WHITESIDE COUNTY SEPT/OCT ISSUE

Adventures Await! Celebrate National

4-H Week October 4-10 Join 7 million 4-H members around the world in

celebrating National 4-H Week on October 4 through

October 10. Illinois is using the theme “Adventures Await”

because that’s just what happens when you join

4-H… ADVENTURE! New date for the New Year

The new 4-H year for Illinois 4-H will now begin

October 1. To us, it just made sense to make the

change! In the past, we feel many families are barely

finished with one 4-H year before we’re asking you to

move into the next year. Some members are still

exhibiting at county or state fair while other members

are finishing award applications. Counties are rushed to

recognize the accomplishments of the prior year while

they’re out recruiting new volunteers for the next year;

and, we are all rushed with back-to-school

excitement. It just seems September is crazy. We felt it

just made sense to take a deep breath and give families

time to enjoy the past year’s successes before

launching into the next.

So, we are extending the 2014-15 year one more month

through September and beginning the NEW YEAR

on October 1, 2015. The new year kickoff will now

coincide with National 4-H Week which runs Oct. 4-

10.

The Illinois State 4-H Office is also working on

improvements to the current enrollment process which

are intended to make 4-H memberships easier to access

and track for families, volunteers and staff. Stay tuned

for more details as they are available!

THANK YOU

Huge thank you to all the 4-H members, families, leaders, volunteers, staff, fair board, and

community businesses for making the 2015 Whiteside County 4– H Show a huge success. We

could never do it without all of your generosity. We appreciate you all so much and hope you

continue to help make 4-H the best it can be.

National 4-H Week for Whiteside County

Before we know it, National 4-H Week will be upon us! This year National 4-H Week will be October 4th-10th, 2015.

This is a great time to celebrate 4-H and spread the good word. 4-H promotion is very important during this time of year

and will help us start our 4-H club year by recruiting new 4-H’ers. This is a great time for you, individually or with your

club, to be involved in one or more promotional projects.

Some ideas you may choose from are:

**Write an editorial to local papers on “What 4-H Has Done For Me."

**Do radio public service announcements, taped or live spots.

**Make a special effort to invite another person to join 4-H, either as a member or volunteer.

**Wear a 4-H shirt to school one day.

**Have a meeting exchange with another club in the county to get to know each other.

**Do something for your community.

**Make posters and fliers about your club.

4-H COOKIE BOXES

During National 4-H Week there will be a Cookie Box Decorating Contest again this year. We encourage ALL ages of

4-hers to participate.

The rules are as follows:

*1. You may do one box per 4-H member

*2. Only boxes available from the Extension Office may be used for the contest. These will

be available at leaders mtg!

*3. Each box is to be decorated with a 4-H theme. The boxes will be judged on creativity

and uniqueness while getting across a positive message about 4-H. Any media may be used.

The cookie boxes (and cookies) will be given to local dignitaries during the month of October.

*4. Decorated boxes are due to the Extension Office by Friday October 2nd, 2015!

Window Displays

Window displays help with the promotion of 4-H in the county. Displays have to be in place Monday, October 5 and

will be judged that week. Be thinking of ideas and places to put your displays.

Window displays should be based on the State 4-H theme: “Adventures Await” Be creative. This year each club can

put up to two window displays around their area. The more displays the better.

1st place :$100 2nd place: $75 3rd place: $50 you really cant go wrong with this fun club project.

Reminder: 4-H Club Annual Financial Statement due soon Summertime activities and fair seasons are almost here. Are your 4-H club’s secretary and

treasurer’s record books up-to-date? All 4-H clubs with a checking or savings account must

complete both pages of the 4-H Club Annual Financial Statement form at the end of each

4-H year. Submit this statement along with other required forms and officer books to your

county Extension office by September 1st The financial statement includes a report of

income and expenses for the 4-H club checking account (page 1) and/or savings account (page 2). The club treasurer

and club leader must sign on page 2 of this form to verify that the information is correct. Also on page 2, the Fiscal Re-

view Committee (a group of 2 or 3 youth and adults who do not have signatory rights on the club’s bank account(s))

must review the financial records of the 4-H club for the past year and sign to indicate that they have found everything in

good order. Contact the county Extension office if you need a copy of this financial statement. This is a required step

from IRS. Your club can not be re-enrolled for the new 4-H year until this is received in the Extension office.

Want to be a Federation Member?

Now is your chance. This group is for all 4-Hers 12 and older. We usually meet once a month to have meetings, do

community service, go on fun trips and more. This is a great way to get to know the other kids your age from other 4-H

clubs and build great friendships. Our first meeting will be held September 20th at 2:00pm ( Location TBD) we will

send out postcards reminders.

Ever wonder what an Ambassador is or does?

Ambassadors, like federation, meet once a month but have slightly different tasks. Ambassadors are the teens who help

spread the word about 4-H. They market and support 4-H in many different areas. If we are invited to have a booth at a

local event, Ambassadors are in charge of it. They help with promotion during national 4-H Week and much more. Our

first meeting will be September 20th at 3:00pm (Location TBD) we will send out postcard reminders. This year we will

not be making it a requirement to fill out an application. So if you feel you are willing to put the work in when needed,

we would love to have you!

