WEATHERor not?

Monday January 7

Adelaide, B105Metro Mania. No I’m not named after the city, people ask me all the time if I was born in Adelaide, I wasn’t. I’ve been once with my mum and I remember visiting Haigh’s Chocolate (it was yum).

Amber, C214Everything!. I’m looking forward to everything. I haven’t been on a camp like this before, I couldn’t decide what activities to do, so I want to do them all. I don’t want to miss a thing.

Dominic ‘The Dom’, D536Race Car. I like going super fast, it might be in my blood!”. My grandpa drives fast, there was one time in Lebanon he overtook 3 trucks in a row.

Kush, B105Woodhouse. I’m looking forward to another camp. A camp within a camp. We have patrols off there today, so we’ll have inside info when they get back. “

Liam, D536Bang . It’s fun and exciting. I’ve been shooting a couple of times before, I love hitting the target. I’m pretty confi-dent I’ll hit the target at least three-quarters of the time!

Sophie, B105Bang – Shooting . When I was 9 I went to a shooting range in Arizona with my family, I shot six bullets from a pistol and hit the target twice. It will be fun to do it again and see how many times I can hit the target this time.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

What a day! Heaps more activities. (And, OK, heaps more dust as well.) How’s your Patrol going? Is everyone having a great time? If you answered

‘yes’ to those questions ,was that because you guess they’re all going well or because you really know? One of the key parts of being a Scout is being part of a Patrol. In a good Patrol (and there are lots of them around) all the Scouts look out for each other. If you’re the PL, of course, this is a big part of

your job. But if you’re not, it’s still important – remember that leadership is not just about having a title or a badge.

by KAREN MEYERSThe 5th Jamboree 1955-56 was at Clif-ford Park, Victoria. The land was owned by Lord Clifford and this one was called the 2nd Pan Pacific Jamboree but was remembered as the “Mudboree” because of the amount of rain and very muddy conditions. The event had 16,000 partici-pants from all states of Australia and from 21 different countries.

by KERRIE MCDONALDHead to Splat for onsite water fun, rotating around six different activities.

At the Surfboard Painting base, your patrol will get busy decorating a pre-cut surfboard. Ethan, Audrey, Caelan, Lucy, Heloise and Rhys A545 said “We’ll keep ours in our Tambourine Bay Scout hall.”

The Mini-Golf course lets you complete as many possible holes within the time limit. If the holes prove too challenging, you can calm down in the Chill Out Zone. Let go of your stress with a game of petanque, build a sandcastle or hang out in the misting tent.

For a more active challenge, make your way around the Obstacle Course. Can you overcome the boulder wall, the commando net and the Mission Impossible lasers? Will you be able to make your way across the pool on the balance beams and inflatable rings?

If that’s not enough wet fun, there’s also the inflatable towering Water Slide.

At Pirate Discovery, you’ll use cryptic clues to navigate around a treasure hunt, solving puzzles at each stage. The first three Patrols to complete the course win the coveted Splat activity badge. Hannah, B212, said “it’s like an escape room but outside.”

by ASH MARKSWatch your backs, there’s a new gang in town, and this bend ain’t big enough for all of us.

There is a bunch of shady characters emerging from the dust around Tailem Bend. These dodgy looking Dust Bandits are rogue Scouts who have been driven to extreme lengths by the harsh Jamboree conditions.

They might not wear leather jackets or have gang colours, but you can pick them by their squinty expressions and the face masks they have scrapped together in a post-apocalyptic fashion. From scarves and buffs, to medical masks and swimming goggles, it’s survival of the dust-less.

Keep your Patrol members close and your badges closer, there’s no telling what these Bandits are capable of. Photos: CHELSEA LONG

THE PARTY KEEPS ON GOINGby MATTHEW ELLIS Party night one, check. Party night 2? Of course! There’s a party every night at AJ2019.

Last night, DJ Bond lit up the stage to a packed audience of Scouts, the beach balls made another appearance over the crowd.

“I want to dance with all of Jamboree,” said Lucas from B443.

Mitchell from A651 said, “I can’t wait for the loud music and the light show.”

Finn from C550 said, “I hope there are good tunes and heaps of bass.”

Amy from C550 “tonight is going to be a great night hanging with friends and dancing with them.”

