Dear Parents and Guardians: The long winter is almost over and spring is
on the way. On April 13, 2012, we will be
hosting our Freshman Class of 2016 (Wow…2016) and their parents. Students
will be at WY choosing their class sched-
ules for the 2012 – 2013 school year. Each
year the number of applications received
greatly exceeds the number of slots avail-
able. For instance, we had 11,000 applica-
tions for 350 seats in the class of 2016. We
are confident that the new freshman class
will step in and continue the tradition of
academic excellence at WY. We continue to excel at academic competi-
tions and our
sports teams are
doing well at
city and state
competitions. I
think this year will go down in our illustrious history as the
"Year of State Championships." The fol-
lowing teams have won state champion-
ships so far this year: Girls Basketball, Pom
Pon Team, Debate Team, Academic De-
cathlon Team, and the Academic Center
Boys Cross-Country Team. Though proud of all of these teams, I am
especially delighted with our Debate Team
under the tutelage of Mr. Jeffrey Scheur.
Hanna Nasser and Marcel Roman defeated
Glenbrook North in the finals to bring home
the first state title in Chicago history. No-
tice that I said "Chicago history," not just
"CPS history." Mayor Emanuel even put
out a press release to express his congratu-lations to the team and called me directly! Spring break is coming! The end of the
school year activities will be in full swing
from March through June. Seniors, stay
focused. Reminder: Senior graduation is Thursday, June 8, 2012. Keep this issue of
the Newsletter handy for reference be-cause
it contains many important dates. Go Dol-
phins!!
Sincerely,
Joyce D. Kenner, Ed. D.

Exciting Summer Trips Want an experience of a lifetime? Travel!!! Mr. Katz is leading action packed adventure
trips to Baja (July 4-11) and Alaska (August 1-
8). He is looking for one more person to go on
each trip. If you are interested in sending your
child away for a
week (wink-wink)
on one of the most
positively memora-
ble experiences
they will have in
high school,
please contact
Mr. Katz at [email protected] for more
information. This is open to all students.
Boys Swimming Coach Parro and Coach Shallcross have re-
ported some highlights of their season:
The team won city Relays for the 3rd year
in a row. We placed first out of twenty-
seven schools.
1st Place City!
Mossimo Chavez, a freshman, beat the
school's record in 200 yard freestyle. He
also seated 14th in 50 yard freestyle.
We qualified for the State Championship
with the relay team of Mossimo Chavez,
Seth Williams, Dom Williams, and An-
thony Tremmel. Nice job!
Robotics Club Update #1
Ms. Jan Dudzik, club moderator, would like to thank the club's new corporate sponsor, J.C.
Penny, for their generous donation to support our Rookie FRC team. This is the very first time
that Whitney Young has had it's own FRC team. Many deserve thanks, but none deserve more
than the Robotics Booster Club and The Friends of Whitney Young. FOWY has helped the Ro-
botics Club financially over the last four years, and was crucial in sending 4 teams to the FTC
(mid level competition) where WY has earned three trophies. We also strongly competed in the
state finals this year. Visit the club's new web site and follow them during their journey at www.wyrobotics.org. The
students started building in their new alien room #020, which is located in the basement. Thank you all for investing your time, talents, and resources in these budding engineers!
State Champions!
Congratulations to the Basketball Lady Dolphins for their 63-51
victory over the Edwardsville Tigers at the Redbird Arena in
Bloomington. There were many highlights, but special recognition
must go to Linnae Harper, Player of the Game, with 14 points and
14 rebounds. Other key performers were Janee Thompson with 12
points, and Alexis Lloyd with 9 points. Thanks must also go out to Coaches Irvin, Spann, and Carter for
their hard work and dedication this season. Coach Irvin also
notched her 300th victory at the state's final game. WOW!
Science Update Dr. Muhammad has notified the Newsletter that the following students were Regional Science

