
healthcare community
• In 2010 we are incorporating a seminar about
amyloidosis at the University of Colorado Medical
School for doctors and students
Past Success
• Donated $17,000 to Mayo Clinic since 2006
• Drove more than 250 attendees to the events
• Attained headline sponsors (DC10, Dolce Vita, nine75,
Premiere Image, Brandis B., and more)
• Hosted food, drinks and a fashion show
• Approximately 100 local shops, restaurants and
individuals donated silent auction items
• Obtained press coverage
Rise Against Rare Blood Disease
• September 11, 2010
• Evening fund raiser at a trendy, eclectic downtown atmosphere
• Honoring Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers Dr. Jeffrey Matous for his support in the community to amyloidosis
• Education about amyloidosis via a video presentation
• Good music, food and drinks
• Silent Auction
• Special Entertainment (live music, fashion show, video)
