Homework: Final Independent Project, Due Last Day of Class From the exhibition displayed on the 7th floor of the Whitney’s permanent collection, choose one painter whose work you are most inspired by. Research the life and work of the artist and in your own words, write a 1-2 paragraph biography on their life along with what elements of their work influenced or inspired your final piece. In Microsoft Word (or a similar program), create a page with the Artist’s Name, Location Where They Lived and Date of Birth and Death at the top, an image of the artist’s work that inspired your final piece with the Title and Date of the piece, and finally the bio you wrote on the artist that includes their influence on your final piece. Print out the page and bring it into class. Then, using elements of the artists work that inspire you (color palette, use of value, use of composition, subject matter and/or style) create your own piece in black and white or color that is both inspired by the artist but is also uniquely your work, i.e. you don’t want to make an exact copy of their work. The medium (charcoal, graphite or pastel) is up to you. You can create 1, 18 x 24 piece, or a series of 2 or more smaller works. This assignment will be due for the Final Exhibition on the Last Day of Class. Example:

Egon Schiele, Austria, 1890-1918 Self Portrait, 1910
