From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: !Today is the Feast of Pentecost, the fiftieth day of the Easter season which links the coming of the Holy Spirit to the resurrection of our Lord. !The author of Acts gives an account of the symbolic action of the Holy Spirit

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. Acts 2: 1 - 3 !

The Feast of Pentecost would gain theological and liturgical significance in the life of the early church which continues to our time. !The 4th century Egyptian Abbot Theonas states that the coming of the Spirit on the fiftieth day fulfills the Jewish feast of Weeks on which "the bread of the first fruits was ordered to be offered by the priests to the Lord.” !This notion is a reflection of words located in the writing of the Apostle Paul

We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit . . . (Romans 8:22-23) !

Professor Patrick Regan tells us that during the 5th century St. Leo the Great presented Easter and Pentecost as "two closely connected and cognate festivals.” He went on to say that Pentecost having

become a baptismal day acquired the same liturgical observances as the Pasch itself. This may help our understanding of the Feast of Pentecost as Whitsunday, as the day the newly baptised were clothed in white as a symbol of their new status in Christ. !One of the elements in the Pentecost observance is the understanding of the inseparability of the Son and the Spirit. Easter and Pentecost symbolically remind us of the unity of these two persons of the Godhead. !It is this connectedness that speaks to us of community. The persons of the Godhead function together as one. We may remember that this is Jesus’ prayer for us that we may be one. (St. John 17) !It is vital to remember two aspects of today’s observance, firstly the need for community. God almighty calls persons with a variety of gifts to function as the one body of Christ. !Secondly the Holy Spirit leads in a sensible, reasonable and logical way directing the church from age to age; helping us to use gifts of mind and intellect in order to further the work of Christ. !May the Holy Sprit fill our hearts with light at this blessed Pentecost season. !Your friend and priest, !!Noel A. HEALTH CORNER!LET'S GROW OUR OWN FOOD Does your supermarket bill keep raising your blood pressure? Always looking at the two bags in your hand and wondering if the cashier made an error? Praying that you would spend less money next month? Well here is your answer, grow your own food! Imagine if each member of our congregation planted one herb or vegetable and each week shared with the persons sitting around them. This practice would eventually make a dent in your grocery bills! Yes, you are thinking it's a great idea but who has the time or possibly the space. Start with a herb like thyme that likes full sun but not much water, it doesn't have to be watered every day. Water it during the commercial breaks of Days of Our Lives! In terms of space, use a container that is around the house, there is no need to run off and buy a fancy pot. ! Here are some creative idea for planters: That old vase or cup that you broke last Christmas but haven't thrown out yet. The old colander which belonged to your mother; it's perfect for planting, it already has holes for drainage.Your old shoe organiser that has been in the shed for ages.
