Anew venture is under way betweenInternational® Truck and EngineCorporation and MAN Nutfahrzeuge.

The partnership, unveiled at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville,Kentucky, in April 2005, blends more than180 years of diesel-engine experience, dat-ing back to 1893 when Rudolph Dieseldeveloped the first diesel engine at MAN.

At the show, Jack Allen, President ofInternational Engine Group, unveiled thebig-bore engine that “builds upon ourstrong heritage as a leader in diesel-engineperformance and provides our customersand dealers more big-bore engine choices.”

Give Me Options

The engine launch is part of a strategicagreement between International andGerman firm MAN Nutfahrzeuge to collabo-rate on design, development, sourcing, andmanufacturing of components and systemsfor commercial trucks and diesel engines.“At the show, the customer feedback wasgreat,” says Chris Kovac, Key MarketManager for International.

According to Kovac, packaging a vendor-supplied engine with International’s national support network means greaterservice for customers. “We have nearly1,000 dealerships nationwide and alreadyprovide the most support for our chassis,”he says. “We will be able to do that for ourengine as well. By far, we have the largestsupport network in North America. This just

gives the consumermore options.”

The fully emissions-compliant engine inthe 11- to 13-literrange is a full step upin size and power fromInternational’s leadingmidrange diesels.According to Allen,“The engine is specifi-cally engineered tointegrate leading dieseltechnologies with cab,chassis, and systems

innovations, all backed by the industry’slargest dealer, service, and parts network.”The big-bore powertrain meets the demandsof Class 8 customers for fuel economy, relia-bility, uptime, durability, performance, anddriver experience.

Providing Integrated Solutions

Key components of the engine include

• A performance-driven, direct-injection,high-pressure, common-rail, electronicfuel system capable of multiple injection events;

• A durable, single overhead cam actuat-ed with four valves/cylinders and rollerrocker arms to minimize friction andenhance fuel economy;

• A compacted-graphite iron cylinderblock for high strength and low weight;

• Rugged, gear-driven air compressorand power-steering pump; and

• Rear gear train and pad-mountedaccessories designed for low noise.

The engine also has an expanded emissionstechnology platform dubbed Green DieselTechnology® that was in development forfive years. Extensive research, development,and real-world testing have resulted inimproved diesel-emission solutions. “GreenDiesel Technology allows for optimized dri-vability, life-cycle value, minimized emissions,and a new level of driver comfort with verylow noise and vibration,” explains Allen.

Green Diesel Technology’s flexibility givesInternational the edge in designing applica-tion-specific solutions using advanced airmanagement, selected fuel-system applica-tion, proprietary combustion strategies, electronic controls, and optimized after-treatment solutions.

“The unique integrated capability Inter-national has is an advantage that allowsInternational’s engineers to design for opti-mal packaging, diesel performance, relia-bility, durability, maintenance costs, and fuel optimization in the face of 2007 emis-sions requirements,” Allen notes. He assures customers that in 2007, the Green DieselTechnology emissions platform will allowthe big-bore engine to display “pure powerand power that is pure.”

Scheduled to debut in International Class 8vehicles in fall 2007, the new engines willonly be offered in International-brand severeservice trucks, regional haul tractors, andlong-haul tractors. The firm will also contin-ue to offer Cummins and Caterpillar big-boreengines in International Class 8 vehicles.Kovac says, “I’m excited about the prospectof providing customers with integrated trucksolutions for their equipment needs.”

When investing in any product, a warranty can often calmanxiety and apprehension. No one knows this better thanMichael Bullock, Warranty Administrator for White’s

Tractor & Truck. Although Bullock is based in White’s Wilson facility,he and Administrative Assistant Randy Saulter handle warranties forall White’s locations.

It’s a considerable job with many cases, but each situation receivesthe same careful consideration and thought. White’s goals are tokeep customers happy and earn their future business.

“I clarify what is covered and what is not — explaining those ‘grayareas’ — and work hand-in-hand with service managers,” explainsBullock. The thousands of annual claims from each location trafficinto his office, but Saulter supports him.

“I handle claims for the Greensboro and Highpoint locations and file them through System21,” says Saulter. Bullock focuses on claim documentation for the Goldsboro, Mt. Airy, and Wilsonlocations. They share no locations, but the two collaborate when necessary.