LIFE HACKS OF THE CHIEF COMMISSIONER#2: Get a tent like Brendan Watson As many know, Chief Commissioner Phil Harrison is an outdoor educator. Phil sums up his role: “Five days a week I run challenging, engaging outdoor activities for young people and on the other two days I sit in Scout meetings.”

When Phil gets out hiking, he goes lightweight. But at AJ2019 he’s met his match in Victorian Chief Commissioner Brendan Watson.

Brendan’s tent is large enough for a queen-size bed, a chair, a fridge and a freezer. Everything is solar-powered so while we were coping with 41 degrees the other day, Brendan was complaining that his drink bottle had frozen overnight.

Brendan’s tent is in the Leader area. You can pick it by the sensor light that turns on at 3 in the morning every time someone walks past. Says Phil “Brendan’s tent is like the Taj Mahal, but somehow I can’t see Groups buying them for each Patrol.”

by SHARON WALLACEPhoto: by GREG CURNOWScouts if you go out in the mall today, you’re sure of a big surpriseIf you forgot to Slip, Slop, Slap, you better go in disguise! The AJ2019 organisers are aware of the newly formed Vigilante Group Slip Slop Slap and are cautioning all Scouts to be on the alert. Slip (Evan Scott), Slop (Mason Sweeny) & Slap (Jye Durnan) have assigned them-selves the role of Sun Smart Ambassadors for the Camp. The Venturers from NSW, Vic ACT respectively met at AJ2019 and simultaneously noticed a difference between themselves and some of the

Scouts wandering around the mall.Leading by example, they are asking “What’s the difference between you and me?”It could be that a scout is looking a little pink (in colour – not looking like P!nk the singer) orisn’t wearing a hat. Along with a joke or two, they can segue into the dangers of not being sunsmart. Mostly the scouts report it as an honest mistake: “I left my hat at camp” or “It just blew off down the mall”. The Vigilantes are confident that, by providing a friendly reminder to Slip Slop Slap, ‘no scout will be left behind’ due to really bad sunburn!

I AIN’T AFRAID OF NO GHOST BADGEby ASH AR SThe Antarctic Assassins (more commonly known as Troop B101) have a stealth offering in their badge swapping arsenal – a ghost badge.

Ghost badges are the same as any other badge, except they are all white! These silhou-ette alternatives are usually rarer than their coloured cousins, which makes them harder to find – and harder still to keep clean.

If you want to try and negotiate a trade deal, track down a Scout from B101. These ninja penguins are trying to find any other ghosts that might be around, but it is

hard trying to see anything in this dust, let alone a ghost! So, we’re setting a challenge are there any other ghost badges here at AJ2019? If your troop has one, come and visit us at The Daily Bunyip!

I can and I will!by CHL RR LLThe oldest and youngest members of AJ2019 met yesterday Dugald Mc Dougall of the Tasmanian Contingent, aged 90, and Pearl C432 aged 10. Dugald, ex-navy reservist, Sea Scout, and Leader fondly recalled his past Jamborees while Pearl is at her first.

Pearl joined Scouts in May 2018, and aims to achieve her blue and green cords. Determined to attend AJ2019, Pearl started working on her Pioneer award a month after she joined the Troop.

Telling of trips to places such as Austria and Switzerland, Dugald attended his first Jamboree in 1948. Recalling his Scouting experiences, including trips to Austria and Switzerland, he joked that “they say it’s the short term memory that goes first, not the long.”

Despite their ages, both individuals live out the message spread around the camp “I can and I will.” Speaking from experience, Dugald left Pearl with the advice to “put your best foot forward, strive, and have a good time”, as we all will.

When I say “Aloe”,you say “Vera”

by CHLOE TYRRELLPhoto: CHELSEA LONGThe elements here at Tailem Bend seem to be giving the Scouts a run for their money. The soaring heat has started an uproar from dissatisfied sunburnt Scouts over the lack of aloe vera on site. Sage, D540, and his fellow patrol members came to the Daily Bunyip to plead their case. “They at least should’ve put it on the packing list, “ Annabella stated.

Despite applying sunscreen and wearing a hat, Sage sports an intense new tan line, in strawberry pink.

Of course, aloe vera won’t be needed if you slip, slop slap!

CFS KEEPING US SAFE Men and women in a dierent uniformby KERRIE MCDONALDThe SA Country Fire Service (CFS) have a 9-person crew on-site 24 hours a day to provide fire, rescue and HAZMAT services for our Jamboree. They’re also responsible for the fire awareness of all troops off-site, using IT, radio and satellite phones.