Science Day Bridges
Mr. Solomon has reported that the Whitney Young Bridge Building Contest was a successful part
of this year’s Science Day. The twist with the contest this year was that a ping-pong ball had to
travel through the bridge! With their usual Whitney Young excellence, our bridge builders con-
structed over 135 bridges. The construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and
application of principles physics and also helps students develop "hands on" skills through bridge
construction. Students get a flavor of what it is to be an Engineer, designing structures to a set of specifications
and then seeing them perform their function. The bridge builders of the four most efficient
bridges were invited to compete at the Illinois Institute of Technology Bridge Contest on Mon-
day, February 6, 2012. The hard working builders are: Karol Przybyszewski (10/10.45/1045.00),
Dontell Williams (24.6/21.56/876.42), Manuel Gomez (19.3/16.5/854.92), and Kate Ushakova
(24.92/19.3/774.48). Karol went on to place 4th at City. Nice job everyone!
WY Wind Ensemble The Whitney Young Wind Ensemble recently
played at the 2012 New York International
Band Festival. They played at Carnegie Hall on
February 26, 2012. And if this honor wasn't
enough, the Ensemble performed the world
premiere of In the Year of Dreams and August
Joy by composer Vince Oliver. What an opportunity!!

students received superior ratings in recent competitions: State (IHSA): Trajan Hammonds, Nicholas Labun, Bartek
Szabla, and Audrey Rowe. City Piano: Winnie Lui and Dominick Williams Congratulations!
Math News (NSML Champs) After winning the 4th meet of the North Suburban
Math League (NSML) on February 2, the Whitney
Young Math Team went into the finals at Evanston
Township HS on Wednesday, February 29 in first
place. The team also won
the final meet, so they won
the NSML Championship.
This is the first time in the
history of the league that a
Chicago Public School has
won the championship. The team also recently
took the American Mathe-
matics Competition
(AMC). The AMC is a 25 question, 75 minute, na-
tional competition used to help determine the team
that will represent the USA at the International
Mathematics Olympiad. Top performing students on
the AMC are invited to take the American Invita-
tional Mathematics Exam (AIME). The AIME is a
15 question, 3 hour exam. This year Whitney Young
had an astounding twelve AIME qualifiers. The
qualifiers were Coby Abrahams, Mason Boeman,
Adam He, Mark Waechter, Jacob Spear, Patryk Lip-
ski, Kate Farris, Shunping Xie, John Joe Friedmann,
Charles Zhang, Emanuel Perez, and Barry Ng. Best
of luck to those students on the AIME. The team will now prepare to win their third con-
secutive city championship on April 21 at Lane Tech
High School. They are also looking forward to the
Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics State
Competition on May 5. The team was also recently honored with an all-
school pep rally. WOW!
Wake-Up Festival The GLOBAL WAKE-UP is a Festival of Film, Literature, and Creative Arts organized and

the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals. The Festival seeks to educate and en-
hance public awareness, as well as honor those who have sought to address the United Na-
tions' eight anti-poverty Millennium Development Goals, and other human condition im-
provements in developing countries. Heather Richards, Caitlin O'Hara, and Ms. Hilaris recently attended the event. Heather and
Caitlin competently worked the event registration as volunteers, and Ms. Hilaris presented
the awards to the film makers. Our school was the only high school represented. Nice job ladies!

tain Livio Bolzon. Great job!
AC Bridge Building Contest The Academic Center competed in the Whitney Young Bridge Building Contest at the Winter Family Night. The twist with the contest this year
was that a ping-pong ball had to travel through the bridge! With their usual Whitney Young excellence, our seventh grade bridge builders con-
structed over sixty bridges. The construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and application of principles physics and also helps
students develop "hands on" skills through bridge construction. By participating in the Bridge Building Competition students get a flavor of what it is to be an Engineer, designing structures to a set of specifica-
tions and then seeing them perform their function. Special thanks to Mr. Solomon, Ms. Bakker, and Dr. Bloland for their support in this project.