A Positive Partnership

Bullock, a White’s professional of eight years, remembers when lifewasn’t always so hectic. But with White’s moving full steam ahead,“our work has tripled,” he reports. “Business is good, and that’sgood for us.”

Bullock is especially cognizant that White’s association with Interna-tional® Truck and Engine Corporation is a partnership of tremendousbenefit to both companies. He came to White’s when Internationalwas offered only out of the Goldsboro and Wilson locations.

“All of us realize that International manufactures an excellent product, and they’re willing to stand behind it, so that createstrust,” says Bullock. “Of course, customers are expected to hold up their part of the deal in terms of ‘wear and tear.’ Improper operation is not covered.”

Peace of Mind

If a White’s customer requires assistance with a warrantable failure,such as an engine overhaul, Bullock will invite that customer to

participate in obtaining additional protection after the rebuild.“They can buy optional coverage to extend repairs just completed,”he says. That added peace of mind comes with knowing all bases arecovered, which appeals to many of White’s patrons.

Bullock admits warranties aren’t a major source of White’s revenue.“But it’s important for customers to feel confident about protectionwhen they buy the product,” he says. “Our manufacturers trust the parts and vehicles they sell, and we, as the dealer, convey thatmessage through our actions.”

When a truck arrives at a White’sTractor & Truck Body Shop for analignment or a fresh coat of paint,

the experienced and efficient staff seesmore than an old vehicle. Each repair repre-sents a new challenge. And these challengesare met with the highest quality materialsand modern equipment.

White’s operates Class A body shops in bothWilson and Greensboro, offering completebody repair on trucks, trailers, and motorhomes. Larry Davis, Manager of the bodyshops, oversees the eight “body men” in theWilson shop — who have 42 years of com-bined experience in the industry — as wellas four employees in Greensboro.

According to Davis, customer service is a pri-ority in all situations. “The staff performsquality work with satisfaction guaranteedand no questions asked,” he says. “We canrestore vehicles from start to finish.”

Davis notes the Wilson shop’s state-of-the-artequipment includes welders, a 62-foot-longDuz Mor collision-repair system, a 70-foot-long paint booth that can split into two 35-foot bays, and a Blackhawk frame machinefor front and rear wheel alignments. Amongthe equipment in the Greensboro shop is a35-foot-long frame machine.

Environmentally and Customer FriendlyThe computerized paint booth is a source of pride for Davis and his crew. The paint-

mixing system can mix paint on site tomatch any hue or design specification. “Weuse DuPont paint because it is the highestquality,” says Davis. The paint is then“baked” on for durability.

All materials used at the shop meet thestrictest Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) and Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration (OSHA) standards. The paint thinner retains its strength throughthree uses before it is recycled. And becauseof the booth’s downdraft system, “We lose very little overspray,” says Davis. “It is environmentally friendly.”

White’s Body Shop also offers 24-hourwrecker service and free estimates, so noone loses sleep over a damaged truck. “Wedo it all, and you can arrange convenientappointments with a phone call,” says Davis.

Working Toward SatisfactionDavis’s knowledge of the body shops andthe many methods of repairing and restor-ing vehicles is a reflection of his long historywith the company. “I have worked at thesame company for 28 years,” he says. “Thiswas my first job — I started out doing bodywork.” Five years ago, he was asked to runthe body shops.

Over the years, Davis has witnessed somefancy custom work. The White’s Body Shopteam has painted intricate fade-outs andworked on some creative customizing. “Weworked on a 1949 model GMC, and now itlooks brand new,” he says. “We brought itback to life.” The shop also restored a 1956model wrecker and a 1958 Emeryville. “Wedo all makes and models — International®

trucks, Freightliners, KWs, Peterbilts, Volvos,and Macs,” he says.

The shop in Greensboro is relatively youngat four and a half years old, compared tothe Wilson shop that Owner Steve Whiteopened approximately three decades ago.But the hallmark of both operations is thesame — quality and satisfied customers.“These shops are a success,” Davis says.“And that’s what it’s all about.”

On the Road, AgainBody Shops Return Vehicles to the Road, Good as New

“The staff performs quality workwith satisfaction guaranteed and
