“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has

come!” - 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV84)

What does this Scripture mean? It means that the old sinful self is gone, and God has

made us into a new creation, given us a new IDENTITY. This means from the moment

we become a member of the body of Christ, God defines who we are, not us, the world,

or anything else.

There are many scriptures in the Bible that affirm this identity in Christ, given to us by

God. So what does the Bible say who we are?

1. A Child of God

"He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not

recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet

to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become

children of God" - John 1:10-12 (NIV84)

Christ created the world but the people He created don't recognize him, and do not love

Him. But to us who accept Him as Lord of our lives we are reborn spiritually, receiving

new life from God. This new birth changes us totally, with new attitudes, desires, and

motives. Just as being born physically makes you physically alive and in your parents'

family, being born of God makes you spiritually alive and a part of God's family.

2. Strong in the Lord

"Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will

fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador inchains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should." - Ephesians 6:19-20 (NIV84)

Paul did not ask the Ephesians to pray that his chains were broken, but that he may

continue to speak fearlessly for Christ in spite of them. God can use us in any

circumstance to do his will. Though we can pray for our circumstances to change, we

should also pray for God to be able to use us as we are.

3. Free from Condemnation

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" - Romans

8:1 (NIV84)

Because God so loved us that He gave his one and only Son, we are declared not guilty by God, and are free to live in Him.

4 . The Light of the World

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden." - Matthew 5:14

(NIV84)

Christ is our light, when we live for Him, His light also shines through us. We shouldn't

let sin, depression, anger, or a defeatist attitude dim His light in us. We need to be a beacon of truth and shine His light for the world to see!

5. Alive in Christ

"But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with

Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved."

- Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIV84)

We were once dead in sin and bondage, but now we are alive in Christ! We are no longer

slaves to sin or its power because Jesus has freed us from it!

6. The righteousness of God

"God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the

righteousness of God." - 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV84)

An exchange took place at the cross that day. Christ took our sin and in exchange for it

He gave us the righteousness of God. God's love is demonstrated in that He gave ussomething of infinite worth (His righteousness) for something that is completely

worthless (our sin).

7. A friend of Christ

"I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business.

Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have

made known to you." - John 15:15 (NIV84)

God further demonstrates His love for us by calling us friends. He is still Lord and

Master and so we also owe Him our obedience, but only because He loves us.

8. Given a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline

"For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of

 self-discipline." - 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV84)

Paul urged Timothy to be bold, when we become fearful, our effectiveness for God is

neutralized. The Holy Spirit gives us power to overcome fear so that we may continue todo His work.

9. Members Of A Chosen Race, A Royal Priesthood, A Holy Nation, A People for

God's own possession

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to

God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his

wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once

you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." - 1 Peter 2:9-10 (NIV84)

People often base their self-concept on their accomplishments. But our relationship with

God is far more important than our jobs, success, wealth, or knowledge. We have been

chosen by God as His very own, and we have been called to represent Him to others.

Your value comes from being one of God's children, not from what you can achieve.

You have worth because of what God does, not because of what you do.

10. I have been established, anointed, and sealed by God in Christ, and I have been

given the Holy Spirit as a pledge guaranteeing my inheritance to come.

"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of

your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy

Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who

are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory." - Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV84)

The Holy Spirit is God's guarantee that we belong to Him and that He will do what He

has promised. The presence of the Holy Spirit in us demonstrates the authenticity of our

faith, proves that we are God's children, and secures eternal life for us. His power works

in us to transform us now, and what we experience now is a taste of the total change we

will experience in eternity!