On-site, they have a 3000L tanker equipped with urban and wildfire response equipment, breathing apparatus, and thermal imaging equipment. They also have a quick response vehicle for wildfire response and small incidents.

All of the CFS crews are volunteers. Several of the crew have been through Scouts, including CFS liaison Shane Clinch (pictured far left). “We do it to protect lives, property and the environment,” Shane said. “We want the Scouts to stay safe and have a happy time while they’re here.”

Apart from putting out a couple of small grass fires started by the fireworks last night, they’ve been quiet. “We haven’t had any major call-outs yet and we’re hoping to keep it that way,” he said. “We’d advise Scouts to remain vigilant and act safely.”

If you’re interested in joining the CFS, they have a cadet program from age 11 and you can join as a senior firefighter at 16. You’ll learn basic fire-fighting skills and many cadets go on to have a career in fire-fighting.

“We were back at our camp getting dinner when the Opening Ceremony fireworks went off. We weren’t expect-ing it so we screamed and one Scout almost fell over a guy rope.”

Brianna A“This is my 3rd Jambo-ree. I’ve been to AJ2016, NZ Jamboree and now AJ2019. AJ2016 was different because of its size compared to normal camps. NZ was awesome, because of learning about the different culture, but also seeing the similarities between Australia and New Zealand. So far AJ2019 has been amazing.”

“We have two Troop wheelbarrows to get food. One doesn’t have bolts so when I used it, it fell apart. Then the wheels fell off and when I went to take it back, the handle fell off.”

Andrew C 3

“Because our trolley fell apart, we had to carry our food back from the store. The bottom fell out of our box so we got a new one, and then the bottom fell out of it. Luckily some lovely WA Scouts helped us carry our food back.”

hoebe C 3

“We had fun today at Wet n’ (Very) Windy. They

had to cancel some of the events because of the wind, but the Dragon-boats and rubber duck-ies were the highlight. We can’t tell you what the rubber duckies are to keep it a surprise.”

Dear Daily Bunyip,Love your newspaper which I am reading from Myan-mar (Burma). A big shout out for the SA Lones and A212 who’ve managed to bring in kids from all over SA and even abroad. Our son, Henri, travelled 8854 km (and that’s one way) from Yangon through Hong Kong to Adelaide on his own and is missing nine days of school to join AJ2019 (requiring a week of schoolwork through his Christmas holidays in preparation) - all because we knew AJ2019 would be more than worth it. Thanks to the amazing Leaders in SA Lones (Lee and Andrew) and the A212 leaders for their extra efforts. Huge thanks to all who are making this happen.

Bad news, sports fans. 6 people who...Are Jamboree Veterans

Old Man JeffersonDay 3 - Sunday January 6 2019AD

Yesterday was much quieter. Light winds freshened the site, as Scouts wafted past like tumbleweeds. Everyone cleared out as activities began, so we were able to fully focus on our frapping turns.

Some people ask why we’re still setting up our site. They claim that this is 2019 and Jamborees should be about fun.

But I think that fun is over-rated. Like uniform, logos, and the girls-in-Scouting experiment, we have to be careful of fads that come and go.

The tried and tested parts of Scouting - the woggle, garter tabs and being thrifty - are our enduring values. It might be 2019, but I think all right-thinking people will agree that the 1950s were our heyday.

So I was surprised again to see an extraordinary number of girls on the site.

Over a mug of hot cocoa at Troop Council the PLs and I often discuss our favourite Scout Laws. Sometimes

the lads ask me for advice on life. They’re particularly interested in my many major mistakes so they can learn from my mis-steps.

They ask me about girls and I explain that I’m still waiting for the right Lady Cub Master to come along.

But on Visitors Day, EG2019 will be swarming with sisters and cousins and Girl Guides. Not that I’ve anything against Guides. They make wonderful homemakers, and quite good biscuits.

A friend of mine met a nice lass at the St George’s Day parade and he’s enjoyed 25 happy years of marriage. (Unfortunately they married in 1955.)

To be cautious we’ve decided to go off-site on Visitors Day. With no gear and no food (a bit like Metromania) we’re going to head off into the wilds and have a survival camp. They tell me that Roxby Downs is a nice spot.
