Who cares for the Ocean?

We are delighted to welcome pupils from nine Cornish schools as well as Cornwall Youth Chamber

Choir, the Minack Youth Choir and dancers from Lockwood-Urban Dance & Theatre School, all of

whom have put their hearts and souls into creating this performance of Ocean World, led by The

Minack Theatre in partnership with Cornwall Music Service Trust.

Ocean World follows a hump-backed whale and her

young calf as they make the perilous journey from the southern seas to their feeding grounds in the North Atlantic. Their story is told through music, dance and song, as they face each challenge that

threatens their survival and that of their whole world.

Written in 1990 by Peter Rose and Anne Conlon, Ocean World was commissioned by WWF and was

premiered at the Royal Festival Hall. It was also shown as part of Channel 4’s Fragile Earth series in 1991, when the narration was spoken by Sir David

Attenborough. Although it is thirty years old, its message for us is even more urgent today.

I performed in a concert performance of Ocean World in Penzance in the 1990s as part of Penzance Youth Wind Band. When John Brolly and I started thinking about creating a mass schools’ project to support the work done by Cornwall Music Service Trust and Cornwall Music Education Hub encouraging primary school children to sing, this piece became a natural choice. Sadly the issues raised within the piece are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago when it was written.

The piece gives opportunity to a wide range of children and solo opportunities to some of the amazing young singers, actors and dancers that we have in Cornwall. It was important to us here at the Minack that we stage the piece as fully as possible, introducing actors and puppets to tell the story on our cliffside stage with the ocean as a backdrop.

We would particularly like to thank all who helped us create a short version of this piece for the 8 partners of the G7 Summit at very short notice earlier in June.

Zoë Curnow Executive Director, the Minack Theatre

It is always a pleasure and a privilege to work with young people to create performances, and Ocean World has been particularly special. It has given us the opportunity to bring together groups and talented individuals from schools across the county, with some of the best practitioners in music and dance. Creating something on this scale is a huge challenge for all involved, especially against the backdrop of the pandemic, but it feels that all the hard work behind the scenes has paid off and that we finally have a performance that will be remembered for years to come. Ocean World was written thirty years ago but its themes are now more relevant than ever in a world where the lessons of the past do not seem to have been learnt. One of the joys of working on this production has been discussing the future of our oceans with the young performers and hearing their passion and positivity about campaigning and practical solutions for the world’s problems. Despite the tragic elements of this story the overriding thing I will take away from this experience is an optimism that the next generation will be better curators of our world than the current one.

Cornwall Music Service Trust is delighted to be working with the Minack Theatre on this fantastic production of Ocean World. This has been a truly collaborative project between the theatre, CMST, local schools, senior students and professional musicians.

CMST teachers Christine Judge and Cheryl Brendish have really enjoyed working with the soloists as well as each of the primary schools taking part to deliver vocal coaching and development. The engagement of young people and staff in this project has been wonderful and we are so pleased to be able to perform live in what has certainly been a challenging year for the Arts! As well as providing the chance to learn high quality and challenging music, the themes running through the show have been a gateway to exploring and discussing important environmental issues relating to our planet and its oceans.

CMST’s senior vocal ensemble, Cornwall Youth Chamber Choir is also taking part and some great new musical friendships have been forged between schools and the Chamber Choir through the sharing of vocal aids for rehearsal as well as recorded

messages between groups! It is great to be able to encourage and inspire our younger musicians by introducing them to more experienced performers culminating in a joint performance with a live band of professional musicians.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in making this production happen. Particular thanks must go to all the young people who have put so much time and energy into bringing this heartfelt show to the stage.

We are extremely grateful to the Minack for providing this excellent opportunity for our students to perform Ocean World in what must be the perfect location!

We very much hope you enjoy watching as much as we have enjoyed preparing!