Going to the Farm Progress Show? Vote for 4-H

Illinois’ two Farm Credit associations are celebrating the 100th year of the Farm Credit System with a $100,000

commemorative contribution to the Illinois agriculture industry. 1st Farm Credit Services and Farm Credit Illinois

will collectively distribute the special centennial contribution between ten different Illinois agriculture groups. Farm

Progress Show attendees can help “Designate the Dollars” by voting for one of the ten organizations in an electronic

survey during the show on Sept. 1-3. The $100,000 investment will be dispersed to the following recipient organizations

based on the percentage of votes each group receives:

Illinois 4-H

Illinois Ag-In-The Classroom

Illinois AgrAbility

Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program

Illinois Agri-Women

Illinois FFA

Illinois State University Department of Agriculture

Southern Illinois University College of Agricultural Sciences

University of Illinois College of ACES

Western Illinois University School of Agriculture

We partner with many of these great organizations, and know that, together, we are making a difference for Illinois

families. Angie Barnard, executive director of the Illinois 4-H Foundation, will accept our check in a ceremony held

Thursday, Sept. 3.

4-H membership age remains the same

You may have heard talk about upcoming changes to the Illinois State Fair competitive events for youth. Some families

have asked if those changes will impact our 4-H membership age. Illinois 4-H membership eligibility will remain 8 to 18

years of age on Sept. 1, 2015. Cloverbud membership is open to youth who are 5 to 7 years of age by Sept. 1, 2015.

What does water mean to you?

The Illinois Water Resources Center is sponsoring a “Water Is” photo contest. Youth are invited to submit photos which capture what water

means to them, their communities and the state. Winning images will be featured in IWRC’s publications which promote the new Illinois

Shooting Sports volunteer training on target for Sept. 11-13 We are in major need of willing volunteers to be trained in the 4-H Program shooting sports. The

main office is willing to pay the training fee. So if you or anyone you know is wanting to be a part of

this, contact the office.

Adults interested in teaching the shooting sports hobby to young people should attend the fall adult volunteer

certification training for the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program Sept. 11-13 at 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age. Cost is $120.

Volunteers must register through their local U of I Extension office by Sept. 3. Check in begins at 6 p.m. on

Friday, Sept. 11. The training ends at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. Volunteers must be present for all hours of the training

to receive their certification.

There are five concentrations of study, and volunteers must choose only one discipline to attend per session.

These include archery, rifle, shotgun, and hunting and wildlife, as well as the overall county coordinator training.

Remember, volunteers will work with their local Extension 4-H staff to establish or add to an existing shooting sports

program in the county. Learn more about the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program at:

web.extension.illinois.edu/shootingsports

What did YOU do this past 4-H year? Think about it – what did you accomplish that you’re really proud of? Maybe it was stepping outside your shell

and doing a presentation. Or did you learn to edit video? Pull your club together to do a community-wide recycling

program, teach a workshop to younger members, or get selected to a county or state committee that brought a lot of

opportunities your way? Whatever it was, congratulations!! You’ve worked hard…and possibly played hard also…this

past year and now it’s time to brag on yourself a bit!

4-H offers several ways that members can get recognized, on the club, county, and state level. If you’re

interested in applying for some of the county and state awards, check with your 4-H club leader and/or local Extension

office to see what you need to do. Check out the Illinois 4-H website for information: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/

state4h/members/recognition.cfm. For some awards, there are special award applications that need to be filled out. Now

is the time to be thinking about what’s needed for those forms and start to work on them. Find out what your local

deadlines are – some forms may need to be signed by your 4-H club leader; others may be able to go directly to the local

county office. Most counties will have some type of 4-H award selection process and you want to make sure that your

paperwork is turned in before the deadline!

For those members who will be 15-18 years of age by September 1, 2015, you may be eligible to apply for our

Illinois state 4-H award selection process. Check with your county office about what you may need to do for those

awards. We’ll give you a little heads up – CHANGE is in the air!! While your county 4-H award selection process may

be the same this fall as it’s been in the past, the STATE selection application (and possibly the process too) will be

changing for the January 2016 deadline. Local Extension staff will find out the exciting details at a training meeting in

early September and can share those specifics with you this fall so you can join one of our first transitions to a NEW 4-H

Recognition program!

Brag on yourself! Ask for help if you need it. We know you’ve learned and accomplished a lot. No matter what

age you are, if you are 4-H member, you can be recognized for what you’ve done; you just have to be willing to tell us

about it!

What fun we had at the Illinois State Fair! More than 2,451 4-H members from 2,200 families exhibited at the

State Fair 4-H General Project Show this year (another 235 were registered

but were unable to attend). We know the late dates of the fair kept some

members home, but we were UP MORE THAN 80 exhibits over last year!

Here are the totals registrations from each day of our show: Friday (584), Sat-

urday (807), Sunday (695), and Monday (600). About 30% of the exhibits

received superior ratings.

If you’d like to offer feedback on your experience at this year’s state fair,

email your comments to [email protected].

Just a reminder that any premiums which are distributed from com-

petitions at the Illinois State Fair come directly from the Department of Ag.

With budget uncertainties, we do not know if or when that money might be

released. Families are reminded of this general disclaimer we publish each

year about the uncertainties of premium payment. The state office will notify

county Extension office with any new information when it becomes availa-

ble.

"The Department of Agriculture shall use its best efforts to secure suffi-

cient appropriations to fund premiums. In any year for which the Gen-

eral Assembly of the State of Illinois fails to make an appropriation

sufficient to pay such premiums, premium amounts may not be accu-

rately reflected in this Premium Book."
