Dear Andrew

We have consulted our early records with the following results:

We have also found two of the Whiting girls: Sylvia was a day girl from 1893-95 she would have been aged 8 on entry which is quite possible. You queried a VERY Amy. I am assuming this is a misprint and you meant VERA. We have Vera as a day girl 1894 – 95 again very young on entry but not outside the parameters especially with an elder sister attending.

I hope this helps, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need any other information. I will do my best.

Best Wishes

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for your recent enquiry about the attendance of the four Whiting sisters at Ascham during the 1890s and early 1900s.

Firstly, I can confirm that all four sisters attended the school. Secondly, thank you for your information about their dates of birth and their relationship with Linda and Eileen Teece, about which we had no record.

Page 3: WHITING MOORE, SYLVIA DOROTHY 1884-1966 REFERENCES · Mother: Amy Jane Whiting Daily Telegraph (Sydney, NSW : 1883 - 1930), Saturday 4 July 1891, page 9 On the 16th inst. It is always

Unfortunately, our records during the time of the first Principal, Miss Marie Wallis, are almost non-existent. Consequently, we have also had to rely on the digitised newspapers for any information about students who attended the school before 1902 and we also had the same information about the violin performance of E Whiting in 1894. I’m sorry that I am not able to confirm whether it was Enid or Elaine.

The only other information we hold about any of the girls is as follows:

Enid (Mrs E N Waters) –two original telegrams sent by Enid in both 1894 and 1895 to classmate Ethel Lane Latham who won the Fairfax Junior and Senior Prizes for being the top girl in the State in the final school exams. There is also a reference to her marriage in the March issue of the school magazine in 1905

Elaine (Mrs R A Phipps-Waugh) – two similar telegrams as mentioned above. Her marriage to Dr Phipps-Waugh is referenced in the September issue of the school magazine, 1905

Sylvia (Dossie) – engagement mentioned in June issue of school magazine, 1904

Vera – potentially appears in two group photographs from 1901 and approximately 1904 held in archives (would need to check); debut at Union Club Ball mentioned in school magazine, May issue, 1906.

I hope this provides you with some helpful information. If you would like copies of the photographs and telegrams, please let me know.

Kind regards,

Last Thursday afternoon Lady Fairfax opened a "Handkerchief Sale and Garden Fete" at Astolat, Avoca-street, Randwick, the residence of Mrs. W. G. Whiting, who kindly lent it for the occasion. The object of the fete was to raise funds in aid of the Creche shortly to be opened at Woolloomooloo. Lady Fairfax declared the fete open in a few appropriate words, and asked Mrs. Dane, the hon. secretary of the Creche movement, to explain the nature of the work, and the practical help the "Creche" will be to many poor bard working mothers. Mrs. Dane said more funds wore needed so as to open the Creche at once, and so allow tiny children to, be taken care of whilst the mothers were working, instead of as at present, being locked up in charge of children, perhaps only live or six years old, all day. Already one cot had been presented by a number of girls who had promised to provide the necessary funds for keeping it up; and blankets, cots, and furniture for the rooms, babies' chairs, toys, etc, would be most acceptable to the committee. Mrs. Davenport is the president, Mrs. Wilfred Fairfax, and Miss Sylvia Whiting, the vice presidents, Mrs. Dane the hon. secretary, and Miss Julio Cohen the lion, treasurer. The stalls at the fete were prettily arranged in the garden, and tea and refreshments were served on tables placed beneath shady trees and decorated with flowers. It is expected that about £60, clear of expenses, will be handed over to the fund. Amongst the visitors were Sir P. Sydney Jones and the Misses Jones, Miss Fairfax, Mrs, and Miss Whiting, Mrs. and Miss Palmer, Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. and Misa Teece, Mrs. B. Cohen, Mrs. Heron, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Thorne, Mrs. Marsden, Mrs. M'Quade, Mrs. Bowes, Mrs, G. Cohen, Mrs. Graham, and Mrs. A. Hill. For some time past the members of the Sydney Day Nursing Association, which was formed last August, have been quietly at work organising a day nursery for the babies of working mothers, and it is gratifying to know that their efforts have met with great success, and that the creche-or, as it is in future to be known-the Sydney Day Nursery-has been opened at 126 Dowling-street, Woolloomooloo. Already there are five little In-mates under the care of Nurse Breden, who belongs to the District Nursing Association. The house has been furnished by private donations, and "circles" of girls have given "cots," which they undertake to support with an inmate during the year. No child will be received in the "nursery" until satisfactory proof has been given to the committee that by taking charge of the child the mother will be enabled, and intends, to use her time in earning her living. It ls also necessary for the parent to bring a letter from, a responsible person, known to the committee, showing that her case is a genuine one. Children are received up to the ago of three years. The aim of the Day Nursing Association is to be able to care not only for the babies, but also for older children after kindergarten and school hours, to give them wholesome employment, and keep them off the street. Mrs. F. Davenport is the president of the association, Mrs. Wilfred Fairfax and Miss Sylvia Whiting the vice-presidents. Mrs. Dane is the hon. secretary, and Miss Julie Cohen the hon. treasurer. The committee includes Mrs. Whiting, Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Macdonald Gill, Mrs. H. Maitland. Mrs. Gilbert Lodge, and the Misses Cecil Stephen, L. Teece, F. E. Stephens, and Goldschmidt. The little children at present in the nursery ap-pear very happy and contented. The matron says it is curious to find that they prefer water or

