At the time the sun is in its northern declination (March 21 to September 21), on the eighth day of the waxing or on the tenth day of the waning moon, etc., when the constellations are in an excellent formation, begin just before dawn. In an auspicious place draw a pleasing and beautiful square mandala in whose center is an eight petalled lotus surrounded by five circles. Upon that, upon a tripod is a precious vase possessing favorable characteristics, tied at the neck with white silk. Fill this water from a permanent lake or continuously flowing glacial spring drawn by a pure young girl and with the twenty five substances. Decorate with a fruit tree branch. Within the leaves place a drawing of the Samaya form of Tara or else arrange a statue on the altar. In front of this is the torma, to the right are long life pills, to the left is the amrita, and lastly the torma is tastefully surrounded by diverse offerings. If one is not able to do this, then on top of a shelf with a white covering place one pile of white grains. On the middle of the pile collect and arrange a vase, a torma, a suitable form body and the first to the last of the offerings. Generally accomplish the continuous practice of self-generation as well as the essential nature of motionless meditative concentration. The preparation is completed in this way: Offer the torma(s) to the local deities and negative spirits; meditate upon the profound wheel of protection; wash with fragrant water; sit on a comfortable cushion; and place the mind in devotion and happiness.

To confess mistakes, recite the one hundred syllable mantra and then dissolve into the completion stage, the mandala of clear light, to purify Samsara and Nirvana. Recite the prayers to dedicate the merit and increase good fortune. Furthermore, to schedule one’s recitation of the Victorious Mother, The length of time: from seven days to twenty one days, months, years, etc., or whatever is suitable. It is said, “Through the effort of even seven days, the untimely certainty of death is averted.” Numbers: the recitation of ten thousand, one hundred thousand, ten million, etc., removes one’s share of the succession of untimely death, misfortune and discord, protects the remaining duration of one’s life and obtains the Pure Awareness of Immortality. It is said, “By the unmoving, one-pointed recitation of one hundred thousand, Pure Awareness of Life is obtained. The signs of recitation: it is said, “To see the actual countenance of the deity and to receive prophecies is the primary sign. To have the vision of or at least to dream of seeing the countenance of the deity and receiving prophecies, seeing a mass of white light, gathering flowers, eating fruit, drinking amrita, seeing the rising of the sun, seeing a beautiful white maiden, seeing stupas, seeing tsa tsas, and being given jewelry, malas and so forth, or any white substance, are the mediocre signs. Seeing these, one certainly possesses the signs of the accomplishment of life.” Thus, you have the times, numbers and signs of Tara’s recitation. At the time of undertaking the accomplishment, do whatever is possible. In front is the mandala with the accomplishment substances. From Tara’s three bright places, three light rays of white, red and blue emanate, dissolving into one’s own three places. Think that one obtains the accomplishment of primordial wisdom and eternal life.

This is advice offered by the Immortal Lake-Born Teacher (Padmasambhava), the Wish-Fulfilling King of Power, which is the center of the precious mass of many different methods of Tara, the live-giving, wish-fulfilling moon. Endeavor now to pull this chariot of merit of Tara’s smiling rays of blessings which finally expels the dark battle of the Lord of Death. May all beings possess the body of the increasing water treasure of long life!
