` What is used cooking oil?

Also known as Waste Vegetable Oil, it is garbage.

` How does waste cooking oil affect our health?

When used cooking oil is reused, it becomes more acidic

and rancid hence it is detrimental for human

consumption.

` How is waste cooking oil used at present? It is now used as main extenders in hogs and poultry feeds.

It is popularly used for frying street foods.

It is easily disposed off into the drains which clogs the

drainage system of a city.

Often times still sold and

reused at this stage.

Imagine the food you are

eating was cooked with this.

Page 4: WHO - DOH Presentation

Frequent reusing turns it

to pure garbage.

Definitely not for human

use.

` Is there a better option for utilizing used cooking oil? Yes! It can be converted to biodegradable fuel called

biodiesel.

` How is used cooking oil made into fuel?

Through a process called transesterification.

` Do people benefit from using biodiesel from used

cooking oil?

x

Biodiesel is a lot cheaper than commercial petro fuels.x It is environment friendly with less CO, CO2, SO2, PM,

and PAH emissions.

x Biodiesel is definitely a solution to the

Climate Change crisis.

Stages from waste cooking oil to Biodiesel.

We have the will to do it.

This is the vicious cycle of the Used Cooking Oil.We can make a change and stop this cycle!

Meat Food is fried in oil

consumed by the human.

Used Cooking Oil is usedagain by street food

vendors.

Used Cooking Oil israncid and is sold for

feeds extenders

Hogs and poultry eatthe feeds.

Pork and poultry make itto mans kitchen.

That is the waste Cooking Oil

consumed by the bird.It even clings to the meat!

` Olivia la OCastillo, D.B.A., the President of AsiaPacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and

Production (APRSCP) presented Biodiesel Used

Cooking Oil Technology Pursuing Greener Growth in

Asia and the Pacific in the Solid Waste ManagementForum held last April 5, 2005.

It is imperative that we start consuming more

efficiently and contribute to sustainable development

otherwise we need to look for four other planets to livein and support our habits.

The present demand for biodiesel

is now at 980,000 liters per year.

Very few took in to the mandate

for renewable energy resources.

` RA 9367: BIOFUELS ACT of 2006

In January 12, 2007, this Law

mandates that a minimum 1%

biodiesel by volume shall be

blended into all diesel enginepetroleum fuels. Furthermore,

this law also mandates that

within two years, a minimum of

2% biodiesel by volume shall be

blended into all diesel engine

petroleum fuels.

` RA 9513: RENEWABLE ENERGYACT of 2008

In December 10, 2008, this Law

mandates to accelerate the

exploration, development and

increased utilization of  renewable energy resources

to effectively prevent and

reduce harmful and toxic

emissions to protect health

and environment.

` What is biodiesel? It is a kind of biofuel that is not composed of petroleum

(fossil) or imported crude oil.

It is a renewable and biodegradable fuel extracted from

plant oils such as palm, rapseed and coconut. These aresame plant oils processed into cooking oils!

Now we also have crude Jatropha oil.

` What is Transesterification? Production of biodiesel through the reaction of plant/animal oil with

methanol or ethanol, yielding methyl or ethyl ester or biodiesel

with glycerol as the by-product.

Of course we will always need equipment.

Then Now

` Information Dissemination

Through brochures,

handouts,

television interviews with thelocal news, and

newspaper articles.

` Product Demonstrations

On how biodiesel is made

and what are its effects.

How much it costs and howbeneficial it is to both the

environment and the

community.

` August 26, 2009:

A letter was submitted a letter to DR.

MYRNA C. CABOTAJE, MD, MPH, CESO II,

the Director IV for the Center for HealthDevelopment CAR.

A request for an approval of support in the

campaign to change the cycle of how used cookingoil is being given to poultries and piggeries.

` October 2, 2009

A Memorandum, entitled Public Advisory Regarding the

Sale of Used Cooking Oil, was given to NAZARITA T.

TACANDONG, RPh, MPA, the Director IV for the Bureau

of Food and Drugs Muntinlupa City from Dr. Myrna

Cabotaje.

This was done in response to the letter submitted last

August and requests: a copy of a public advisory

pertaining to this [selling of used cooking oil asextenders and to street food vendors] illegal practice

and the hazard it imposes to the health of the public.

` Your support and cooperation in this campaign is vital!

World Health Organization says, Encourage your people to

disseminate information on the benefits of using biodiesel and

the hazards of consuming waste cooking oil.

Department of Health CAR says, Let us start here in our city

and communities to ban the use and sale of used cooking oil tostreet food vendors, poultries and piggeries.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources EMB

Support and help us campaign on the proper disposal of waste

cooking oil by contributing it to the production of biodiesel

instead of throwing it down the city drainage system. LGU Baguio City To conduct inspections on food establishments

on how much waste cooking oil is presently accumulated and

discarded.

This is the BEST CYCLE for USED COOKING OIL.We can economize, have good waste management and at the same time,

prevent sickness and disease because farm animals do not eat garbage oil

therefore we do not end up eating this garbage.

We are better in health by avoiding the hazard caused from

using waste cooking oil in our food..

` Biodiesel and petrol diesel can be used

interchangeably.***

` Biodiesel and petrol diesel can be mixed at any

ratio. Its is call a biodiesel blend (BXXX).B20  20% biodiesel and 80% petrol diesel

B50  50% biodiesel and 50% petro diesel

B100 - is 100% biodiesel for engine model above

the year 2000

` Engine models below the year 2000 can only

have a B50 blend as a maximum mixture.` .