A week, or two ago I told you a little about the 'Day Nursery' which has just been established in Dowling-street, Woolloomooloo. Last week I paid the 'Nursery' a visit and heard something of the working of the new establishment. Mrs. Dane, so well known in kindergarten circles, is the secretary, and she was receiving the visitors, who had been specially invited to afternoon-tea, and to see what was being done for the tiny children. Upstairs, in a sunny room, under the charge of Matron Breden, five mites were to be found. One fat, fair baby, the delight of any mother's heart, sat on the floor and watched interestedly all that was going on around him. 'Boronia' and 'Rupert,' a tiny brother and sister, also came in for a share of notice. No child will be received in the 'Day Nursery' until satisfactory proof has been given to the committee that, by taking charge of the child, the mother will be enabled and intends to use her time in earning a living. It is also necessary for the parent to bring a letter from a responsible person, showing that the case is a genuine one. and giving a reasonable guarantee that the child will be removed at the close of the day. Children arc received up to the age of three years. Mrs. Wilfred Fairfax, Mrs. W. G. Whiting, Mrs. H. Maitland, Mrs. Macdonald Gill, Mrs. Frank Davenport, and Mrs. E. Bennett, are among the interested folk. Both Miss Sylvia Whiting, and Miss Linda Teece are office bearers, Miss Teece presiding over the Woollahra 'Cot,' and Miss Whiting over the Randwick one. Although the 'Nursery' is closed at half-past 6, tiny white cots stand in the room upstairs, and in which the children may have their nap during the day-time. Several well-known medical men have also volunteered their services if required. Included among them are Dr. Blackburn, Dr. Wilfred Fairfax, Dr. Maitland, and Dr. Waugh (Miss Whiting's brother-in-law). On Fridays nine little one's generally occupy the 'Nursery,' the mothers paying the sum of threepence for each child, unless there be two in one family, when a reduction to twopence is made. The 'Nursery' is supported entirely by voluntary subscriptions or by entertainments, a fete being recently held at Randwick in aid of the good cause. It took place in the grounds of Astolat, the residence of Mrs. W. G. Whiting, and was formally declared open by Lady Fairfax.

An afternoon tea party was given at 'Jean's' rooms, in George-street, on Thursday last, the hostesses being a number of girl friends of Mr. Samuel Cook, who had assembled to wish him 'bon voyage' prior to his departure for England in the R.M.S. Marmora. On behalf of the girls Miss Angus presented the guest of the afternoon with a morocco leather case, containing the names of the hostesses. Mr. Cook responded by a short speech, in which he expressed his appreciation, both of the presentation and the thought which prompted it. At the close of the afternoon Mrs. Gordon Craig voiced the thoughts of those present by wishing him a pleasant holiday and a safe and speedy return to Sydney. Mr. Cook departed to the strains of 'For he's a jolly good fellow.' sung enthusiastically and harmoniously. The hostesses were Mrs. Gordon Craig, Mrs. S. Cook, Mrs. M. F. Ariel, Mrs. Hale, Mrs. P. Pickering, the Misses Ellfe and Blanche Curnow, Miss Smith, Miss Angus, Miss Tighe, The Misses Begg, Miss [Vera]

Dancing men were certainly in the majority at the girls' dance at Baumann's Rooms on Friday night, a fact which it is extremely pleasant to relate. Most of the balls to-day are arranged by the womenfolk, and all that the men are asked to do is to come and dance. This they appear to be doing this year with a good deal of energy. The entertainment on Friday was very well done indeed, and reflected much credit on the committee, the secretary .(Miss Currie-Elles), and the treasurer (Miss Enid Purves.) The young hostesses, all well-known society maidens, included Miss Lydia Abbott, Miss Dora Bauer, Miss Blaxland, Miss Gladys Bowker, Miss B Baxter-Bruce, Miss Cora Carey, Miss Davies, Miss Currie-Elles, Miss Alma Falk, Miss B Friend, Miss N. Griffiths, Miss Nona Hay, Miss B Ivey, Miss Violet Jackson, Miss May King. The welcome rain which ushered in the new year, cleared off completely at about noon, and the day onward was fine and enjoyable. Consequently a fair number of society folk went out to Randwick for the last day's racing in connection 'with the - Summer meeting. After, the showers the lawns in front of the members' stand were fresh and green, while the garden beds were ablaze with phlox and other bright flowers. There was nothing specially startling in the way of toilettes, and as a rule rather sombre gowns were worn on account of the uncertain = appearance of the skies. ………….. CLAIM UNDER MORTGAGE.

King v. Whiting and another.

The plaintiff, Robert Joshua King, sued Dr. Keith Moore Whiting, claiming £5895/14/9, alleged to be due as principal and interest accruing under two Indentures of mortgage. The plaintiff alleged that he advanced £400 to the defendant, who was a beneficiary with others in what was known as the Moore Estate, and £6000, the loans being secured on mortgage. The defendant, in his pleas, said that he did not give a mortgage for £400, but for £300, and that the indenture was fraudulently altered by a solicitor who was acting in the matter. He further

alleged that he had repaid the £300, and denied that he had given a further mortgage for £6000. In a second action, the plaintiff sued Wilfred Leslie Moore, and Sylvia Dorothy Moore, his wife, to recover other sums of money alleged to have been advanced on mortgage. Defendants replied that they had repaid the sums claimed to the duly authorised agents of the plaintiff. Mr. Halse Rogers (instructed by Messrs. Stephen, Jaques, and Stephen) appeared for the plaintiff; and Mr. Boyce and Mr. J. A. Ferguson (instructed by Mr. H. J. Asplnall) for the defendants in both cases.

The cases are part heard.
