Membership- Over the past year, many new members have joined the club. Re-enforcing our club identity as the Mid-Wisconsin Chippers, our 17 new club members come from Appleton, Brown Deer, Eldorado, Greenfield, Greenleaf, Milton, Oshkosh (9), Ripon, and Wisconsin Rapids. They are introduced to our club in a variety of ways. For example, they learn about our club from our website, club classes, the Annual Show as well as Kruegers Carving Day, various area Senior Center classes, and most importantly from personal contact. Our current club membership is 80.MWC Club Table at Stevens Point

The Chippers will have a Club Table at the September 21st & 22nd Wisconsin River Woodcarving Show in Stevens Point. The Wisconsin River Woodcarvers Club allows 6 entries for judging per club table so that translates to 1 entry each for 6 Chippers Club members. If fewer than 6 sign up, the remaining entries may be filled by others.Works to be judged must remain at the show for both days and the table must be staffed on both days. Contact Jack Kumm at [email protected] if you are interested submitting a work to be judged or in staffing the table. Preference will be given to carvers who can help staff the table on at least one day. There are club members interested in submitting more than one carving, please contact Jack soon so table arrangements can be finalized.Oshkosh Public Museum - Woodcarving Techniques & Handcarving DemonstrationMark your calendar! On Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 1-3 pm, there will be a carving demonstration by Mid-Wis. Chipper Gene Bengel. Gene will have a presentation on woodcarving of birds, fish, and caricatures at the Oshkosh Public Museum, 1331 Algoma, Blvd., Oshkosh, Wisconsin. General Admission. More info at oshkoshmuseum.org.

New Club Webmaster Needed - Marge B. stepped down as the Chippers Webmaster. Gene acknowledged Marge B. for building our club website into the envy of Wisconsin clubs. Our website is widely read and many club members access our newsletter, forms and event information through it. The club needs a computer savvy person to administer it. Content is generated by Officers and the webmaster is responsible for posting and layout. Our web host is Weebly and that has worked out well. Marge has left detailed instructions for maintaining the site. If you are interested in keeping our website up to date, please contact Tim Gosz at [email protected].

Birch Art Gallery & Classes is opening soon in Oshkosh. Club member Barb Schneider is an art teacher with over 34 years experience. She will offer classes including stain glass art. If you might be interested in displaying and selling some of your art work, please contact Barb at 920-479-6011, leave a message if she is not there. Her opening is expected soon as Oregon street construction is nearly complete. Barb also plans to offer snacks & tea. Birch Art Gallery is at 1677 Oregon Street, Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Winchester Historical Society - On June 6th Barb Behm delivered a presentation on her carvings and her father's violin making to about 37 people. Barb also discussed the Chippers Club & Show and handed out flyers for the 2020 show.

The 2020 Chippers Show Progess Report

The Live Birds of Prey presentation by Rebekah Weiss, of Aves Wildlife Alliance was very well received at our 2019 show. The presentation was packed. Many people secured seats well in advance of the program. The Show Program Committee is working to bring a new crowd drawing presentation to our 2020 show.

Our 2019 show had an excellent response from the carving community and vendors with a sell out capacity 65 tables. In fact, two carvers agreed to share a table to permit a late entry. There has been such great enthusiasm for the new venue that we expect most exhibiters will return. Therefore we urge people to secure their tables with early registration. Not only does early registration secure your table, but does so at the lower early bird price, AND early registration enables the Show Committee to better plan and execute a great show experience. A 2020 registration form is attached to this newsletter. Please do not delay, send in your table registration today.

There were several non-exhibiter carvers in attendance at the show who liked the show so much that they indicated a desire to exhibit at the 2020. With all the above in mind, we will expand our exhibiter capacity WITHOUT reducing the wonderful table space enjoyed by the 2019 exhibiters.

In 2020, the demonstrations/presentations will be moved from the main exhibition hall to the Hutchinson Room (where the carvings were judged.) Although in 2019 we doubled the number carvings judged (102) over the 2018 numbers, we were able to accommodate this increase and also add photography of the blue ribbon winners and the competition carvings were picked up expeditiously. This was all completed, and finished by mid-morning. We are confident that there will be ample time for judging, photography and presentations in the same room over the course of the show day including the necessary seating changes. We had a few growing pains with our 2019 changes, but 2020 will have the benefit of our learning experience. This greater utilization of the Hutchinson Room for both Judging and Presentations will free up additional space in the main exhibition hall that will accommodate a dozen more tables. In addition, our raffle tables may be increased from 5 to 7 to accommodate more donated raffle prizes. More exhibiter tables and more raffle prizes will translate into more revenue for our show.

For 2020, a primary goal will be increasing attendance. While we expect word of mouth from the 400 attendees will have a positive effect, we have identifIed other ways to increase our exposure to the public.

19 of 26

We had 65 paid tables at the 2019 show including 11 vendor tables and 1 woodcarving club table (not counting the Chipper's club table.

Our goal for 2020 is to have 74 paid tables (a 14% increase) including 14 vendor tables (a 27% increase) and 3 woodcarving club tables (a 200% increase). We are about 15% toward our goal with 10 paid tables including one vendor (John Henry's County Line Products) for our 2020 show. The popular basket weavers will also be returning in 2020.

Only 4 meetings before Show table prices increase on January 1st! Register now. Forms will be available at Sunday's meeting. $15 for members and you can enter 4 carvings - a bargain price!

On May 3, 2020, the 46th Annual Mid-Wisconsin Chippers Show, Competition & Sale will be held at The Oshkosh Convention Center in downtown Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Located between the Fox River and Ceape Avenue at 2 North Main Street, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, The Oshkosh Convention Center is connected to The Best Western Premier Waterfront Hotel by an elevated pedestrian bridge that crosses Main Street. The Best Western offers a rate for Show attendees of $99 per night. The Ground Round Restaurant is located on the ground level of the hotel adjacent the river. A food concession with seating will be available on the Convention concourse (just outside our exhibition area) during the event. Register now to guarantee your place in this great 2020 show.

The show theme is: "Everything you need to get started & grow in Woodcarving." This means vendors for tools, knives, chisels, gouges, thumb guards, woodburners, wood for various styles of carving and pyrography, books, clubs, interesting presentations and educational demonstrations. We will try to generate enthusiasm for wood carving and hope to get new people involved with our club and all the woodcarving opportunities that exist in mid-Wisconsin. Learn places to go carve with others. Find out about carving classes & woodcarving events.

Woodcarvers, pyrographers, a great judged competition for the best woodcarvings, carved art for sale, chainsaw carver, food concession, and the always popular bucket raffle with carvings and a host of interesting, new and handmade items. We are planning a great fun show for our audience, the carvers and vendors who make it all happen! We hope to see you in 2020!