Whitney M. Young Departmental Showcase Spring 2012 - The Science Department
The Environment is on the Minds of Our Science Students. These past few months have been wonderful for the science department, as our students have shown excellent initiative and suc-
cess in their ventures. Our first notable mention is to our wonderful science fair contestants. This year our school hosted its annual
science fair with 120 participants presenting science fair projects and 18 photo contest entrants. We sent ten students on to
Westside Regional Science Fair, seven of whom advanced on to the City Science Fair. Congratulations to Austin Ring (’15),
Daniel Zarko (’15), Robert Issacson (’14) Sam Wischnewsky (’16), Susan Khalaf (’15), and Yiwei Jiang (’15) for their excellent
work. Additionally students of Mrs. Rehak’s and Mrs. Earlandson's Chemistry classes have completed excellent symposium projects and
essays that have garnered the eyes of city officials. Congratulations to Zhang Weipeng (’12) for his extraordinary symposium pro-
ject. Seven students are competing in the essay contest at the city level. Well done Ethan Sargent (’16), Fiona Kalensky (’15),
Nora Murphy (’15), Tristen Armento (’15), Felipe Oropeza (’15), Gabrielle Afable (’15), and Alejandro Soto (’14). All sympo-
sium, essay, and science fair contestants competing in City will present their extraordinary work at the Museum of Science and
Industry, March 22 to March 25. Building on, Karol Przybyewski (’12) placed 4th in the city’s bridge building
competition while Jasmine Grayson (’13) was nominated as distinguished
alumni from the National Youth Leadership Forum in Medicine for her con-
tinued work in the field. Our seniors have really stepped up to make positive impacts on the environ-
ment within their community. Ryan Walsh (’12) and Erica Knox (’12) and a
host of other members from the Eco Club have taken over the schools recy-
cling efforts from the custodial staff. Efforts are underway to educate staff
and students that Whitney Young recycles paper in all classrooms and plastic,
milk containers, cans and paper in the lunchrooms. Students and teachers are
reminded to please not contaminate recycling bins by throwing non-
designated items into them. If you are unsure, please do not contaminate the
recycling bins. In addition Erin Platt (’12), Erica Knox (’12) and Alexis Prewitt (’12) have
begun a new awareness program called Meatless March. The idea is to en-
courage students to be more conscious of the impacts their food choices have
on themselves and the environment. Students during lunch can visit the
awareness table every Tuesday and Thursday in March to get more informa-
tion on how to live a more thoughtful, healthy, and delicious dietary lifestyle.
While the goal is to get everyone to give up meat, the girls are very aware
that not every can or wishes to. However, if you can pledge to give up one
meat dish a week, or one meatless day please visit them and get more information! Another senior moment that showcases our students' commitments to the environment can be seen in Tika Lifton-Herman’s (’12)
senior experience independent learning project. Tika has partnered with Academy Square, a residential housing complex that is
kitty corner to the greenhouse and across the street from the arts building, and urban garden installers, WeFarm America to install
six 4’ x 12’ raised garden beds which the Garden Club is growing seedlings for their edible gardens. In the spring and throughout
the summer, Tika will lead students to work on developing and growing the gardens along with the wonderful residents who have
been very excited to work with our school. If anyone is looking for service learning hours or an op-
portunity to help with our school's gardening efforts or recycling program, please see Mr. Katz in
room 318 or email [email protected] for more information. Our seniors are not the only ones making an impact on the environment. Celina Nhan (’14), the
school’s engineers and students in Environmental Alliance sponsored by Dr. Muhammad have been
working tirelessly to improve our school’s energy consumption by reducing the amount of electric-
ity being wastefully consumed. Celina and her team have been working with teachers to reduce the
impacts of electricity vampires; appliances that though not in use but plugged in actually use more
electricity on standby then when in use. The solution, unplug or turn off the power strip of any elec-
tronics not in use at the end of the day. Celina’s team’s efforts thus far have garnered the regional
award for “Biggest Looser: Energy Loss” of all schools in the Midwest. This award was given by
ACE, the Alliance for Climate Education. On behalf of NHS and Mrs. Smith, thank you to all who purchased carnations to support all of the
WY clubs. If any club is interested in requesting money from NHS please contact Mrs. Smith. Page 5
The beginning of the new semester has been busy in the Counseling Department. We are preparing students to suc-
ceed at school and in their lives. The following are current and upcoming projects on which counselors and students
will be working.
Course programming is underway. This year students will be programming in
the following sequence: Freshmen, Juniors, then Sophomores. Please remember
to come prepared to your programming appointment:
Thoroughly read the Course Guide and completely fill out your new
4/ 6 year plan before your appointment
Identify your needs (graduation requirements) and wants (exciting
electives) to take before graduation – for instance, what class do
you need to take in order to enroll in Entrepreneurship: Small
Business Ownership?
Note new classes offered, such as Gaming Concepts.
Obtain the mandatory parent/guardian signature on your course se-
lections
Scholarships –The counselors have been working hard to make a multitude of
scholarships available as they arrive in our mailboxes. Where can you find
them?
Scholarships are posted in the Daily Dolphin, which can be accessed at www.wyoung.org – visit this
source frequently.
Scholarships are emailed weekly through Edline to students and parents
Scholarships scroll on the televisions mounted in the Houses
Scholarships are archived in the counseling department by Ms. Hogan and Ms. Flemming
Summer Opportunities continue to stream into the counseling department. Summer is a great time to delve into
your interests and develop your skills; consider taking college classes on college campuses, interning with an or-
ganization, or volunteering for the local, national, or international community. These experiences are great for your
academic, career, and identity development. The counselors are making an effort to
bring these opportunities to your awareness by compiling this information in a file
called “Summer Opportunities” on Edline.
“Summer Opportunities” is located in the “contents” section on the
Counseling Department page on Edline. Check this source frequently as
it is updated on an ongoing basis.
Seniors: complete your Financial Aid! If you have not completed your FAFSA or
CSS form, go to www.AllTuition.com
AllTuition is an easy to use, all-in-one financial aid resource. This resource is
receiving great reviews from the families that have used it.
Juniors will be introduced to Naviance during their long division over the next couple months. Juniors will learn
how to use the College-Match resource on Naviance to find colleges and universities that match to one’s GPA,
ACT/SAT score, interests, and needs. Juniors will also be introduced to the senior profile, senior resume, and ca-
reer match resources. Preparing this spring and summer will help Juniors to be confident in their post-high school
decisions as they enter their Senior year.
Just a reminder: The Counseling Department has been consolidated into a single area on the first floor in Room 120
of the Main Building. Room 120 is off of Jackson Boulevard in the southeast corner. In addition to all of the coun-
selors, there are also several computers reserved for students conducting college-related business.

