To contribute to global health security by leading clinical management and research and development (R & D) in the fields of emerging, re-emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the world, especially in the Asia Pacific Region.

In recent years, many outbreak experiences in the world pointed out the importance of global collaboration in promoting Interna-tional Health Regulation (IHR), and supporting World Health Organization (WHO) in strengthening response capacity to emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) outbreaks. In April 2017, DCC became WHO Collaborating Center (WHO CC) for Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Emerging Infectious Diseases. DCC provides technical support to WHO in building country preparedness against EIDs. DCC contributes to global health security by carrying out WHO’s “the Asia Pacific Strategy for Emerging Diseases and Public Health Emergencies (APSED)” and tackling outbreaks, with special emphasis on IPC and clinical management.

Role of DCC as a WHOCC for Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Emerging Infectious Diseases

Division of Infectious Diseases: We provide clinical care and consultative services for infectious diseases by leading a consulting team of infectious disease experts.

Travel Clinic: Our travel clinic provides travelers with pre-travel health check, immunization, and post-travel care. This clinic also serves as an official yellow fever vaccine center.

Division of Preparedness for Emerging Infections: We provide medical care of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases as a designated medical institution for specific infectious disease in Japan. In order to prepare for highly infectious and lethal diseases, we maintain an isolation unit and conduct training sessions in collaboration with quarantine offices.

What we doClinical care and services

DCC has been involved in a global surveillance and international collaborative research on infectious diseases. We also address a diverse range of health issues such as Japan Registry for Infectious Diseases from Abroad (J-RIDA) for imported infectious diseases, Japan Pretravel Consultation Register (J-PRECOR), new diagnostic for imported infectious diseases, unapproved drugs and bloodstream infections through multi-institutional collaborative studies in Japan.

Global Vision of Disease Control and Prevention Center (DCC)

Establish resilient health system

Develop guideline and policy recommendation to enhancing global health security

Strengthen heath system by human resource development of professional based on principles of clinical management of infectious diseases

Strengthen preparedness and ability to respond to outbreaks of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases as well as AMR

Tackle emerging issues such as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), infectious diseases caused by climate change, and infection prevention and control (IPC) in the elderly population, in line with the trends of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Research & Development (R&D)

Lead international collaborative clinical research together with global partners for an improved clinical practice

Mission

Disease Control and Prevention Center (DCC) was established in the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM) in 2004 to control and prevent emerging infectious diseases. After integration with the Division of Infectious Diseases, DCC advanced to a new stage in 2012. DCC has three divisions: Division of Infectious Diseases, Travel Clinic, and Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections. In order to carry out NCGM’s fundamental mission, which is “Manage-ment of the risks of global infectious diseases,” our activities include medical care, prevention, education and research based on cooperation between experts of various fields of infectious diseases.