Robotics Club Update #2
Recently, the University of Michigan visited Ms.
Dudzik’s Physics classes for 3 days to collaborate on the
Wind Turbine Design project as part of their unit study on
Energy. Twelve engineering students from Michigan
advised and collaborated with five Physics classes to use
the engineering cycle in a project about creating effective
wind turbines. Afterward, the engineering students spoke
to the National Society of Black Engineer's Club to offer
tips and info about Engineering Scholarships and Summer
programs. And in other club news, PIXAR collaborated with Cindy
Zhang, a member of the team in charge of the animation
submission for the Robotics competition. A Maya expert
working for PIXAR helped Cindy learn the modeling
program called Maya and assisted Cindy to create a mini
animation movie. Well done team!!

Friends Update The Friends of Whitney Young (FoWY) has been
busy with several fundraising initiatives this
year. First, the annual fundraising campaign Phone
-a-thon was held on February 26 and 27, 2012 If
you made a pledge to donate, thank you! Please
fulfill your commitment by April 30. If you haven't
yet donated, it's not too late. You can either send a
check to the Main office or you can access the WY
website www.wyoung.org and look for the "Donate
Now" button, under the Links section on the right.
Funds that are raised during the annual campaign
go back to the clubs, teams, art and academic pro-
grams that aren't funded by CPS. Please give what
you can to help enrich the high school experience
for all WY students. A second initiative was the 2nd annual Sports
Booster event held on Friday, March 23,
2012. Thank you to everyone who attended and
helped make the evening a success! If you missed it
this year, plan to attend this adult only social and
fundraising event next Spring. Also in December, FoWY teamed up with the new
parent Performing Arts Board. One of their main
goals is to improve the theatre, focusing first on
raising funds to replace the curtain. If you are inter-
ested in making a donation towards this initiative,
just look for the Donation for Theatre Curtain link,
under the Links section on the WY website. And,
we've already started planning for the Fall carnival
next year. Plan to attend the third weekend in Sep-
tember. As you can tell, there's a lot going on. We'd love to
hear from you if you are interested in getting in-
volved. Please email us at friendsofwhitneyy-
